I just got done watching the feature film but haven't yet delved into the extras. This is one TT film that really needed a review as this is the definitive home video release. So I'm glad it got a site review.

Shout out to Nick Redman!! Your tenacity and resolve have provided videophiles with many great home video releases. I was not happy with your pricing model I admit, but I still admire you and your team and the product legacy of Twilight Time video.

I just got back from watching the new documentary about Leon Vitali called Filmworker and Nick Redman is in a few scenes talking about Vitali and Kubrick. Redman looked well in the doc. so I hope the health problems are nothing serious.

Glad I snagged mine. The last sale they had (which was also a 15 titles for 15$) only "U-Turn" sold out with "The Last Detail" being sold out on TT but still purchasable from Screen Archives.

I wonder now that SAE sold out of mississippi mermaid from their 7 for $70 deal when are they likely to add another title to that offer ?
Hope it's 1 I may want I might want to get in on the deal as their is only 6 that I want right now I need that 7th .

So I've finally been delved into all the extras minus the original outtakes and camera tests, The Drummer of the 8th short, and recording sessions footage. The Birth of a Nation: The Legacy , The Clansman: From Stage to Screen, The Coward film, and Kevin Brownlow's text essay were all superb extras.

I've also wondered about this. I assumed it's a 50/50 split, but I'd be curious to know if it's not.

I would say that it's probably half and half; it would be the most logical.

My viewing of this one is long overdue, but I finally got around to checking it out last night...



Tony Petrakis, played by Robert Wagner (Hart to Hart, The Towering Inferno) and his father, Mike, played by Gilbert Roland (The Bad and the Beautiful) are Greek sponge divers off the coast of Florida who excel at their occupation, despite the dangers of the underwater reefs and a rivalry with another sponge fishing operation run by a nearby Conch family, the Rhys. When the father and son intrude on a stretch of Key West fished by their rivals, Tony meets and instantly falls in love with the lovely Gwyneth Rhys, played by Terry Moore (Peyton Place, Shack Out on 101), and is threatened by her villainous suitor, Arnold, played by Robert Graves (Airplane!, Stalag 17). Ensuing circumstances compel Tony and his father to take the ultimate risk by diving for a lucrative catch of sponges at the 12-Mile Reef, a deadly spot that once claimed the life of Tony's brother.

The 1953 Technicolor adventure, Beneath the 12-Mile Reef, is a thinly-veiled retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set against the backdrop of Florida fishing communities, and the plot barely rises above mere surface-level entertainment, but its eye candy appeal more than adequately compensates for any shortcomings of the melodramatic narrative. This was one of the earliest motion pictures filmed with the CinemaScope lens, which presented a widescreen format that enabled the movie industry to compete with the popularity of television, and the underwater scenes are still breathtaking by today's standards. The Tarpon Springs and Key West locations are quite picturesque both in and out of the water. This film earned Edward Cronjager an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

Bernard Herrmann's music score, one of his all-time best, is for the ages. The music during the diving sequences really amps up the tension, even when the outcome of the story is predictable. Herrmann's work, as heard on the Blu-ray of this film, puts me a few steps closer toward possibly replacing my sound bar with a full surround-sound system, although the logistics would be tough for my living room setup.

I developed a childhood crush on Terry Moore when I first saw her in the original 1949 version of Mighty Joe Young, and her appearance in any film brings a smile to my face. She never enjoyed the same iconic fame as actresses like Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, but she is, nonetheless, a truly elegant beauty. She continues to grace cinema to this day, and recently had a part in the True Detective television series.

Beneath the 12-Mile Reef may not be the most original movie of the 1950s, but it's certainly one of the most remarkable in terms of visuals and sound. The underwater climax, where Wagner's Tony battles an evil octopus, is wildly fun filmmaking through and through.

This Twilight Time Blu-ray brings out the best of this movie with robust video and audio presentations that are practically beyond reproach. I don't usually listen to isolated scores on these Twilight Time discs, but I made an exception last night for this one after enjoying the main feature. A 44-minute documentary on the life and career of Robert Wagner is icing on the cake. (I did not realize until last night that the impossibly beautiful Natasha Gregson Wagner, who appears with John Cusack in High Fidelity, is Robert Wagner's stepdaughter.)

It would be cool if TT would release Sink the Bismarck!. It's disappointing how this gem is not on BluRay in the US or even UK.

As Allison yearns for life experience and tries to edge closer to the shy Norman, played by Russ Tamblyn (West Side Story), her mother captures the attention of the new school principal. The lives of all of these people are soon irreversibly changed by passions, rumors, revelations, and crimes that shake the idyllic facade of their community.

The 1957 drama, Peyton Place, which inspired a popular television soap opera of the same name, was based on the 1956 Grace Metalious novel, a sharp indictment of small town life that remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over a year, despite its surface reputation as a trashy and immoral work of literature. I was not alive at the time, but I would like to think that Metalious's novel was the 1950s equivalent of Fifty Shades of Grey, which has mysteriously sold 125 million copies despite the fact that upstanding citizens turn up their noses at its mere mention. This film adaption, directed by Mark Robson (The Harder They Fall), emerged during the last gasp of the Hays Production Code and, as such, slightly sanitizes the novel's more explicitly controversial themes concerning incest, abortion, adultery, and murder, but it still packs a solidly lurid punch that makes its 157-minute run time fly by at a lightning pace. All the while, the cinematography of William C. Mellor and the music score by Franz Waxman lend a colorful majesty to the proceedings, as if to reinforce the perception of Peyton Place as an idealized embodiment of Norman Rockwell Americana.

This may seem frivolous, but I try to purchase every Blu-ray release of a 1950s or 1960s film that was shot in CinemaScope, because I love the way that images from that format jump out of the screen. In this regard, Peyton Place stands tall alongside the likes of Rebel Without a Cause, Forbidden Planet, The Seven Year Itch, and The Apartment. In high definition, the images of the trees, the oak leaves, the massive school building, the main street, and the town square take on a renewed splendor.

Be on the lookout for Lorne Greene (Bonanza, Battlestar Galactica) as a town prosecutor.

This Twilight Time Blu-ray sports a near flawless presentation on all fronts. An AMC backstory supplement and a location supplement are all in good fun, but the highlights of the extras are the excellently informative commentary track from Willard Carroll and an almost equally engaging track with Russ Tamblyn and Terry Moore. A great booklet essay rounds out this impressive release.

The Maine scenery adds charm to the film as well. One of my favorite sequence is probably when Norman and Allison go up to the woods and look over the town; it’s a gorgeous shot. Even when they’re lying on the rocks; you can tell they are not on a set. Growing up and living in Maine, it’s a treat seeing vintage Maine in an era where most Hollywood films set in New England are usually shot in Los Angeles or Massachusetts.

Anyone know or have any idea why SAE has not added a title to the 7 for $70 offer ? Mississippi mermaid sold out on their site. I noticed that every time they sell out on one they add another in the past usually adding a new one after there sale if they run out of one .

They keep 26 titles for that offer but now they have only 25 ?

I usually would not care about this but there are 6 titles I want from that list & I was hoping by them adding another I may want then I can get a 7 for $70 deal .

Anyone know or have any idea
