I was feeling in an odd mood tonight, so I popped in Woody Allen's brilliant "Interiors". I truly believe this is one of the best films of the 70s and maybe my favorite Allen film next to "Hannah and Her Sisters". At the center is the towering performance of Geraldine Page, who plays a woman so passive aggressive that it causes pain to everyone around her, but she provides an occasional moment of tenderness that keeps her daughters and ex-husband coming back for more. It's hard to define how special Page's performance is in this film. It's simply transcendent.

Diane Keaton and Mary Beth Hurt are brilliant as her daughters. Keaton is a successful writer who is constantly bickering with her boyfriend (the great Richard Jordan) and Hurt is trying to find her true calling, resentful of the success of her sister and angry that she has to be the primary sounding board for her mother. Keaton, Page, and Hurt give remarkable performances that are so grounded in reality, it's scary. Jordan was one of the best actors of his era, a great talent, who lends a sense of humanity as Keaton's intelligent, yet boorish partner. EG Marshall is also fantastic as the father who is trying to escape Page's grasp and live a little bit.

The film takes a bit of a turn with the arrival of Marshall's new love interest, played by Maureen Stapleton. She is terrific as a woman who is completely foreign to the frigid, overly intellectual daughters. In a sense, she is replacing Page's character, but Page's influence on her daughters is so overwhelming, both good and bad, that Stapleton's character will have a hell of a task on her hands.

This is a film that is clearly influenced by Ingmar Bergman, but Allen makes it his own, as it's more dialogue-heavy and ridden with neuroses than many of Bergman's films. But, aesthetically, and given how much silence plays a part in the proceedings, it's clearly an ode to Bergman.

"Interiors" is one of my favorite films of all-time. The only slight criticism I'd have is the slightly underdeveloped character of the third sister, played by Kristen Griffith, but it ends up working because she's somewhat of a vague abstraction to the rest of the family because she's so rarely around. "Interiors" is close to a perfect film IMO and I prefer it to some of Woody's more popular work.

I don't recognize any of those titles, but the great thing about this thread is that I'm pretty sure that by the time they're released, somebody will have talked me into at least one of them.

Cinderella Liberty is the only one I've seen, it's a great, gritty 70s drama with James Caan. It's the complete opposite of a warm and fuzzy family drama but, yet, it's heartwarming at the same time. It's something that could only have been made in that decade.

Funny, I saw the Fox Cinema Classics DVD on sale for $4.99 at a local discount store a few weeks ago and was very tempted to buy it but for some reason decided against it.

It's also the first of Marsha Mason's four Oscar nominations (John Williams also picked up two nominations, for score and song), and the first of her two Golden Globe wins. Like the film itself, it seems strange that she seems to have almost been forgotten whenever people talk about the other female sweethearts of the awards circuit in the 70s. Really glad to be able to upgrade this one.

Surprisingly no interest in the newly announced titles.

Good thing as I still need to catch up on some previous months.

Even without interest in these, his does provide positive reassurance that the studios are still interested in preserving catalog titles in high quality, even less "important" films, and that is great news for those of us that appreciate discovering the past.

In some ways Marsha Mason’s reputation has been hurt rather than helped by her association with Neil Simon (her husband for most of the 70s). I think a lot of people attribute her success to him, but Cinderella Liberty proves that she was a talent in her own right.

Speaking of writers, the novel and screenplay of Cinderella Liberty were written by Darryl Ponicsan, who also wrote the novel The Last Detail, the movie of which opened the same weekend as Cinderella Liberty.

Cinderella Liberty sounds great.

James Caan?

Vilmos Zsigmond?

John Williams?

Would be pretty hard to mess that up.

I suspect it's like The Fury, interesting despite it's flaws.

Just Cinderella Liberty for me as well. Excellent Marsha Mason performance and one of Caan's best and most underrated.

I'm probably good for Cinderella Liberty, and I'm definitely good for The Revolt of Mamie Stover.

Definitely Cinderella Liberty for me. I may consider the other 3 titles when they hit $10, just like all of the announcements the past 2 months.

I'm definitely in for The Revolt of Mamie Stover (more 50s melodrama is always welcome on blu-ray) and might also pick up The Children of Huang Shi.
