Last night I pulled Bunny Lake is Missing from my mile-high stack of unwatched BD. What an interesting film. I found the story of sibling love and madness mixed with police procedural, and its offbeat nature, all quite compelling.
One of the most interesting aspects of the film is Preminger's choice of cast. From the little I've read about the great director, he had a reputation as a demanding and exacting taskmaster who intimidated actors. Yet in Carol Lynley and Keir Dullea, he cast relative unknowns as the film's sibling protagonists, and surrounded them with some of Britain's most accomplished talent (Laurence Olivier, Noel Coward, Martita Hunt, Finlay Currie, etc). While Lynley acquits herself well, Dullea simply looks like he is trying too hard, and comes across as an enthusiastic amateur. However, their presence in the film playing against established greats certainly does amplify the "fish out of water" aspect of the story. As the police detective heading up the investigation into the disappearance of a girl who may or may not even exist, Olivier is about as understated as I've ever seen him - his role juxtaposing nicely with the intensity of Lynley's near-permanent emotional turmoil. Coward has a quite remarkable cameo as a kinky landlord, which I enjoyed immensely and which added to the overall quirkiness of the film. The black and white CinemaScope presentation is extremely solid and pleasing throughout, although at times lacked contrast and seemed a little pale (I'd be interested to compare with the Powerhouse Indicator release from the UK). There is also some excellent camera work that struck me as quite innovative for the time (1965) and seemed a precursor to some of the Steadicam techniques we are familiar with now (following an actor into and then out of a room, etc.). I think like many viewers, I was able to work out the "twist" before it was revealed, but that didn't spoil the impact at all. In fact, there is plenty to enjoy in multiple repeat viewings. I know the TT release is OOP, but there seem to be copies available around the full retail price. And of course, the Powerhouse Indicator release is region-free. And let's not forget Noel Coward's immortal comment on meeting the leading man, "Keir Dullea, gone tomorrow."

I just purchased it. I had already posted it in another thread before this one. Must have only had a few copies. I'll let you know when I receive it on Wednesday if it is valid. Otherwise, I'll just return it.

Was there ever a low quantity alert for Support You Local Sheriff/Gunfighter?
I was totally going to buy that one, but didn't realize there was any urgency... Can we get an update on low quantity titles as Screen Archives? I know we've seen some postings recently about low quantity titles at TwilightTimeMovies.com but since Screen Archives has the larger stock, those are the ones to really keep track of. I want to make a second order if there are any titles preparing to sell out that I really want. Last edited by YogiYahooeys; 02-11-2018 at 04:51 PM. |

I finally got around to watching Operation Crossbow via On-Demand last night. A decent mix of WWII and spy action, although I didn't think George Peppard quite had the chops to carry the film.
Infuriatingly, it was in the wrong aspect ratio (should have been 2.35:1, but was 16x9; a quite common annoyance ![]() I know there is a WB DVD available, but am I right in thinking that as an original MGM release, it could end up with TT? Or would WAC be more likely? (This stuff gets quite confusing ![]() |
