Anyone else purchase the clear blu-ray 2-disc cases and make their own combo packs?
I've got a ton of DVD's that I don't really wanna get rid of for a nickel at my local trade-in shops. So I just slapped the DVD into these releases... The small things entertain me! ![]() |

"Ba ba ba Bird Bird Bird, Birdman's the word."
Looks like Birdman of Alcatraz is coming to my house a bit earlier than anticipated. I'm not taking a chance on that thing selling out; huge Burt Lancaster fan, and I needs to have it. I wants it. The precious!! Thankfully, I bought Inherit The Wind during their last sale, so no worry there. Quote:

Man, Chato's Land is woefully underrated. It's no classic but this is a lean, mean western/revenge film with an excellent cast headlined by the inimitable talents of Charles Bronson (at 51 looking more physically imposing than guys half his age) and Jack Palance.
Have always loved this terse, brutal, and grim Vietnam parable that manages to say a lot about racism and pioneering at the same time. The cinematography of the "badlands" (as described by Palance's conflicted creation, and photographed in Almeria, Spain) is simultaneously bleak and beautiful, comprised of "rock, scrub, and more rock" yet open and expansive. As intended by screenwriter Gerard Wilson, the landscape very much a character itself. Speaking of Wilson, his interview that TT was so gracious to include is wonderful, lending insight into his thought processes when composing the script and to the casting process (which he was more than instrumental in.) I found it fascinating that Robert Ryan, an actor I adore, was his first choice to play the savage Jubal Hooker (fearlessly essayed by Simon Oakland.) As good as Palance is here I think Ryan would have made an exquisite Whitmore, the one-time leader of the posse reliving war glories in his pursuit of Chato. *Spoilers ahead* If I have one major gripe with the movie, it's that we as cineastes are never given the opportunity to see Bronson and Palance, two of the toughest and meanest hombres to grace the silver screen, square off. How is it possible to unite these two guys in the same movie and give them no time together? Probably my favorite western of the 70s. Anyhow, thankfully my patience paid off and I was able to replace my ugly MGM DVD at half off MSRP less than a year from street date. Thanks TT. Last edited by SeanJoyce; 03-17-2017 at 02:41 AM. |

Well I may never get my second order from the sale. It shipped on the 7th, and has somehow gone from Virginia, bypassed me in Mississippi, and gone to Oklahoma, now to Texas. It was originally supposed to be here yesterday, but I am hoping for a Saturday delivery date now if I am lucky. Not SAE's fault, and usually I have good luck with USPS. I guess I will just have to wait it out.

Guys and gals, if you've never seen Lilies of the Field, get it before it sells out at TT. Such a sweet film, and it is impossible to come away from Lilies and not be a Poitier fan.
When I was going through the list of films for sale, I couldn't believe it was listed at $10. And I got Birdman of Alcatraz today in the mail. I can't believe how fast Twilight Time gets my orders to me. Thank you! |

Late buy; added Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Tracy. Poitier. Hepburn in her Best Actress-winning performance.
Now I'm trying not to buy The Train. I'm intrigued. Big Burt Lancaster fan, and Paul Scofield is sooooo soooo good. Oh, F it. I'm buying The Train, too. ![]() |

Can't go wrong with "The Train". This is a real gem~ well written, excellent performances, particularly by Lancaster, and a wonderful central motif~ the liberation of the essence of western culture and civilization, it's most priceless art, from the demons within. Have seen some muttering here about supposed plot holes...some people are really desperate to disparage and nit-pick. And to top it off TT's offering is exceptional for a half-century old release in terms of technical quality and captures the full beauty of black and white cinematography.
The film also highlights in dramatic fashion the overwhelming superiority of well-done physical special effects as opposed to the suspension-of-belief-crushing crud offered by the CGI industry. |
