Preordered this from Best Buy and was told the release date was May 16th. Just received an update from Best Buy saying it was now the 23rd and yet Amazon still shows the release date as the 16th. What gives? Any chance Best Buy still ships this to me on the 16th? Or am I stuck waiting?

Obviously that's not true across the board, different studios have different tactics. Also Warner are raising prices in general, across the board, as a response to disc media's market shrinking. Less buyers, higher prices. That's why laserdiscs were $70 or more sometimes. Warner raised the normal day one price for a new BD movie to $25, and they switched all their catalog releases to Warner Archive at $20 a pop, and on UHD everything seems to release at $30. Honestly I doubt these are the last price hikes we see. A lot of people buying discs aren't going to accept this switch from mainstream DVD boom pricing to niche collector market pricing, but it is what it is. I would guess a lot of those people will stop buying and move to digital, which sucks, but whatareyagonnado? |

Is amazon's release date still the 16th? Best Buy's changed to the 23rd.

I'm new to 4K so maybe this is normal but I've never seen release dates flip flop like this so frequently. Seems odd.

Not a fan of WhySoBlu, but interesting to hear they think the daytime scenes are a lot darker on the UHD. I remember Unforgiven being pretty warm and sunsety, so we'll have to see how it turns out. There are definitely a couple UHDs where the daytime scenes were darkened a little too much and it looks like permanent sunset.
P.S. Mine still says "arriving Tuesday, May 16" on Amazon. Hope it doesn't get delayed. |

This is specifically due to the static metadata. I wonder how long it will take for a second UHD release to come out with some type of dynamic metadata HDR. If they add HDR10+, Technicolor HDR, or Dolby Vision to a "special edition", the bright scenes will no longer be darker than on the regular Blu-ray. UHD with static metadata is like two steps forward, one step back. They really need to update the BDA spec to require dynamic metadata (HDR10+) moving forward via HDMI 2.1. They probably should've waited for HDMI 2.1 to launch the format. Static metadata actually hurts picture quality, especially compared with dynamic metadata, but sometimes even compared to no metadata at all. |

Found a "Home Theater Forum" review for the UHD Unforgiven disk. It's unfortunately not a positive review...
"Comparing the new 4k UHD/HDR with the new Blu-ray,... On the UHD disk blacks take over the image, with a decided loss of shadow detail. The overall image is darker... the included standard Blu-ray image up-rezzed, and the UHD image as viewed from the UHD disc, are not much different, aside from HDR. But in my opinion, the included Blu-ray, which is only available packaged with the 4k, is worth the price of admission. " Warner Bros. are Unforgiven for releasing this a month too early to include Dolby Vision. Oh, what could have been. Personally, I won't want a 4K copy that is darker than the 1080p disk, an issue DV could fix. You're buying a UHD Blu-ray, better PQ is supposed to be the reason you're buying it. It sounds like it's such a mixed bag that the new remastered 1080p copy is more appealing, which is just embarrassing over a year into the UHD format. https://www.hometheaterforum.com/com...lu-ray.352579/ Last edited by philochs; 05-14-2017 at 07:32 AM. |

I'm not sure I agree with your interpretation -- it's a 5/5 star review. Mr. Harris says, among other things, that the 4K version has harvested all of the possible detail in the source material -- but the source material itself only yields so much resolution. His main criticism is that the 4K version is too dark, but acknowledges this may be a result of his projector set up.
