A masterpiece is a piece of work that defines an artist. Something he or she is best known for that represents the absolute peak of their creativity and success.
That would be "magnum opus".

Even if you prefer Cross of Iron to the Wild Bunch, to say that Cross of Iron is a masterpiece or an "absolute" masterpiece is showing you have no credibility as you cannot delineate between a personal preference and taking an objective view.
FYI an artist can have more than one masterpiece.

And with respect to commercial filmmakers, they still have to represent an artist's creative, critical and commercial peak and in the case of Peckinpah, The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs would be those examples. Certainly not Cross of Iron. To some it may be a great film but it's no masterpiece. I may personally think Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia is a great, misunderstood film, but I wouldn't be so silly as to brand that a masterpiece either.
Yeah, but Roger Ebert called it one ('some kind of a bizarre masterpiece', to be exact).

So, anyway, who died and made you the foremost authority on film?

Actually in this case they're anything but synonyms, if you agree that an artist can have more than masterpiece.

Not going to touch this.

In any event, I consider Ride the High Country a minor masterpiece

And on that note, I'm out. Life's too short to deal with the level of ridiculous pomposity displayed by Bosley F*cking Crowther over here.

Happy Holidays, fellow Twilight Time thread denizens and Blu-ray lovers! Hope 2019 is another great year for us collectors!

Critically or commercially, Cross of Iron is no masterpiece and even if there is a modern re-evaluation of it where its reputation is better now than what it was at the time of its release, it still doesn't attain the lofty position of "masterpiece". There are other films such as Straw Dogs which would be positioned far ahead of Cross of Iron if you were looking to substitute The Wild Bunch.
Okay, Merry Christmas!

I've always thought that Christmas was Jesus' magnum opus followed closely by Cross of Wood and Bring Me The Head of John the Baptist.

I'm sure there are films that you like that I don't and, obviously, vice versa.
That guy should get off your case, but I will say that "masterpiece" kind of implies a general consensus that something is great. Or maybe it doesn't! I dunno, semantics.

Anyway yes let's all like what we like.

It's fine man, I've got a thick skin. I think we call a film a masterpiece on our own terms sometimes. At least that's what I do. There are films that I love that a majority of people hate, and it goes the other way. Largo1965 is very picky with terms. He seems like a fun dude at parties haha.

If I cancel my order of Alfredo Garcia will this settle the argument?

Blu-ray.com in rare "Review of a Twilight Time Blu-ray" situation...

Good to see a review of this one as it's one I'm really interested in picking up at some point soon.

I'm surprised they didn't also get Mary, Queen of Scots... similar subject matter, same director, and new version currently playing to tie in with.

Alfredo Garcia is amazing but I will tell you there is a massively superior version out in the UK and while it's region-locked there's a chance that scan will come out here someday when Twilight Time's license is up. Something to consider.

I have the TT version, and I wondered if that was really as good as the PQ could get. That said, I was still satisfied with the purchase for $15. Very strange film.

As I said earlier this month when I made a mini-order, I planned on making a larger order after Christmas from SAE:

Last two are blind buys, but I long wanted them and couldn't pass them up at $14.95 being a huge Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing fan and the last one being a highly acclaimed film giving Susan Hayward an Best Actress Oscar and many other nominations.

Baskervilles is one of my top five Hammers (and Holmes too), and Christmas is the perfect time for Sherlock Holmes. Well, except for Will Ferrell's take on him...

Yeah, I'm also a huge Sherlock Holmes fan which is also why I've been interested in finally getting this one. I need to pick up the silent versions Flicker Alley has released next though that's waiting until there's a coupon.

Maybe they did and are waiting to release it when the new version is released on disc.

I wouldn't worry. I had an order ship on October 25th, just after the strike began, and it arrived on December 12th. What does the tracking number for the parcel say? It should at least tell you when it departed from the United States.
