Picked up The Quiller Memorandum in the sale, and watched it tonight. I was sure I'd seen it years ago on TV back in Britain, but didn't remember a thing about it going in or during - so maybe I hadn't.

For the most part I enjoyed it. The Berlin location work is outstanding, and the 'Scope picture looks great. Michael Anderson's direction is solid and unflashy, and along with Harold Pinter's wordy script helps underpin the film's low-key "cerebral" nature; has Nazi-hunting ever been portrayed in a more prosaic way? I found John Barry's score more functional than memorable - but that's only when measured against the lofty heights of much of his other 60's output.

The real issue I had was with George Segal. I found his performance grating, and at times almost inept. He seemed to be aiming for something between the the effortless charm and self-assuredness of Cary Grant, and the sarcastic indifference Michael Caine brought to the role of Harry Palmer - and missing spectacularly on both counts. I don't know much about Segal's other roles and films, but he seemed badly miscast in this one. Thankfully, the supporting talent is much better suited to this kind of work.

Despite reservations about the central performance, it's a film I'm glad to have on BD, and one I'll undoubtedly revisit.

Grrr, placed a big order through TT last week and forgot one title left on my list. But jeez those shipping charges are no joke when its only 1 title!

It sold on eBay for $40 on 1/26, no sales since. The price will come down.

However, I'm not sure that is the same transfer of The Egyptian as the Twilight Time version. I do know there was an absolutely horrible transfer that aired frequently on television until about a year ago, and I'm not at all confident that it wasn't put on foreign blu at some point...

I double-checked, and see that another copy of Love is a Many-Splendored Thing sold for $54 in February, also.

Ah well, I'll keep a running search for it; no great rush to get a copy, it's more of a "someday" thing. I basically want the disc for all the extras!

(It aired on TCM recently, and inexplicably the film was broadcast with monophonic sound. To me, that was a big problem---I love that distinctive sound of 20th Century Fox 1950s four-track stereo.)

I'm not seeing anything at SAE showing less then 50 copies of any individual Blu-ray ASSUMING that the cart stock is accurate. In the past this has been a good approximation, but never 100% reliable

Unfortunately, it looks like they've reverted back to $2 off the entire order as opposed to $2 off per item.

Ah well, money saved is money saved I guess.

After watching The Quiller Memorandum I've been reading more about Senta Berger (no downside to that...). The only other film I have and know her from is the brilliant Cross of Iron, but I'd like to check out more.

For some reason, TT's release of Major Dundee was never on my radar before it went OOP, but I'm tempted now by the recent German release. I read a bit about the film's troubled production and Peckinpah's dissatisfaction with the end result, so I'm wondering if it is worth a blind buy at some point (the TT being simply too expensive). Grateful for any thoughts.

"Major Dundee" is a fine Peckinpah film. It starts off quite strong but I feel the third act is a bit of a drag. The cast is the true highlight of the film.

The German version is absolutely the best version available. It's a digibook with some rare photographs and features a new commentary by Glen Erikson (DVD Savant) In English (!) that meticulously breaks down the changes made between the script, the theatrical version and the restored version. There are other features, bu I haven't been able to go through them all yet.

That makes it less likely that I am going to make an order. I have a coupon sitting in my inbox from December but at the moment to get one title shipping is too high at the moment. Plus after all the recent sales, pre-orders I have next month and the fact I want to take part in the Criterion sale IDK if I will place an order for one title as its just too expensive shipping wise.

Hmmmm, I'll have to think about whether to send another order or not. There are still a number of titles I wouldn't mind having, but only if the price point would drop to $10; not sure I'm willing to pay $15 for a lot of blind buys. I think I already own all my must-haves from the list.

It sounds like to me if you still have a coupon they will honor it.

They just won't be giving out coupons moving forward for written reviews.
