A question about the upcoming Inferno release (and I guess about 3D blu-ray in general)... I personally have no interest in 3D, but I am interested in this release for the film and features. Will this disc still be playable and viewable if you don't have a 3D TV? The only 3D release I own is Warner's Dial M for Murder, but that included a 2D version on the disc.

I understood that the Blu-ray spec requires that 3D Blu-rays include a 2D version, either on the same disc or a separate one. I have not seen any exceptions to that to date.

There was a separate 2D release of that one, so a 2D copy was still available.

All 3D releases automatically default to 2D compatibility for regular players.

There were also some Disney titles that were 3D only, I think it was the Toy Story trilogy box set

Just a warning though. That Australian release has been reported to have some transfer issues. The Twilight Time transfer is pretty solid so if you don't mind picking that version up from a third party seller on amazon for a little extra money it's worth it IMHO.

There were some video issues, but a disc replacement program (even for US) exists if you get an old disc

The macroblocking and compression artifacts were corrected? If that's so that is a sweet deal

A new encode sans DNR made this disc a lot more appealing.

They tend to look like ass though, as the 2D presentation is just one "eye" of the 3D presented flatly. Usually this means the 2D presentation includes the brighter, boosted image the 3D uses to counter the glasses darkening everything. Dredd for example looks terrible on US blu because it only got a 3D disc. If I ever watch the Conan remake I would guess it looks the same.

The Umbrella release (Australian) looked pretty horrible out of the gate but someone posted that Umbrella were doing replacement discs with better compression. Those interested can surely read more in the appropriate thread in the Aussie section. Assuming you get the replacement disc it's likely at least on par with the Twilight Time.

If it were me, right now, I'd wait to see if Indicator released it in the UK though. They're a label throwing out all the stops so far.

Edit: Thought better of what I posted. Let's just say I called that disc out early on and glad others came around about it.

This is exactly my concern, and why I posed my question in the first place. If the TT release of Inferno won't include a separate 2D transfer, will the 3D transfer look flat with off-looking colors on a 2D display?
