I don't like spending $35 for catalog blu ray titles but I make the exception for movies that I "love" vs like--

I spent the bucks on FRIGHT NIGHT, ROLLERBALL, and HARD TIMES as they are favorites...

I'm skipping LOVE AND DEATH, FIRST MEN IN THE MOON and many others in the past which I'd very much like to have but they're not priorities....

For the past year or so, I've been spending most of my dollars on Criterion releases. But the upcoming release of Journey to the Center of the Earth in 4K (and specifically, my memories of how wonderful Bernard Herrmann's score sounded on my old LaserDisc) prompted me to place an order with Twilight Time. In addition to Journey, I picked up two cherished titles I've been wanting to upgrade for a while (Man Hunt and Breaking Away), and two that I haven't seen in years and have never owned on video (Equus and Yentl). The latter two are packed with Special Features, which made them particularly appealing to me.

You're right. I was looking at the post before mine which had Czechoslovakia in it, and so I had Czechoslovakia on my mind.

Most of you obviously did not collect laserdiscs. Fox would charge $60. for discs and would get away with it. And the Criterion CAV Special Editions would be at least $100.00. Most discs from the Studios would run between $35. and $40. Warner had some bargain discs for $25. I remember really having to budget and save during that time because walking into Tower Records and plopping down that much cash in one shot was impossible.

Sometimes the films were Pan/Scan or FF Open Matte. Criterion was almost always the only option for Widescreen titles. Examples including 2001:A Space Odyssey that MGM initially released PAN/SCAN. It was not until years later after the Criterion had released both CAV and CLV versions that MGM did. The studios went back later and re-issued many titles in Widescreen.

Yes, considering you can get catalogs in a dump bin for $7.99 by today's standard $35 is high. But those are only what the studios have offered. TT is offering pretty much the one and only opportunity to buy these films on Blu ray. So if you choose not to pay $35 for them you will just miss out. This is it, there are not going to be many options for these films on disc beyond Blu ray. Paying $35 may not be that bad of a deal considering the other option could be double if the disc sells out and goes OOP.

We have almost returned to the niche factor of the Criterion and Laserdiscs days. Studios do not care, which is why Criterion has picked up more studio titles than they were able to during the height of DVD. It is also why Twilight Time is thriving.

"Twilight Time
March 5
UPDATE for the March releases -- hi all, just a heads-up we have been advised by our East Coast-based replicators, Cinram, that owing to inclement weather conditions shipments of the new titles to SAE may be delayed, so consequently SAE's shipping dates to consumers will be pushed back. SAE will likely receive the new releases on a "staggered" basis, so consumers who have only ordered one or two titles will get theirs sent first - those that ordered all will be held up till everything is in. An additional note: Since THE BOUNTY required extensive music and audio restoration, it will be running approximately one week behind the others. Thanks."

Screen Archives is a piece of work...people who only order one movie, will get theirs before those who ordered 3-4? With those who order 3-4 being delayed days if not weeks??

Isn't that kind of backwards considering how much they charge for shipping? There is no free shipping or overnight shipping...seems like they would ship as received even if they had to eat the cost for more than one shipment.

Screen Archives seems to think they're the only game in town and they can treat customers anyway they want...

For the record, I either own or have on order a total of 31 Twilight Time titles so I'm not cranky about one poor Screen Archives customer service experience, I love Twilight Time product.

TCM alway shipped my TT movies as they got them in. Sometimes even 3 different shipments for one order (which were almost always bought on sale). They catch a lot of flak on these boards but this is one thing they do right.

Just to add some perspective......do you put those discs in your player and watch them right away? Or do some sit on the shelf for days or a week or more before you get around to them? If you are like most people ordering two to three at a time, it will be the latter. Frankly, I don't see a difference in whether I get a week delay or it sits unwatched on my shelf for a week. I prefer getting everything shipped together as long as the delay waiting on a title doesn't become excessive (say, a month or more). SAE is in my opinion the best outfit around when it comes to boxing and packaging. My preference if I order multiple titles is a box with everything in it and not an order arriving separately in baggies and envelopes.

And for the post you responded to, the weather is bad enough to have shut down the Cinram plant and have the employees be sent home for their own travel safety. I don't live on the east coast. My weather is fine, if a bit cold for this time of year on the Texas Gulf Coast. Since you are in Connecticut, you have only to look out your window. The point is that the titles will be arriving late and on a staggered basis due to weather and SAE will ship orders based on what title shows up when. Smaller orders with titles in hand will go first. Makes sense to me.

The German Tiger I tanks in the movie are actually modified Soviet tanks that were used in an earlier Yugoslavia movie (the Tiger I in FURY is the real thing---it's the only operating Tiger I in existence).

KELLY'S HEROES trivia:
1. The SS officer that Clint Eastwood guns down down as they begin their attack to seize the gold in the bank is Yves Montand in an uncredited cameo.
2. John Landis, then a production assistant on the movie, played one of the nuns.
3. The script was written by Troy Kennedy Martin---who also wrote the original THE ITALIAN JOB.
4. The movie reunited Clint Eastwood with director Brian G. Hutton who directed Eastwood and Richard Burton in WHERE EAGLES DARE. Another cast member of WHERE EAGLES DARE, Ingrid Pitt (of Hammer Films vampiress fame), was supposed to be the love interest in KELLY'S HEROES, but her role was deleted just as she was about to fly to Yugoslovaia for filming.
5. Perry Lopez also co-starred in CHINATOWN, but played one of the natives killed at the beginning of THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (he appeared under a different name).
Additionally it was while watching a funeral at a crossroads that John Landis came up with the idea for An American werewolf in London.

Eastwood always used to cite it as one of his biggest disappointments because the original script and, to a lesser extent, the original cut were much more of a black anti-war comedy before the studio re-edited it to make it more of an action film: "It had the best script, a good cast, a subtle anti-war message, elements that would possibly make a ground-breaking movie."

Personally I don't care if there is a delay as long as I get it, I'm not that hard up and have plenty to watch until they finally arrive, theres always TCM shop, they carry TT titles as well. I love all the TT titles I have ordered, and it's just one small inconvenience that I have learned to live with, in order to get them.

I remember those LaserDisc prices very clearly. I paid $69.95 (full MSRP) for my copy of Fox's The Egyptian, and thought I was getting a great bargain because old 16mm and 35mm copies were selling on the black market for hundreds of dollars.

But the laserdisc manufacturing cost per disc was much higher. Here's an article from the LA Times, circa 2000, which states the cost per laserdisc was around $8, or $14 if the movie was longer than 2 hours, (toward the end of the laserdisc lifecycle) where as the cost of a DVD was $2 (toward the beginning of the DVD lifecycle).

I get that, but if its something you truly love, then you find a way to get it. I mean, someone complaining about a $30 blu will easily spend $15 to get two movies they might not love as much, but they're still spending the same amount. It's like anything - if you want it bad enough, then you save up for it or find a way to get it. If not, then you really don't want it that badly.

Again, not trying to be rude or presume anything on others' behalf, just saying. The problem is that people often put prices on things you can't put a price on. Personally, I'd rather have 1 film I love than 2 I don't love as much. It's all a matter of priorities. And yes, I was one who would regularly spend $100 for Criterion laserdiscs back in the early 90s. Did I have the money? Not really. But I saved up or sacrificed other things so I could get what I wanted.

I don't think you're understanding what they wrote. What they're saying is that they'll ship the titles as they receive them. If the titles are coming in staggered as opposed to all at once, how do you expect them to ship titles that they don't have yet? Would you rather them hold up everyone's order until all of the titles arrive and then start shipping them just so they can ship to those who ordered multiple titles first?! Man, people really will complain about anything...

And we are heading toward these days again. With streaming taking over physical media is going to be more and more niche, which means higher and higher prices. It's time to decide how much you want to collect movies, and how much you're willing to pay for your favorites.

I'd pay quite a lot for my absolute favorite films on disc, and a good bit for anything right in my collector wheelhouse (sci-fi classics post-color and 80's cheese). Am I going to pay $35 for Sleepless in Seattle though? No.
