A masterpiece is a piece of work that defines an artist. Something he or she is best known for that represents the absolute peak of their creativity and success.

That would be "magnum opus".

Even if you prefer Cross of Iron to the Wild Bunch, to say that Cross of Iron is a masterpiece or an "absolute" masterpiece is showing you have no credibility as you cannot delineate between a personal preference and taking an objective view.

FYI an artist can have more than one masterpiece.

And with respect to commercial filmmakers, they still have to represent an artist's creative, critical and commercial peak and in the case of Peckinpah, The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs would be those examples. Certainly not Cross of Iron. To some it may be a great film but it's no masterpiece. I may personally think Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia is a great, misunderstood film, but I wouldn't be so silly as to brand that a masterpiece either.

Actually in this case they're anything but synonyms, if you agree that an artist can have more than masterpiece.

I wouldn't call myself the foremost authority.

Not going to touch this.

In any event, I consider Ride the High Country a minor masterpiece

Critically or commercially, Cross of Iron is no masterpiece and even if there is a modern re-evaluation of it where its reputation is better now than what it was at the time of its release, it still doesn't attain the lofty position of "masterpiece". There are other films such as Straw Dogs which would be positioned far ahead of Cross of Iron if you were looking to substitute The Wild Bunch.

It's fine man, I've got a thick skin. I think we call a film a masterpiece on our own terms sometimes. At least that's what I do. There are films that I love that a majority of people hate, and it goes the other way. Largo1965 is very picky with terms. He seems like a fun dude at parties haha.

I'm surprised they didn't also get Mary, Queen of Scots... similar subject matter, same director, and new version currently playing to tie in with.

Alfredo Garcia is amazing but I will tell you there is a massively superior version out in the UK and while it's region-locked there's a chance that scan will come out here someday when Twilight Time's license is up. Something to consider.

I have the TT version, and I wondered if that was really as good as the PQ could get. That said, I was still satisfied with the purchase for $15. Very strange film.

Yeah, I'm also a huge Sherlock Holmes fan which is also why I've been interested in finally getting this one. I need to pick up the silent versions Flicker Alley has released next though that's waiting until there's a coupon.

I wouldn't worry. I had an order ship on October 25th, just after the strike began, and it arrived on December 12th. What does the tracking number for the parcel say? It should at least tell you when it departed from the United States.
