Does anyone listen to the isolated music track on some of these discs? I thought the music would be continuous, but there are many minutes where there is no sound. It's synced to whats on the screen. Maybe it's only like that on some of the titles?

That’s how isolated scores work; they synch to what’s on screen.

I don't really see the appeal of that feature to be honest. I mean, I like listening to music scores on CD if the music is good, but looking at a movie and hearing only the score seems weird.

100% agreed. Spooky, even.

I see the appeal for films that never had an official soundtrack release (At Close Range is a great example). Let’s just say that unreleased OSTs manage to “find” their way into my iTunes library.

Isolated score tracks only play music where music was "spotted" to the film originally, although most of the TT tracks will throw in various chatter from the composer and/or session musicians before and after cues, which I always find fascinating to listen to. These are not "soundtrack albums", and shouldn't be though of as such.

Personally, I'd love it if TT started adding chapter indexes for the music cues, so you could skip directly to the next once you've finished listening to them. I remember a 1996 laserdisc of The Omen which had chapter indexes for the isolated score track, and that thing was GOLD for a Jerry Goldsmith junkie like me.

Few things make you more appreciative for the "invisible" art of film scoring than watching a movie shorn entirely of dialogue and sound effects, leaving just the music. I have gotten a great deal of enjoyment from TT's practice of adding isolated score tracks to 95% of their library, even for films where I already own the soundtrack album. I remember blind-buying Strange Invaders and falling in love with John Addison's splendid score, and then discovering the soundtrack album had gone OOP years before. I was disappointed by that, but having the entire score isolated and with excellent sound on the TT Blu was the next best thing.

It depends on the score, the composer and the film, but sometimes it's a terrific option. Case in point: The Blue Max, which includes not one but two isolated score tracks for Jerry Goldsmith's remarkable score - one an extended version of the full score, the other including alternate cues and filling in the gaps with a film historians' audio commentary. Goldsmith wrote a lot more music than was used in the film, which opted to reuse his main theme in places he'd written different cues for and in others remove them entirely, and although the deleted cues aren't mixed in with the soundtrack, it's amazing to hear his bravura six minute cue for the German attack sequence that was completely removed in favor of sound effects finally against the sequence, which really transforms the scene and leaves you questioning the sanity of whoever decided to ditch it.

Put in my order for Birth of a Nation today. I debated it as I already own the Kino edition...but I hear the Photoplay is a big improvement image wise and I’ve always hated the Carl Davis score (shocking as I think his work is generally excellent).

I noticed at twilight time they only have 6 copies of Save your legs remaining

They also have going fast titles that will sell out soon of the following :

American Buffalo
Guess who's coming to Dinner
Nights of the Generals
Emperor of the North

all are on sale

Also noticed at SAE titles that might sell out fast based on being on sale and not being available at Twilight time are :

Hardcore
Cat Ballou
The Hound of the Baskervilles
The train

I have some of these myself and might buy a couple of ones I don't have .

Just giving this information to whomever cares and might be interested in any of these before they sell out . I know I have been frustrated before when a title has sold out when I was to late to act on getting it .

$15 is usually when I splurge on multiple titles. Now there are some films I nabbed at $29.99 and then a few at $9.95. So I guess is all balances out for me too.

Speaking of Birth of a Nation, TT said that May films will be shipped out tomorrow. Maybe I can get my copy by Sunday, though I'm happy to wait until after Memorial Day.

They could easily continue the theme with "My Gal Sal" and "Let's Make Love"
