Default 3D Hondo?

"Hondo", while owned by the John Wayne estate (headed by Gretchen Wayne), is currently licensed to Paramount for an undetermined period of time. While Paramount has released a DVD and a flat Blu-ray of the film, they have made it quite clear they have no interest in doing a 3D release. That's a bit surprising as a 3D digital master is known to exist. It's even been rumored to have been seen in DCP!

So is Warlock (1959) Blu still on tap for the announced May 21 release date? Three weeks out and I have yet to see a pre-order option on Twilight Time or Screen Archives, or Amazon for that matter.

I was initially going to sit out this sale but I decided to nab "Garden of Evil".

How does everyone feel about Steel Magnolias getting a mass market release? (And probably a better one than TT's.) I'm annoyed for myself, but also happy for the folks that didn't get it yet. Maybe I shouldn't be so quick to pull the trigger on popular TT titles, since they inevitably end up with mass market releases. (I understand the argument that the sales from popular TT titles help fund the release of less popular titles etc. etc. etc.) I'm just venting.

There's been multiple international region free Blus of "Steel Magnolias" for years and you're only now annoyed?

Yes. I'd have to say, yes, I'm only now annoyed. (I rarely buy international.)

No more or less annoyed than I am whenever any bluray gets a re-release or upgrade, etc. I missed out on the TT release of 1984, had to import the German release from MGM, and now there’s a superior Criterion release on its way. It is what it is.

An complete indifference. It's always great that a film is more readily available for others. For as many TT films that get re-released by other labels there are just as many or more films that never would come to BluRay if not for labels like TT.

^^ Well, those are both good attitudes to have, since there will always be more re-releases and upgrades. (No shortage of double and triple dip opportunities in our hobby!)

I'm actually pleased - because it shows that there's still strong enough demand for physical copies of certain titles that the larger studios are willing to release them themselves instead of just banishing them to boutique labels. To me it was always a bit alarming that the boutique labels had a lot of films that were pretty popular (and many Academy Award-winning titles among them) - it's like the major studios were saying there wasn't enough demand for these titles to justify getting involved in releasing them, which is a bit sad.

I'm happy any time a film is available to buy for anybody. But it does make me rethink the urgency on buying a "limited edition" blu-ray.

Personally, I missed out on buying Steel Magnolias when it was available from TT. So I bought a copy at an inflated price on eBay. Of course, had I known somebody else was going to release it, I would have waited.

Considering is sold out in 2014 and has been off the US market since then, the 3 year license expired no later than early 2015, and the fact that nobody re-released in that period says something about the lack of demand for this type title. I bought it $30 in 2012 and have no bad feelings that I overpaid for what I've been able to have for 7 years. Even with the $15-16 German version out in late 2014 I got my money's worth with the TT release

It took 660 day to sell out so it wasn't even that fast. It sold out shortly after the 3rd Birthday Sale (TT First Sale) where is was $19.95 for a few days

Do you think they'll more than 3000 of the new release in 2 years even once it starts having sale prices?

I don't think that there was ever any promise that Twilight Time titles would never get released by someone else after the three year exclusive window expired. I just wish someone would release Bye Bye Birdie now. That's my biggest Twilight Time regret.

I didn't mean to sound like I had bad feelings about buying the TT release, even at a higher than normal price. I'm very happy to have it in my collection, no matter who releases it. I bought my TT copy about 2 years ago off of eBay for $37 and change. I guess I didn't buy it right away because I wasn't sure that I wanted a "soap-opery" kind of movie in my collection. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought it should be in my collection ... maybe for the ensemble cast alone.

I'm not sure if you were asking that last question genuinely or just making a comment ... but to answer the question, I have no idea how to answer that. I was kind of surprised that the TT release sold out as fast as it did.

Now on hi-def Blu-ray: The To Kill a Mockingbird team of producer Alan J. Pakula, director Robert Mulligan, screenwriter Horton Foote and composer Elmer Bernstein reunite for the starkly dramatic tale of a firebrand, would-be rockabilly musician torn asunder by his abusive family past, striving to mend his own self-destructive ways and his fraught relationships with his wife and child. A close-to-the-bone project for Texas native Foote and its hell-for-leather star Steve McQueen that benefits from burnished location lensing and a scorching title tune by Bernstein and Ernie Sheldon.

That specific one doesn't bother me; I think it's a good movie, but I was never remotely tempted by the OOP prices, or even the full TT price, so I don't own it. When they're the same, it doesn't bother me at all. When they're upgrades, it annoys me a little bit, but no moreso than any other double dip upgrade.

A bountiful cast comprised of Hollywood legends and a deep bench of character-actor favorites highlights this woolly Western roundup about an outlaw gang racing to outride the law and a brace of Mexican bandidos in the Southwestern badlands. From the veteran director of McLintock!, The Devil’s Brigade and The Wild Geese comes an outdoor adventure rich in wry humor and thunderous action making its North American Blu-ray debut, complete with a fabulous Jerry Goldsmith score.
