I placed an order from Twilight Time last Thursday afternoon. It shipped Thursday night, and arrived this morning. My order arrived in a sturdy box, with padding. I'd call that "perfect."

The Chairman (aka The Most Dangerous Man in the World) starts off with an amazing photomontage title sequence by Paul Brown Constable dealing with overpopulation and the rise of the Red Guard in Mao’s China accompanied by the increasingly strident tones of Jerry Goldsmith’s superb score that sets the scene for a much better film than you get. Any hope of a serious political thriller is quickly lost as soon as Arthur Hill’s cycloptic general turns up and it turns out the bug implanted in Gregory Peck’s skull is also a bomb. What you get instead is a fairly glossy, fashionably cynical shot-on-location thriller that briefly touches on humanistic issues in a couple of scenes – the best of them a literal and ideological ping pong game with Conrad Yama’s Chairman Mao - before getting back to the spy stuff that’s neither James Bond nor John Le Carre but pure Hollywood hokum in the 60s mould. Ironically, although the producers harboured the notion of filming in China in a monumental fit of delusion, it was the Hong Kong and Taiwanese authorities that really objected to the subject matter (as either too defamatory or deferential to Mao as the prevailing mood would have it), with the film ending up in the same Welsh locations that had passed for China in The Inn of the Sixth Happiness and Satan Never Sleeps.

J. Lee Thompson’s direction is occasionally visually ambitious, but seems to have suffered in the editing, with several very obvious edits to alternate takes interrupting what were clearly intended as continuous camera moves, though he manages to get a surprising amount of tension out of the last couple of reels as Peck makes his unlikely action-packed dash for the Russian border (this being a combined US-UK-Russian operation). It’s a shame that, like Fox’s DVD, this is the US version (as are all worldwide home video releases), relegating the slightly racier scenes to the extra features – who’d have thought there’d ever be a movie with Gregory Peck having his trousers undone by a naked woman on her knees?

It’s attained some historical interest in the past decade or so, and not just because of the scenes in a down and dirty Hong Kong before it was a neon city of skyscrapers or the presence of the industry’s then go-to Asian actors Keye Luke, Burt Kwouk (who is very obviously dubbed by Bond movie voiceover regular Robert Rietty but does get his big machine-gun toting grenade throwing action hero moment in this one), Ric Young and Anthony Chinn. With the Chinese box-office such an important part of Hollywood’s financial calculations, it’s simply inconceivable today that, even with the Chinese government carrying out genocidal policies against the Muslim population in Xinjiang, any major studio, or even a moderately well-funded independent, would make a film where the Red Chinese are clearly the villains and the ruthlessness of their political system openly criticised today.

With Disney apparently stopping all work on restoring Fox titles for the time being, the disc appears to use the same older transfer Fox used for their DVD, but there is a noticeable improvement in the quality – good enough to notice that the lovely Zienia Merton is wearing a body stocking in part of her deleted nude scene - and no ‘reimagining’ of the original colour scheme. TT have carried over the extras package from Fox’s special edition DVD – audio commentary by Eddie Friedfeld and Lee Pfeiffer, two racier deleted scenes from the international version (one explaining what the butterflies are doing in the bedroom scene), trailer (unfortunately with sound out of synch by a whopping 80 seconds!) and what is referred to as a 17-minute mini-movie but which is actually a show reel put together for exhibitors to get them to book the film and which features alternate takes and one additional deleted scene but which, unfortunately, is also slightly out of synch: so is the version on the DVD release, but not as noticeably. (It’s surprising Fox didn’t use this as the basis for a Super 8mm release in the 70s since other show reels like the 1979 Dracula, Buck Rogers or Capricorn One turned up on the format). Like the trailer, this seems to be the only instance of Nick Redman’s passing affecting a TT disc: he supervised the extra content, and as this was one of the label’s last releases it’s sadly understandable that the label’s quality control on the supplements dipped on this occasion. They’ve also added an isolated music and effects track for Goldsmith’s superb score - the original master tracks have long been lost or mislaid - and the usual booklet.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this on a rewatch, but then it seems to be one of those films I blow hot and cold on depending on what kind of mood I'm in: I enjoyed it as a kid, was disappointed when I saw it again on DVD but found the hokum much more engaging this time. Your mileage may vary.

Incidentally, how's this wonderfully tacky Scanners-inspired UK VHS cover for taking the premise rather more literally than anything on screen?:

I almost bought this but the user reviews at IMDB really savaged it and discouraged me from getting it; perhaps due to the troubled production you describe.

Does Twilight Time ship from their headquarters in Auburn, Washington, or is their distributor located elsewhere? If they ship from Auburn, I expect to receive mine in a day or two as I'm only a stone's throw away. I've never ordered directly from their website before.

Not a detailed list adn certainly not complete, but here are the items I have with major UK companies.

A lot of the Fr and DE discs are so bad, very old transfer, wrong speed, force subs that I ignore most of them and honestly don't consider them a real alternative. There are a handful of good AUS alternatives and a couple handful of Japan/HK versions that are good.

One I'd like to hear more people get an evaluated in the 2019 JAPAN release of Egyptian. There is so much conflicting information about that title -- is it 1080i or not, which soundtrack in included, is it the TT or other Old Transfer. The one person who had it in hand only posts a couple brief messages about it. It's not super expensive, but like many Japanese releases it's not cheap either.

They're probably the ones that have been waiting for the titles to drop to $5 since the inception of TT.

Alright, that's that. . .

HARRY AND WALTER GO TO NEW YORK
MORITURI
MY COUSIN RACHEL
NO DOWN PAYMENT
THE GANG'S ALL HERE
HILDA CRANE
MELVIN AND HOWARD

Wanted to give priority to Fox titles, even ones I only had a passing interest in. This is the time to do it, in my opinion.

I just looked thru my list, and here's my top 10 TT titles:
Bananas
The Big Heat
Bye Bye Birdie
Emperor Of The North
Hardcore
House Of Bamboo
Kiss Of Death
Mysterious Island
Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines
To Sir With Love

Thanks again TT, you will be missed!

TWILIGHT TIME went where no man has gone before with their choices and I for one worship their eclecticism. Cinephiling isn’t just about trying to replicate a NYU class at home, it’s every bit as much about watching THE ADVENTURES OF HAJJI BABA while cozying a couch on a cold, snowy afternoon.

Both TWILIGHT TIME and KINO understand that. The more we lose the “curiosities and middle of the road type movies” the more we lose parts of our history and culture and ourselves.
That is what appeals to me about Twilight Time and Kino, the high of discovering a new title blind. If not for blind buys, my film outlook would be very limited instead of across many genres. While I was late to getting my first Twilight Time film in June 2017(To Sir With Love) only have 25 releases(26 films, and just 5 of them were buys at full price) I was super happy for what they offered and brought to the die hard cinema fan with new discoveries. They really opened my eyes to the Fox film library of the late 40s though the 1950s, film-noir, and the work of Samuel Fuller. I probably would've never bought the Eureka Fuller set had I never bought Underworld USA and The Crimson Kimono. Hope to be able to place another last order or orders at the beginning of the month, so crossing my fingers that the titles I want will still be in stock at TT or SAE.

My top 10 favorite TTs would probably have to be this:
1. Peyton Place (it was how I stumbled upon TT in the first place looking for a Blu and it's the best soap opera epic ever)
2. The Train (one of my first TT purchases and one of my favorite action films)
3. The Boston Strangler (the cinematography, editing, and Tony Curtis are fantastic)
4. House of Bamboo (my introduction to Fuller)
5. Two For the Road (Mancini's score is lovely and so is Hepburn)
6. Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (such a hauntingly beautiful score by De Vol)
7. The Gang's All Here (wonderfully underrated musical with an excellent big band jazz score)
8. Garden of Evil (great atmospheric western with some on-location scenery CinemaScope goodness with an equally atmospheric Hermann score to boot)
9. The Seven-Ups (solid 70s cop-thriller with a high-octane car chase)
10. In Like Flint (just hook that 60s aesthetic and Jerry Goldsmith score to my vains)

Good times.
Who could forget, a lot of people weren't in favor of it though. I do wish they would have released it though and at least if would have been put out on disc.

- Dragonwyck
- Alamo Bay
- Jackie Chan DF
- Theatre of Blood
- Inferno
- Rollerball
- Resurrected
- 8 Heads in a Duffle Bag
- Black Widow ('87)
- Zelig
- Rapid Fire
- Geronimo: An American Legend (Bought this one due to some recommendations in this thread, thanks!)
- Don't Bother to Knock
- A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy
- Angel
- Bananas
- Bedazzled
- Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
- Doll of Satan
- Morituri
- The Snake Pit
- Stagecoach
- Stardust Memories
- Talk Radio
- Warlock
- Whirlpool
- Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?

This is by far one of the largest hauls I've made. I hope I made some good choices!
Wow, with all of those being blind buys, you made some truly great choices! You have some incredible movie-watching experiences ahead of you! There are some classics on that list, such as the intense, dark, unforgettable "Talk Radio," and the Woody Allen titles, and some of the 1940s-50 films!

Also, I'm particularly glad that TT released 1972's under-seen, and very powerful and moving, "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds." That film features Joanne Woodward in a great, utterly wrenching role as an alcoholic mother, but director Paul Newman's and Joanne's young daughter steals the movie in a performance that will stay with me for the rest of my life. It's a film to watch very closely-- little details are so important, and they all add up to a finale that I would never want to spoil for you. You just have to experience it for yourself. Such an emotional, and yet also cerebral, in some ways, movie. Very intelligent and very heartfelt.

My shipment originated from Carrollton, Texas. I'm not sure if that's their main distribution center; most of my orders in the past have come from SAE.

The old dvd of Picnic was barely adequate on a CRT tv. Possible that Sony/Columbia puts out a blu-ray. Some international Sony blu-rays are actually region free. Is there a Japanese release, those are region A. The Way We Were is available in European editions region free. If Sony/Columbia isn't going to put out a Redford/Streisand picture then don't get your hopes up for Picnic.
Sombody has copies of the Twilight Picnic on ebay for only about $70US plus shipping. That's pretty good - the Twilight "Way We Were" & other Streisand titles usually are more than that.
Have you ever actually seen Picnic? Is it a favorite film? If not maybe not worth a blind buy. It's a pretty lousy melodrama & Kim Novak couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.
