After watching Huston's The Kremlin Letter a couple of days ago, last night I though I'd check out his film The Mackintosh Man - which I had also not seen before. I enjoyed it, and found it the more satisfying experience - perhaps because of its more intimate scope and scale. Unfortunately, no BD release anywhere, but I think I'll pick up the DVD as there is definitely replay value.

On the subject of accents, Paul Newman's Australian turn in the film is a bit of a hoot. For a notoriously serious actor of the method school, it was a rather uneven effort, even
[Show spoiler]as an American intentionally impersonating an Aussie for the purposes of the plot
. Still, a good film. Would make a great TT release on BD, but I'm guessing if we get anything it will be from WAC.

Just a heads up, the only pressed disc they did was part of a Paul Newman box set. (The individual disc shows up pretty regularly on ebay, so you should be able to get it.) The stand-alone is a Warner Archive DVD-R.

Thanks for the info.

The on-demand HD PQ was quite nice, so this would look good on BD.

Yes. Avoid the Warner Archive release if you can!

Just to add to thatguamguy's info.

The pressed disc was released in two sets, both of which are OOP.

This one had all the discs in individual slimline cases. So if someone is breaking up a set you can buy it on its own:

But it was also re-bundled as part of this TCM Greatest Classic Legends Set, which might be a more economical buy if you also want Harper and Somebody Up There Likes Me (and the DVD of Cool Hand Luke too, I suppose).

Bizarre as it sounds, the plot is a pretty straight ripoff of an old Roger Moore episode of The Saint. It's always been a pretty roundly reviled film - Newman hated it so much he suggested he team up with Robert Redford to make The Man Who Would Be King for Huston to take away the bad taste it left in his mouth before suddenly seeing sense and suggesting Connery and Caine instead - but it's an okay unassuming enough thriller. Internationally it went out as the main feature in a double-bill with Cahill.

Those TCM sets are just re-bundles? Cool, I had thought they were 2 double feature discs (not that specific one, I wasn't even aware of that, but in general).

I'll be wanting to see a review of Forever Amber before I order it. The Technicolor negs were destroyed by Fox in the seventies. I have Captain From Castile and although it generally looks fine, darker scenes are problematic. A lot of Forever Amber is dark and the current Fox restoration team only has Eastmancolor dupe elements to work from. Better to not pre-order for me.

Very excited about WUTHERING HEIGHTS. I saw this in the theater on first run when I was in junior high, and was captivated by the whole English moor ambience, the music, and the very haunting final image. I even fell in love with the main title sequence that has the words going from lavender to blue as they fade in, then back to lavender as they fade out. For a low budget American International movie, this one is a treasure. Can't wait to listen to the isolated score track!

I mean, do you think it's going to be issued any time soon in some magnificent restoration edition? If you like the film, why not order?

Have you seen the Fiennes-Binoche version?
How it compares to that?
because I like that film very much.

I don’t know about Rory, but I would’ve ordered Day 1 before TT de-valued their titles with all the sales. Right now for me, it’s a $20 sale title with a great transfer or a $15 sale title with a mediocre one. I’m not worried about it selling out any time soon.

Can any Canadians here tell me how long shipping usually takes from twilightimemovies.com? I ordered from there over 3 weeks ago and am getting a little nervous!

I ordered from them at the start of last month and it took about 7 days. I was keeping an eye on the tracking info, and shipped out of Texas fairly quickly. I am in Ontario.

I, however, ordered from SAE and that has been about 2 weeks...

Almost in the same boat as you. I saw it 3 months after the first run at the drive-in theater I too was captivated by the ambiance of the period, the music, and Dalton's performance.

Yeah, I had just ordered the James Garner double bill ('Support Your...') and it came in that same size box.

No, the only other version of Wuthering Heights that I've seen is the 1939 with Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier. I saw that when I was in high school, I think, and found it rather boring in comparison to the 1970 version. I'll have to look out for the Fiennes/Binoche film--I like both of those actors.
