One thing that review of Glass Dolls doesn't pick up on - probably because the reviewer didn't do a comparison - is that unlike the German edition, Twilight Time’s disc offers the choice of the US English dub and the original Italian (properly subtitled rather than dubtitled from the US script), both of which synch perfectly with the actors but which have a very different tone. In part the Italian dialogue is more poetic or simply better written/translated – a waiter’s joke “Don’t be startled, madame, a fireman is standing by” when lighting a flambé becomes the clumsier “Don’t worry, in emergencies I’m able to extinguish it” - but the English dub makes much of the corruption of Prague’s communist political system, even adding off-camera dialogue where none exists in the Italian version to ram home the point. Thus Jean Sorel’s paean to the city’s timeless character in the Italian dub becomes a paean to the survival of individualism in a communist system in the American dub.
The Italian version certainly takes the odd potshot at the system where the dollar trumps idealism every time (one reason most of it was shot in Zagreb rather than Prague), but it takes a more general view of the film’s menace not as a corrupt group of putrefying communist party elite but as the same kind of insulated old money and power feeding off the young they sacrifice and feed off, metaphorically or literally, that you can find in every country. The corruption that Aldo Lado is addressing is more universal than specific to any political ideology, exemplified by the physical decay all around, the semi-deserted streets often inhabited only by the infirm, the blind or the disabled, and the Italian dub is more reflective of his intentions. Also of note is the fact that Matteo Molinari interviewed Lado at length before doing the audio commentary, so while the director isn't present on the track there's nonetheless a lot of good information that he provided. Indicator's Hardcore is sold out, so if you want that movie now's the time to buy. It's a solid and unique film I highly recommend.

Indicator does offer a standard edition though. No booklet but the disc is the exact same so it is still a better release than the TT one.

Oh right I forgot they did that for a second. The Twilight Time has exclusive commentaries I think. Either way, buy the movie somewhere if the plot intrigues you. It's very well done. I'm not a HUGE fan of the ending, but overall... very well done.

![]() The Eddy Duchin Story is a distinctly superior Hollywood biopic, not least thanks to inspired helming by George Sidney, one of the most underrated directors of the 40s and 50s. The story of pianist Eddy Duchin’s rise to fame is the stuff of great melodrama – a rapid rise to fame and a charmed life that was derailed by tragedy and bitterness – and Sidney manages to hit all the right emotional notes while throwing in some immaculate Scope framing and the odd outstanding setpiece (the Dizzy Fingers number gets a remarkably energetic and imaginative staging). It’s a simple story: boy meets girl, boy becomes overnight success, boy loses girl, boy runs away to war because it helps him lose sight of his personal problems before rediscovering his love of music and, more importantly, of the son he abandoned before fate takes another brutal swing at him. Tyrone Power is certainly too old to still convince as the young man on his way up that studio chiefs still insisted on casting him as in the early scenes, but still manages to more than credibly mime the piano numbers and deliver both the required star quality and some depth to the role (the fact that he only completed three more films before his premature death just two years later adding a piquancy it wouldn’t have had at the time) while Kim Novak is particularly luminous here and gives one of her most impressive performances. And it looks great. |
