Journey ... made my list because of my anticipation for the movie when its release was first announced ... not based on its technical merits.

And yes, I will be buying the 4K restoration. It's too classic! (to me anyway).

(Also, I should add that I kind of lied about not having any blind buys in my list. I was very excited when the release of Thunderbirds Are Go / Thunderbird 6 was announced because I was familiar with Gerry Anderson's TV work ... but I didn't actually see those movies before I bought them.)

Just as a note of curiousity, the Sony 4K Unlimited server has a few TT releases available for rent ($7.99) or purchase ($29.99). Body Double of course is sold out, but I wouldn't want that movie anyway, even as a rental.

I am puzzled as to why these Harryhausen classics have yet to be seen on Blu-ray. With the sellout of TT's "Mysterious Island", I would have thought Sony would step in and market the title themselves.

Warner Archive Collection has a dozen Blu-rays via MOD. (Looks like #13 will be the Robert Mitchum film noir classic "Out of the Past".) If Sony is hesitant about mega-releases, they might do well adopting the BD-MOD strategy to keep titles available. At least that way we would have direct access to classic titles.

Slight correction. Warner Archive's Blu-rays aren't MOD. They are pressed, just like commercial Blu-rays, but in relatively small batches. I wouldn't be surprised if their press runs were smaller than Twilight Time's.

That's great news. I also heard a rumor that they were releasing MISSISSIPPI BURNING. That would also be great.

I had two orders, one with the free Brannigan and one without. My second one without Brannigan has shipped so far, and that was placed eight days later.

Beginning of the new century we licensed a package of Hammer films for the first time, being convinced that the name “Hammer” is a brand recognized by lots of people and their iconic monsters a valid selling point. We released those films on DVD for the (back then) very decent price of 15,00 EUR, stuffed with bonus material and basically available in every store. Our distributor even managed to have most of the shops create a special Hammer section. Despite lots of advertising and amazing reviews in the press, most of the 20 titles did not sell more than roughly 2500 copies. Even worse, a box set in which we packed the first 5 titles (as they were otherwise available as single editions) for a much reduced price didn’t even sell 100 copies. Leaving us with a loss of nearly a 6-figure sum.
Wow. If that doesn't tell you that "limited edition" as a marketing device is the way of the future I'm not sure what will: in a country of 80mil they couldn't sell 2500 per title for HAMMER horror at a decent price. It makes me believe that the "under 10000 sales" in the US is more fact than fiction for catalog. What a depressing percent of the overall pop.

I wonder what those Hammer editions sold through today, though. The "limited edition" thing gets you to buy stuff you might normally put off and get someday in a sale. I have a wishlist on Amazon of 100+ releases I want to get "someday," but if I knew any of them might disappear tomorrow I would get it immediately. That's why the limited edition thing works.

It also screws over fans for not paying attention all the time though. When Christine came out from Twilight Time I was teaching English in Russia. Buying blu rays wasn't exactly at the top of my to-do list. Now I'm screwed, unless they re-release it.

Read more of his quote: pricing low screwed them over. So now it's apparent that TT has pushed the price point hi because that's where the sweet spot is, and even then it isn't all that great.

I think what companies like TT should do for each release is do a poll (here and over social media sites) and ask if XXXX title was to be released on BD would you:

A. possibly buy it
B. put it on a list to buy later
C. definitely buy it

Run the poll for a specific amount of time (like 1 or 2 weeks) then based on the results, release XXXX number of copies. So, if only 500 respond then do a limitation of 500. If 5000 respond then raise it up to 5000. This way, you get a good idea of certain sales and most hard core fans should be aware of what's going on and participate in the polls. E-mails/text alerts can be sent out for each new poll.

This plan would mostly eliminate the problem of whether 3000 is too much or not enough.

Just an idea.

if it truly is the "way of the future" then I honestly see film going the way of the high end collector only. the average person will pretty much only see new blockbusters and the rest of film will be scavenged by resellers and wildly OCD collectors who are similar to the "crazies" on animenewsnetwork.

I just posted this on TT's Facebook page. Hinting about needing it in the U.S. They indicated "It will be coming...."

Physical media is going to end up that way eventually no matter what. It's going to be just like laserdisc was.

I'm not going to bring up an side argument in this thread, but lets say that there's multiple viewpoints on that

especially since the U.S. is the only nation that's really on the streaming bandwagon and the only reason people stream is because it's DIIIIIIIIIIIRT cheap. the minute that advantage goes away it'll be dropped like hot potato

I doubt the opposite. Streaming media is ONLY really prevalent in the U.S. and we have the WEAKEST internet backbone of the modern 1st world nations. over 30% of ALL traffic on the net is netflix alone. and look at their tiny qunatity of titles? if the whole nation went streaming it would literally collapse the entire network infrastructure in one point. that's why the ISPs are SALIVATING at putting caps on the internet. look at nations that have caps. they are the ones like Canada, Australia etc who have the LOWEST amount of people streaming (streaming is nice if you think you're paying $8 a month for lots of titles, but when you come home to a $300 net bill because you're over your limit it starts to add up and you have to watch your downloading like a hawk. look at Canada, many of them have a 60 gig cap and end up going over just by youtube and online gaming. think what would happen if the only way to watch movies was online. getting a $300 bill a month would be STANDARD). streaming is being pushed on us, and it's on a shaky bed of coals... that's just ONE reason. there's a myriad of others.
