I joined the site to read more about Criterion releases. Because of that, I discovered TT. Had I not, I may well have missed out on a number of titles that are now OOP.

Always a little sad when the "politics" of TT rears its head. I know there may be real issues, but I'm just here for the fun. At the risk of sounding like an old hippy, I prefer it when we all just get along.

I saw the alert on Facebook, and for under $15 delivered, I absolutely jumped at the chance to own it. I've never seen the film before, but....it's Francois Truffaut. That's all I needed to know.

Thank you, once again, SAE & TT.

I just posted the following link in the Criterion thread, but there's enough classic film lovers over here too, so I hope people don't mind that I'm double posting.

I attended this festival the last 2 years. HIGHLY recommended for classic film lovers (although maybe a bit pricey). The article is close to spot on, in my mind ... in a comical way too.

I don´t get it. "The Stone Killer" has a different kind of cover art than before.
Twilight posted a week ago a different kind of cover art.

Thanks, I´ve just read it on their facebook site

I think I like the booklet cover more than the front cover they use for the release.

Is Who'll Stop the Rain as good as the date and summary make it sound? Seems right up my alley.

Yes. It's one of Nolte's best roles, and also features good performances from Michael Moriarty and Tuesday Weld.

Whoops. I saw young Reese Witherspoon and was expecting to see Jim Carrey playing Andy Kauffman. I'm not the only one, right? Right???

Bear in mind it's nihilist to the nth degree, which was probably one of the reasons it flopped. It's really hard to root for Nolte's character at times, or pretty much anyone in the film because the situation turns everybody in the film poisonous: it's pretty much a question of just how much venom each character has.

I felt that Nolte's character was basically a decent guy stuck between unpleasant choices, but yeah, it's not a feel-good movie.

I never got that impression. He uses the disillusionment of the war as an excuse for a drug deal and takes out his own self-disgust
[Show spoiler]on a prospective buyer
. He starts out corrupt but in denial and ends up pretty much devoid of that pretence.

Ok, that's not what I recall, but it has been at least 20 years since I've last seen it, and about 30 years since I read the book. I look forward to revisiting it soon.

I got the strong impression that Nolte's character definitely lives by his own code of ethics- That was pretty much the gist of the scene when Moriarty's character broaches the deal to him and questions him on his reading choices.

It's also subtext to the Nolte's actions at the end (the march). Trying to eek out some honor. It's definitely downbeat, but if it were totally nihilistic, his activity (or rather inactivity) at the end would have been different I'm sure.

Trying to avoid spoilers.

Ultimately for me the aspect of the film that makes it...beloved, is that's it's a 'lovers on the run' film. That's the element that grabbed me when I saw it as a kid, and it's that romantic fatalism that keeps me coming back.

In fact, I don't know why more people aren't just flat out calling it a neo noir. It has all the classic elements.

Well, for me it's about ten years, so we'll both see what we take away from it when we see the disc.
