Slated for May 23rd.. Although I have no plans for a 4K TV (untill my Sony dies on me) the fact that we'll finally get a proper Blu-Ray release of the film will make me buy the UHD package.. Forward thinking....

And so it begins: The first title I have on a wonderful Warner Digibook getting announced for UHD BD. Pulled the Unforgiven Digi off the shelf--delicious presentation (of a serviceable disc). My perspective on this will likely shift over the next, say, 18 months or so as we get a better sense of just how much catalog is going to see the light of UHD BD day. But for now I think that nice Digi is worth more to me to keep than I'd make in selling it.

Just put the UHD disc in the Digibook! I've done it with a few of my UHD upgrades.

And then do what with the UHD BD packaging? And have a mismatch between 1080 BD packaging and UHD BD disc which is less likely to sell once the William Munny Commemorative Holographic 8K Edition is released?

Clearly we worship at different houses of Anal Retention.

exactly my thoughts. mixing discs and packaging around so early on into 4k is a big no no

everything 4k goes on the 4k shelf

Pffft, I've already made several custom 4K combos to include the bonus disc (Pacific Rim and Man of Steel), and not only have I done that with Star Trek Beyond I've also put the UHD case into the slipcase for the retailer exclusive Blu-ray version. I've also put the UHD of Goodfellas inside the slipcase for the 25th anniversary BD with booklet & letter and sold the BD off.

I sold my Blu-ray of The Revenant once I got the UHD, but kept the Blu-ray slip for the UHD case.

Oh, don't get it twisted: I've done my share of such 'bastardizing.' I liked the DVD re-release Digibook of Cast Away so much and was so frustrated at the absence of the disc 2 supplements of that SE DVD release from the BD that I sold that movie DVD disc a la carte and put the BD from the "Own the Moments" two-fer of Cast and Master and Commander in the DVD Digi.

But such dancing with others than the one who brung ya' is based upon a lot of collateral market factors: it became obvious that Fox was/is not going to re-release some of their movie-only BD titles with the 2-disc SE DVD's supps (except de Lauzirika's work on KOH); and 5-8 years ago there was more of an aftermarket for DVDs--it's harder to make any money from selling BDs much less DVDs now; and, as DJJez intimates, it's early in the life of the UHD format for me to be doing aggressive swingin'. YMMV.

I put the leftover movie Blu of Beyond in a blank case with the BD slipcover and sold it for a tenner. Job done. Not calling out anyone specifically here, but it seems to me that folks can get hung up on clawing back every last penny when they sell their odds and ends, whereas I see a few quid in my skyrocket better than some old disc cluttering up my shelf (considering I've currently got well over 1100 Blus and UHDs, I've sold on many hundreds more over the years).

As for me and mah swingin', this may well be the last physical media format so even a stripped-out version (I do like selling the 3D discs out of the Sony packages, for example) will still command a decent resale value in the years to come so I'm happy to bastardise them.

I make tons of custom sets. I have tons of US discs inside Arrow UK cases for example. I'm definitely putting this sucker in my Digibook (and maybe gluing a paper sleeve inside for the BD!).

Smile when you type that, Alex.

You seemingly have not spent much/any time in the thread in which guys discuss adding photos to their Steelbooks that came sans interior artwork, where to order such photos, how to remove the plastic liner in order to install such photos and posting pictures of the results of these important endeavors.

Speaking of Warner catalogs with serviceable transfers and lossy audio that I hope hit 4k UHD BD which I already have in specialty packaging on 1080 BD: The Last Samurai!

Re "last physical media format": Are you referring to 4k UHD BD in particular or the BD format in general regardless of rez? Or does the distinction not make much difference in terms of the point you're making?

FWIW in my experience on the resale market, the notion that BD is the last whistle stop on the packaged media train is less significant than the market niche. Used pricing for 2D 1080 BDs of most Hollywood fare has fallen through the floor. But 3D pricing still hovers around $20 used, at least on Amazon Marketplace in the US. Disney combos are even more. I suspect the same thing will happen with 4k UHD. Those prices (will continue to?) remain higher because it's a smaller, niche-within-niche market that buys them.

No, when 4K was being discussed speculation was that would be the last.

And it more than likely is since streaming can only continue to gain momentum.

I think disc media will last a long time as a niche market, but I can't see any reason to do another format. 8k res is pretty meaningless for movies at the moment and 12-bit color won't sell a format. I guess this could change though, and native 8k movies could become a thing, but by then I feel like discs actually will be dead.

This is great news! Since it should be fully remastered 4K, I may as well sell the current BD I have. Because it has the same features.
