Just watched Under Fire and it was still very good. It really does a great job of throwing you into the civil unrest of Nicaragua and the leads are all very well written and acted and it's very tense throughout. Gene Hackman in particular is great and brings a lot of humanity (and humility) to what easily could have been a simple antagonist. Joanna Cassidy gives another very tough, no-nonsense performance and is always convincing and never used as a woman in peril. The action is also staged very convincingly. None of the fight scenes appear to have any special effects, it's all very realistic, nothing to pull you out of it at any point like the rotoscoped blood in The Killing Fields. The whole thing looks like it really was filmed in a revolution.

I'd only seen this on TV about 20 years ago, and I still remembered a lot of scenes vividly. It really sticks in your mind and portrays a lot of nasty events in an appropriately journalistic fashion. It's sort of a hard movie to recommend since I'm not sure what other movies to compare it to. My memories of "The Year of Living Dangerously" would put it remotely in the same ballpark, as would sections of The Killing Fields and Last King of Scotland. It's pretty unique as far as movies that I've seen, and it's executed almost flawlessly. More people should check it out while it's cheap!

The interview with Joanna Cassidy (evidently done by Walter from Scorpion?) was disappointingly short, but what can you do. :P

I'm tempted to get Falcon and the Snowman for another low-key 80s action/thriller with Pat Metheny on the soundtrack since it's on sale at the moment, but I know that one doesn't have as good of a rep, plus hopefully it will be on sale more than once a year since it's not TT.

@docc : This post will make you feel better :

" I know this isn't going to help anyone, but possibly help people to chill about their order and the waiting. I have been ordering TT releases from SAE basically since they launched. At first, when there were not many orders, your order shipped almost the next day and pre-orders were on your doorstep release day. Over the years, TT has become much more popular and SAE, which is the company that fills the orders, not TT, seems to have slowed significantly in the processing of orders. Lately if you order any item that is in-stock, it takes about 4-5 business days for them to ship it. Considering there is a big sale, in some cases, that number may double. It's only been 6 business days since the sale went live. The sale is barely a week old, so there are going to be some orders that may not ship till next week. This is VERY NORMAL for SAE. Their queue also does not seem to prioritize orders that were placed when the sale went live. Their system can ship an order placed yesterday, before one placed last Friday. I don't know why, but this is normal for them. I will say one thing and I assume many that have ordered from SAE will agree. You WILL get your order and it will be packaged well too. The shipping is slow, but patience will pay off and you will get your beloved TT titles. I have ordered 25 times or so from them and have NEVER not received my order. My last order took 3 weeks to receive AFTER release date, so I feel the pain, but I did get my order and all was well. Be patient...

By the way, none of their orders need to be signed for, so they will be left in your mailbox. I have ordered $200 worth of stuff from them several times and they do not require a signature, so have someone around or have a friend pick it up if you are worried.. "

Last summer I found Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines at a Vintage Stock store for about $20. Otherwise, I have found a few good, cheap deals on eBay.

Got my order of The Mechanic and Sleepless in Seattle in today. Sleepless in Seattle has probably my favorite Julie Kirgo essay inside. Very on-point and insightful. Love that she calls the 90's a "cultural swamp."

Thank you! Especially knowing that you didn't get lost in the shuffle and that orders at the front of the queue aren't necessarily processed right away makes it easier

I just ordered three of these. Journey to the Center of the Earth, Bell, Book, and Candle, and Sleepless in Seattle. It's cool that someone is releasing some under-appreciated films. Sleepless in Seattle is weird though because I thought for sure Sony would have done a Blu of their own since it is a hit film for them.

I rented this the other night to see if this was one I wanted to order from TT, especially knowing they were on the verge of it selling out for good. While I mostly enjoyed it, it really wasn't my cup of tea for the most part. I actually found the William Holden character a little annoying, and the interactions between the characters on the odd or offbeat side. I think my favorite characters were Kim Novak's little sister, the old lady next door neighbor and Rosalind Russell's boyfriend (Arthur O'Connell). I don't think I have any wish to see it again. But that's not to say it won't be a movie that others will enjoy, as indeed it's a very highly thought of film.
