BEAT THE DEVIL (1953) (alternate extended version; 2016 restoration)

THE RETURN OF FRANK JAMES (1940)

UNTAMED (1955) (brand new 4K transfer)

YANKS (1979)

Great month.....Henry Fonda, Gene Tierney, Humphrey Bogart, Tyrone Power, Jennifer Jones, Richard Gere, and directors John Huston, Fritz Lang, Henry King, and John Schlesinger.
I'm in for Beat the Devil and well The Return of Frank James looks appealing.

The TT disc of Beat the Devil is the original cut - the shorter US version was re-edited from the 95-minute version that opened in the UK three-and-a-half months earlier, changing the structure and adding Bogart's voiceover.

Very interesting. Wasn't Beat the Devil a rumored Criterion title?

Exciting news about "Untamed" being released in January. More Tyrone Power is always a good thing! Hoping that "The Black Rose" is somewhere in TT's cue for the near future.

Okay, then: "I'd love a copy that includes the US theatrical cut, even if it's in SD, just for curiosity's sake."

Pencil me in for...

Beat the Devil (so that I can retire my Film Detective BD-R)
The Return of Frank James (more Fritz Lang and more Gene Tierney)
Untamed (An old-school movie with an Africa setting)

Yanks sounds fun, but I need to be more judicious with my blind buys, so it probably won't make the cut.

I just noticed that Untamed (1955), 20th Century Fox's epic of South African colonialism, the Great Trek, and clashes with the Zulu Empire, is being released on January 22, 2019. This happens to be the 140th anniversary of the twin battles of Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana (January 22, 1879), when the Zulus turned back the first British invasion of their empire. Both of these events have been portrayed on film in Zulu (1964) and Zulu Dawn (1979).

As someone who has read extensively on the colonial history of South Africa, I find this very cool.

I wasn't sure of this, but it looks like Film Detective released that version, so it's at least available. I do think they should include it here as a bonus in some capacity, it's public domain anyway.

EDIT: Release date for all four titles is January 22

BEAT THE DEVIL (1953) (alternate extended version; 2016 restoration)

THE RETURN OF FRANK JAMES (1940)

UNTAMED (1955) (brand new 4K transfer)

YANKS (1979)

I’m in for all but Yanks. The Return of Frank James was on my wish list; Beat the Devil has got to be better than the Film Detective version (at least it will be pressed); and Untamed is totally a new one on me, but sounds terrific. Good, good month!

Have any titles currently on sale dropped into the "low quantity" levels?

"Runaway Train" sold out and "Eye of The Needle" is no longer avaliable on TT's site but still is on SAE; so that one is most likely on lower stock by now. Other than those two, the others haven't had any warning.

This was just posted on Facebook:

Dear TT Family - just a heads-up that apparently our totally incompetent manufacturers, Technicolor, have shipped the 4 October titles in blue eco cases - we neither use blue cases, or the dreadful eco cases, so we will have to figure out a solution - for those of you who don't mind the blue eco cases - mazeltov! For the rest of us we'll have to figure out what to do. There is of course nothing to be done today, but we'll be on their (blue eco) case tomorrow...Please accept our apologies and we'll simply move on to the next crisis, whatever it may be!

Seems like their releases have occasionally come in eco-cases before. Not sure why this is so hard for them to deal with. Just ship a blank regular case or cases to the people that ordered the titles in question.

Bit impractical, don't you think? There are lots of people, like myself, who are fine with getting the eco-cases because I can just switch it out with a regular one when it gets here.

Considering they already charge a premium price for their product, I don't know why their customers should have to eat the price of a replacement case even if it is just another buck or whatever. I think they should at least offer a replacement to the people that want them as a sign of good will, but that's just me.

I've got regular cases on hand that I can switch when the Twilight Time titles roll in. It's not the ideal situation, but it's hardly tragic.

Well I'm sure whatever solution they come up with, if they do come up with one at all, there will inevitably be people who complain about it and trot out the usual boilerplate complaints about business models, prices, etc.

The Fabulous Baker Boys was quite enjoyable, much more so than I was expecting. Predictable but with great characters, smart dialogue and lovely music. Basically what mainstream cinema should have more of but doesn’t.
