Thanks for sharing this. I bought a Harmony remote to try this and confirm it also works for the 2017 OLED models. Turned off ASBL via the TCP disable from the "in-start" menu and can confirm that the TV doesn't auto-dim anymore when playing chapters 28 thru the end. I'll disable TCP whenever I watch a movie, but re-enable it afterwards since it's meant to protect the TV from image-retention/burn-in from static images.

Ordinarily, this isn’t an issue, but with material that’s already this dark to begin with, it made all the difference in the world.
Could you please tell us how you can access it? I would like to try this myself.

Me too. Although is it true they don’t recommend doing this?

Every time you enter service menu it's registered by your TV, so if you want to lose your warranty...

I got hit by the ASBL on my C7 too in the saloon scene near the end, and it's so gradual you never notice it happening. After a while you just get the feeling something is amiss, so you start to fiddle with the remote and suddenly the whole screen lights up and you go "What the hell!? How friggin' long has it been like this!?" and have to rewind to re-watch the last scene properly.

It's a useful idea in theory but the implementation is just outright horrible, being far too aggressive and coarse. It can trigger on just about anything if the shot is long enough, and once it does will sometimes not let go even after multiple cuts/scene changes.

Watching Steve McQueen's Hunger must be a great experience on these OLEDs.

What’s the best button to hit to get the screen to light up. Is there one you use that isn’t bringing up any menus etc? I could try myself but I’m away at the moment.

It is a bit of a pain, although Crouching Tiger was honestly the first UHD it’s happened to me on. Haven’t bought Unforgiven yet.

It's a feature to prevent burn-in on OLEDs. I know it's an issue on the LGs, I don't know if other brands have it or if their implementations are any better.

Not that I know of, I think the only way to shake it off is to change the image on the screen past whatever thresholds they have defined (e.g. by bringing up a bright menu) but if you do find something then let me know.

Just google ASBL OLED service menu, and you’ll find how to access the service menu. Also, I researched this HEAVILY before messing with a service menu setting, and there have been absolutely NO reports of anyone experiencing burn-in with this feature disabled. The TV is MISTAKING the film as a static image because the average brightness doesn’t change for an extended period of time. It’s useful if you are actually planning to WATCH a static image for extended periods (or DEMO static images or static station logos all day long - which is why this “feature” is on by default...it would be useful in a retail setting). In short, unless you plan to purposefully abuse your television and leave it on something static for hours upon hours, you’re not going to have a problem turning this off. I’ve experienced absolutely no issues since changing it.

Technically, any setting changes made in the Service Menu by an unauthorized person could be justification for LG not to honor the warranty if a need arises. In addition, the provider of any extended warranties could choose not to honor their warranties as well. The LG warranty is only 1 year and I can get a pro-rated refund of my extended warranty, so this is a calculated risk I choose to take because the auto-dimming is absolutely unacceptable.

Even on my LCD some of the lengthy shots in Unforgiven get a little darker as the scene goes on. LCDs can only do peak brightness for X number of seconds, and Unforgiven is the only UHD I've watched where that can be an issue. Small flame lights in pitch black rooms with long takes, etc.

Disc looked great in all respects on my JVC and custom curve.

On my prior Epson LS10000 using the Panasonic UB900 for SDR tone mapping, it looked a bit dark for sure. Even the outdoor scenes that were sunny just looked a little off.

An impressive looking difference there. Are those sliders the difference between the newly mastered BD and UHD, or the difference between the old crappy BD and the new UHD?

I’ll have to revist this again. Of one my all time favourites. I miss 90’s cinema...

I’m looking forward to getting this one now that I have another UHD player. One quick sanity check though. Blacks are black on this one? I could swear people said the UHD was even blacker than the BD, so confirming this is true?

Not even Dolby Vision could fix that.

But I'm not saying the sky is falling, I'm saying this may prove to be an issue as this is only one user's feedback after all. It just struck a chord with me given that I remembered someone worrying about how these quick dynamic adjustments could affect the display. Time will tell.

I've only had my OLED a couple of weeks and watched Unforgiven last night; what I saw was a kind of contrast/brightness stuttering after very dark scenes. The transition to a bright scene immediately afterwards seemed to happen in a couple of split second phases, as if the panel couldn't quite adjust fast enough.

This is the only time I've seen this phenomena (granted, so far I only have three 4k discs). Very odd.

That might be the Auto Brightness Limiter (ABL) readjusting the image, or perhaps you have some form of contrast enhancement turned on?
