Had to take the plunge on the Walter Hill signature. There were enough TT titles on my wishlist (and WILD BILL was one of them) that getting the freebie extra made it worthwhile.

CAPTAIN FROM CASTILLE
YOU'LL NEVER GET RICH
BANANAS
GUN FURY (3D)
DOCTOR DOLITTLE
WILD BILL (Autographed)

Only just came across the Twilight Time website, and there's a few titles (all region-free) that aren't even available on DVD here in the UK. I'll be getting:

Bridge at Remagen
Broken Lance
Dragonwyck
House of Bamboo
The Pirates of Blood River
Scream and Scream Again
Where the Sidewalk Ends

Oh well, looks like my credit card will be taking a bashing yet again.

Had to spring for that Walter Hill signed copy (even though I think "Wild Bill" is kind of shitty haha), so I picked up the four titles this month at $20 off along with "The Hospital" and "Sayonara". First TT titles I've picked up at full price in a long, long time, but you only live once, right?

What is Dragonwyck like? Vincent Price makes me think horror but it sounds more drama from the description.

You're right, it's not the usual Vincent Price horror picture. It's years since I've seen this film, in which he plays a wealthy landowner who invites Gene Tierney to come and stay with him. Price has always been one of my favourite actors, and another couple of his early films I like are Laura and Leave Her To Heaven - I think these were made by Fox as well and, like Dragonwyck, they were dramas rather than horror.

I really love the Edgar Allan Poe film adaptations he did with Roger Corman, and thankfully I already have these on blu-ray. But for me, he was a very versatile actor and could turn his hand to drama and comedy, as well as his more usual horror villain characters.

I feel compelled to own every movie starring Vincent Price, even the ones that do not seem up my alley at first glance (The Whales of August).

I also feel compelled to own every movie starring Gene Tierney, because I'm fascinated with her and her life.

I also own a disproportionate number of older movies about beautiful women who are hired to work governess jobs at idyllic estates.

As such, Dragonwyck was a no-brainer purchase decision.

Although there's no supernatural element, it's the kind of film that Crimson Peak wanted to be, a dark gothic romance with tortured characters. It's very much in the tradition of Jane Eyre and Rebecca. It didn't work for me the first time I saw it, but I revisited it last year and found it magnificent on a second viewing.

It has Gene Tierney in it, what more do you want?

My thoughts exactly. Even a film which isn't a particularly great one, the mere fact that Vincent Price is in it makes it worth watching. And I would agree with you with regards to Gene Tierney too.

No, sadly I haven't either. I gather Twilight Time released this about 3 or 4 years ago (according to Wikipedia) but unfortunately is now out of print.

Hopefully someone else releases it. I know that a lot of movies that TT owned are starting to be released by other companies like Kino.

That would be nice. In the UK there is a blu-ray available of this film, however it's a Spanish import and unfortunately these are usually bootleg copies rather than official releases.

I watched the BD of one of Woody Allen's most underrated films, "Another Woman", last night. The film is essentially a showcase for the transcendent talent of Gena Rowlands. She plays a professor going through a midlife crisis while attempting to write a book. Throughout the film, she gradually begins to feel that her life is increasingly empty and that she has alienated the people closest to her. She is in a loveless marriage with her aloof husband, played by Ian Holm, while she looks down upon her brother (Harris Yulin). She's alienated her best friend, played by the great Sandy Dennis, and regrets not pursuing a relationship with the man she loves (Gene Hackman).

As with most Allen films, plot is secondary to observation and character arc. Rowlands' performance is once again a testimony to the fact that she is one of the best actresses of the past 50 years. Her character has masked her emptiness with a certain level of success and status, but it all comes back to haunt her as she contemplates the life she has lived. She wants to care for people, but falls back into a mode of distance and condescension without being fully conscious of it. She has to confront these harsh truths about herself while trying to further herself professionally and personally.

There is a tendency to overlook some of Allen's more dramatic work because it feels so out of step with the kind of films he's closely associated with. But this film is not a huge departure from acknowledged classics like "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Hannah and Her Sisters", just far more committed to dramatic elements. But, make no mistake, this is one of Allen's best from what is his prime as a filmmaker.

The cast features actors such as Holm, Dennis, Hackman, Mia Farrow, Martha Plimpton, and Blythe Danner, but it's completely Rowlands' film. It's also fascinating to watch given that her husband, John Cassavetes, was gravely ill at the time this film was made and would pass soon after. It breezes by at a quick 80 minutes, which helps the introspective nature of the film to never wear out its welcome. I really recommend it.

I have also never understood why this isn't more highly regarded, definitely one of Woody's best outside of the big 4 or 5.
