I don't think so - I tried using the coupon code again and the discount was applied during checkout.

Been hoping that someday The Missouri Breaks (1976) would make it to blu ray. I wonder if TT would be able to put it out now that they have a deal in place with MGM.

NixPix - Some people ask about the limited edition of 3000. Is this an arbitrary figure?

Nick Redman - “Well, I can tell you it has nothing to do with artist’s residuals as it often has been incorrectly suggested on websites.
So there was absolutely nothing to all those 'magazine rate' lectures that were delivered over the past three years.

Whodathunkit.

Very sad. I think at this point we should embrace Twilight Time even though we all may not agree with the pricing or limited quantities. The writing is on the wall regarding the studios quickly losing interest in catalog titles. We may never see any older films on Blu ray if it werent for TT, Shout, Criterion, Olive, Cohen Media, Kino, Mill Creek etc. They may be the only ones releasing anything pretty soon.

I obviously have no way of measuring this in any dollars and cents sort of way but I wouldn't be at all surprised if studios are devoting more resources today to the restoration and preservation of their catalog titles than ever before.

Now, do studios have much interest in handling all the nuts and bolts of packaging and distributing physical discs? No, they don't really appear to but so what?

Do we really care whether Paramount directly distributes their Republic library or farms it out to Olive? Do we really care whether Paramount prints another run of Zodiac or pays Warner to do it for them?

As long as we're getting quality catalog releases - and we've been getting more and more of them every year - then do we really need to tear our hair out over how the sausage is made and exactly who is making it?

I think people just pull out their hair when the sausage is limited.

That's totally reasonable. Criticising labels like Olive or Kino for omitting SDH subs is also reasonable. Grousing about the price of this label or that can even be reasonable (it does get silly at times but it can be reasonable).

But looking at the catalog market and seeing the glass as half-empy and getting emptier every day doesn't seem all that reasonable to me. The catalog market is thriving.

We're seeing more and more catalog releases from more and more outlets. This is a Good Thing overall even if we have legitimate complaints about some aspects of this outlet or that.

Now I really want all the babies to just zip it. Sick of people whining over sell outs and prices. I'm glad this Interview was done. The BLU ray market is hard. I agree with Nick, no offense to WB but their celebratory 90th year and they haven't given classic film l lovers much. Yes I love what they release but where are more classic noirs, we got 4 gangster films another OZ set and another Exorcist.

I myself have been a buyer from SAE and film score collecting for many years, I love collecting the TT titles on BLU. I hope I can try to keep up with their output.

I really hate how downloading etc has hurt physical media.

Actually, I was just saying it was sad because studios don't really care about their titles anymore. I know it's a money thing, but I'm a consumer. I could care less about the business end of things. I'm glad we have Twilight Time, Criterion, Shout/Scream Factory. I hope more labels spring up like them, and I hope over time the ones not allowed/don't do special features start to do them. The studios obviously don't like special features, as stated in the interview. I love them. I like learning how a film was put together and its troubles. I'm sad consumers don't think older movies are worth owning (most of my friends just use Netflix for older titles now) or preserving. I hope one day Twilight Time grows enough to do special features. Criterion and Shout already do that quite well. I kind of hope Olive goes away though, as they charge about as much as TT, but don't offer any special features usually, and I'm not a fan of their transfers either.

I have no issue with spending 30+ on TT titles. If it means having a title opposed to not having it there is no question about how "worth it" it is to me. When I read people saying "I''ll wait..." all I can this is "for what?" If you want it then you should just get it.

I do not think that once studios abandon catalog titles they are no longer going to be released. TT is on its way to building a successful business, Criterion sales seem steady and Shout Factory has even indicated how happy they are with sales. The future of physical media will fall into the hands of the independents like these and others.

TT indicated on Facebook that the MGM/UA titles will be 2 a month plus the additional Sony and Fox titles. In 2014 they could be releasing as many as 5 titles a month.

I understand where that comes from but I don't think it's entirely fair.

Sony (rightly) gets criticized for sitting on their catalog library. But can one really argue that they don't care about those titles? By all indications Sony has been a very responsible caretaker of their catalog library. They put a lot of resources into their HD transfers of Fright Night and The Big Heat (and Anatomy of a Murder and On the Waterfront) just to name a few.

You can say a lot of things about Sony but 'they don't care about their titles' really isn't one of them. And I think this is more or less true across the board. Fox, Warner, MGM, Paramount, Universal (yes, even Universal)...they all seem to be taking their catalog libraries very seriously.

That doesn't always translate into direct BD releases but that's only one yardstick and it's not necessarily one of the more accurate ones.

Are you similarly baffled when people say they'll wait until Black Friday or they'll wait for a Barnes & Noble Criterion sale?

I agree that Sony cares about their titles. Even the Mill Creek $5 releases look quite good. The Twilight Time release of Hard Times is perfect. I have no issue on who releases them because I am rarely disappointed.

Yeah, I have a Black Friday list also.

Everyone forgets that for the past 2 years Criterion has had a 50% off sale in September. I'm hoping this year is the same, I've held off on pre-orderin La Cage, Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Autumn Sonata just in case.

Sure, Sony may be good at archiving. I don't mind that they let other companies release their titles either. However, I was kind of hoping for blu-ray releases of the Godzilla movies they have the distribution rights to (Toho would never allow them to sell those off to another company to release.), or for Ghostbusters II with special features, or at least a commentary. I'm thankful for Twilight Time. I've bought Fright Night, Roots of Heaven, Mysterious Island, The Fury, and Christine. I'm definitely getting Golden Voyage of Sinbad and Sinbad & the Eye of the Tiger on pre-order day later this year. I think they do a great job, and I don't mind the 30 dollar price. If it's important enough to you, you find the money. They don't care about making their titles available for owning, though. In fact, sadly, if these boutiques fail after a while, I'm almost certain that studios will move away from selling films to us, and go all to a netflix type model where films will be available only for viewing, not for buying.

And yes, I get what you're saying about studios spending a lot of money on archiving and preservation. However, as I said, we're moving away from the special features environment of the last 15 years and moving towards films on their own. This will not upset most, but as someone that loves to study film, it does sadden me. Especially when these studios won't allow Twilight Time to release new commentaries. (I know they aren't interested in making documentaries.) Also, there's a company out there that is just sitting on films not letting them go to boutique labels and not releasing them either.... Lionsgate. Warner Bros. does this too, but at least they still release catalog titles.
