Damn, that $20 USD shipping fee for 4 titles kinda killed the deal a bit.

Got Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, How to Steal a Million, Pretty Poison, and Where the Sidewalk Ends for $98 USD ($133 CAD) with shipping.

So that's about $33 CAD for each title, which some may laugh at, but it's still a deal for us Canadians with this brizutal exchange rate.

There's nowhere else at the moment to get this transfer of Where the Sidewalk Ends, right?

Just ordered:
TONY ROME / LADY IN CEMENT
TWO FOR THE ROAD
GARDEN OF EVIL
Thanks TT (and SAE).

I may go back for at least INFERNO before the end of the month. Day 1 purchases are out of the question anymore though with all these sales. Something would have to be pretty special for me to jump.

I didn't know screen archives was also doing the sale since I got the email from Twilight Time and made a quick order through them. Screen Archives only charges $10 to ship 4 titles to Canada. Twilight Time charged me $20.

So just a heads up to Canadians.

I was just going to order one title direct from TT because I had a $2 off coupon. Shipping was over $11 USD for the one title which is just insane!

I ended up splurging ... I am so behind on TT Titles.. and I really really wants INFERNO 3D

so I ordered direct from TT

Inferno 3d/2D
Boston Strangler
Pretty Poison
Two for the Road
Kiss of Death
Peyton Place
Panic in Needle Park

I'd also strongly recommend How to Steal a Million I think it looks incredible... and also Violent Saturday great color noir film with an equally informative commentary track.

Wow, sounds awfully similar to my take back in January:

This movie was terrible; great premise that failed miserably on its execution. This could have been one of the great seductive noir films, in the same conversation as Body Heat and Bound, yet it doesn't even go halfway in its exploration of the sexual dynamics between Winger and Russell.

I'd be curious to see actual statistics for virtually any of these films that the market for the UK is actually larger than the US. Considering the UK is only 20% of the population of the US and a basic look at a few box office numbers seems to suggest those figures are also pretty evenly correlated. Therefore a film having a bigger market in the UK would be a pretty tough pill to swallow for most of these non-UK based films.

Do you have a source? Or is this conjecture? Just curious.

Included Charlotte in my order, now I don't feel so guilty about not waiting any longer. Based on all the reviews I've read it seems like this will remain the definitive release of the film.

It looks like Fate is the Hunter has a lot of fans, I wonder if I should jump on it before it goes...

Well hell, I hadn't planned on getting anything this time around as I've already spent too much on recent sales but that LQA prompted me to pull the trigger on Charlotte and I picked up Pretty Poison along with it.

Hmm, I just realized that LQA is for the TT website, NOT SAE. So who knows what the overall numbers are. Oh well, I guess if numbers are low at TT, then SAE must be getting low too.

I've worked for the international home video division of one of the majors, and there are plenty of fluctuations internationally - some pretty obvious (Reservoir Dogs did more than twice as much as the US gross in the UK, Trainspotting 2 made ten times more in the UK than in the US, Alan Partridge made $9.5m vs $153,000 in the US, Legend - the Krays one - did $28m in the UK where anything about The Krays takes a fortune vs $1.8m in the US). Films and TV shows like The Sweeney, Absolutely Fabulous, Dad's Army, the Carry On films or Dredd that struggle to get much of a release Stateside command high prices from UK distributors (the UK rights for Dredd went for $7m because expectations were so high there: the producers had to underwrite Lionsgate's marketing costs to even get a theatrical release in the US). Much of the StudioCanal library of English language films is virtually worthless in the USA but still has value (albeit diminishing) in the UK.

Of course, that's primarily UK-centric product (though much of it funded by US and Canadian companies), but there's a long history of US studio films that flopped in the US being big hits in the UK, usually based on subject matter: Battle of Britain, Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), Cromwell, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang... The landscape for licensing foreign films is also very different from territory to territory.

It works both ways, of course: there are big US hits that are practically worthless in the UK market (one reason it's been spared Tyler Perry's ouevre to date) and UK films that flop locally but take off in the States (The Crying Game, Croupier). When you're negotiating for rights, the copyright holders will have different expectations for different markets, and for a lot of product on the market the US is regarded as the smallest potential market and priced accordingly.

Picked up The Boston Strangler and Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte from SAE. Both blind buys, but from good directors and look to be strong thematically, and with interesting cinematography. Spurred into action by the Low Quantity alert for the latter (albeit at TT).
