I was coming back around to picking Mad Magician up just in case, but I guess that makes the decision for me.

If anyone has bought a copy and is having second thoughts due to the possible re-release let me know if you'd be willing to sell it to me at cost. I was just interested in the Three Stooges shorts on the disc.
Well that's 2 in a day that I missed. Literally just about to order The Mad Magician. Figured I was pushing my luck waiting til tomorrow. I just checked earlier and it didn't even seem close to being gone.

That's why you have to jump on the low-quantity titles right away; no telling if they'll be there a day or another year.

I just looked at the September covers for preorders. I can't remember a better month for artwork from TT. Did the stars align with rights being granted or is this going to be a new trend for the future?

For me, the most chilling scene in Mississippi Burning involves a Klan rally where young children are seen cheering in the audience.

I was extremely dismayed to see that much of the supremacist crowds in Charlottesville this past weekend consisted of younger people. I'd like to think that we've moved on since the events portrayed in Mississippi Burning, and, fortunately, we have for the most part, but I was still unsettled by the news this past weekend.

I've ventured too far into the political discussion arena for this forum, but, yes, Mississippi Burning is still a relevant film today.

I'm so grateful that I got my order in for The Mad Magician and Man in the Dark on Saturday. I had no idea that quantities were that low, and it was really only my intuition that prompted me not to wait for any additional price reductions.

But I wonder ... I've read so much lately about 3D becoming passe; in fact, I think IMAX announced within the last two weeks that it was scaling back on the number of new 3D releases. So why did these two 3D Twilight Time titles sell out so comparatively quickly? Are TT connoisseurs more likely to purchase 3D films? Or is 3D still a viable format? I would suspect the former is the case, but I'd be interested in what readers of this forum have to say.

I think that there is a passionate fan base for classic-era (1952-1954) 3D films.

Whatever. I'm crossing Gene Tierney off of my list of favorite classic actresses...
[Show spoiler]I'd have to be an idiot to actually mean that.

It is somewhat of a shame I missed out on Man in the Dark (Mad Magician just didn't interest me after reading about it), but I'll get over it. It's a good release obviously, but if it was something like Inferno 3D that I missed out on, then I would have actually been pretty mad at myself.

Can someone sell me on Miss Sadie Thompson? My wife and I love watching classic 3D movies but I'm afraid this one will bore me.

I've been watching consistently movies from TT, and today I watched The Bullet Train. I didn't know much about it except for a few reviews from IMDb and other sites that rate the PQ and AQ. I learned that it inspired Speed-- a good action movie that I like. I seemed to align this film more with The Taking of Pelham One Two Three--a film which I love. I couldn't help laugh when Matthau is making fun of the Japanese--I think---and they end up speaking and understanding English. Thought that this film was their response. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It dragged in some scenes, felt over dramatic in others, but I recommend it to those who enjoy Japanese or tense action films.

I'd be happy to sell you on it.

Two words: Rita Hayworth.

I'd give it a 4 out of 5. Although watered down for 1950s sensitivities somewhat from the play, the 1928 Gloria Swanson silent version, or Joan Crawford's PreCode version RAIN (1932), it's not at all hard to read between the lines, and it's amazing some of the stuff they actually were able to get away with. It's a fun film and Rita Hayworth is a joy to watch in a strong role, with a couple of good musical numbers thrown in. The 3-D is truly excellent although seems a bit grainier than watching the 2-D version (the way I watched it with its pretty good commentary), which is slightly crisper with more saturated colors. If you like classic 50s 3-D, MISS SADIE THOMPSON is one of the key films to have.

1953’s Miss Sadie Thompson has the reputation of being the most watered down and disposable of the three screen versions of W. Somerset Maugham’s Rain, but while it has a few cosmetic changes and lacks the sordid atmosphere of its two pre-Production Code predecessors with Gloria Swanson and Joan Crawford, it’s certainly not negligible. Most of the changes are fairly cosmetic: although common wisdom has it that Sadie has been changed from hooker to nightclub singer, she’s clearly referred to as a prostitute (even in the film’s trailer) and even admits that she did more than sing for her supper when she worked in a notorious Honolulu brothel, while changing Davidson (Jose Ferrer) from an ordained minister to a self-appointed missionary official doesn’t stop a supporting character from pointing out that his desperate need to stamp out sin is no different to an alcoholic trying to enforce Prohibition. The first half is pretty light and breezy before the dramatic fireworks start, but it's certainly not boring.

It’s a film with two major assets: strong performances from its central trio of Hayworth (who’s got a few more years on the clock and a few more pounds on the hips, which is just what the part calls for), Ferrer and Aldo Ray and, most surprisingly, its use of 3D

Few would have got the chance to see it in 3D. Arriving just as the fad was dying out, after two weeks all the 3D prints were pulled and the film played in 2D only, which is a shame because it’s easily the best use of the format I’ve ever seen, and it plays especially well on Twilight Time’s Blu-ray release. It avoids the technical mistakes of early films and avoids throwing things at the screen – the closest to an in your face effect is Rita Hayworth blowing smoke at the screen when lighting up – but instead creates a real sense of depth and perspective that makes the most of the locations beyond the usual foreground/background cutout effect (the foreground palm trees may pop out but there’s real depth in the distant forest too) and the characters relationship within the frame which is helped by the cast moving and interacting with the set and other characters more than usual for a 3D film. There’s none of the double imaging when things get too close to the camera and only a slightly troublesome lampshade seems awkward in the format, though the problem of backgrounds in interiors seeming to be shot in closeup even when the foreground is in medium shot still endures in a few scenes, as does the tendency to be drawn away from what is happening in the drama by the odd strikingly effective bit of 3D in the frame. But it's one of the few films of that era where it doesn't feel gimmicky even though a few shots like the camera tracking through a crowd of GIs to Hayworth dancing really stand out.

I'd jump at it.

I was always fascinated with 3D films but never really got to experience them properly until recently. I missed the '50s heyday by just a couple of years and the couple of other decade revival attempts (like The Mask or Comin' at Ya!) didn't go anywhere. Even the current technology eluded me because our local theater(s) weren't 3D capable until a few years back. When 3D BDs appearied I started buying them with the idea I'd get a new tv soon. That didn't happen until earlier this year when LG and Sony announced dropping that feature. Now, I have a sizable stockpile to watch and ordered The Mad Magician last week.

Will we get a review on Comes A Horseman? I really want this title but I'd like to read a bit on how good, or not so good, the transfer is.

Darn it. I had Mad Magician in my cart yesterday but it wasn't below 50 yet and I still had to decide what else to buy. Missed out on this one

Edit:10:52am. Put in an order for the remaining items in my cart.
