[Show spoiler]First off, the UHD is darker, yes. However it is not too dark. Daytime scenes look appropriately bright when sunny, more overcast when not. There's not a huge difference there unless you have your backlight on very high with SDR. It's the nighttime scenes which look a lot darker in a lot of cases, but I looked hard at small details and they still were visible. Considering the climax (for example) takes place on a rainy night in a town without electricity I think the UHD looks more appropriate, very dark and fire-lit, but still all details visible.

More importantly the HDR really adds a lot of texture to this one. There is a lot of 3D style "pop" going on with people and objects due to the added depth HDR provides. There is also a nice detail boost, lots more crispness. I looked at hands, saddles, things like that and it was very obvious. Color was hard to judge on a quick skip through but I noticed the scene where Eastwood waits for the money toward the end looked MUCH more like dusk than the BD did. The opening sunset against the cabin looked MUCH more restrained than the red explosion on the BD.

To my quick eye the UHD looks much more like film and is very pleasing. I totally get why this will be a divisive disc though, because I bet having the right nits, color volume and tone mapping will matter a LOT, and how much you want your UHDs to look like film will matter a LOT too.

If anything changes when I watch the film later I'll update. There might be some scenes I didn't see that look off.
Ugh, I have a feeling I'll be picking this up later today....

I remeber those days! I also remember before the web I use to call Ken Crane's Laserdisc's 800 number and get the new releases for the week on the automated message.

I always used the check boxes on my trusty Ken Crane's newsletter.

I'll be making sure that the EOTF and the >1000-nit tone mapping is properly represented too before watching anything in particular. I've got my own meter and software to check calibration and 10k's vast input in the AVS thread is a place to start but he keeps contrast very, very high at the expense of some clipping because he thinks stuff is too dark with the contrast set any lower, but if it's tracking the PQ curve correctly at a lower contrast setting then it is what it is.

Gonna keep my thoughts to myself for a good few days if not weeks though because there will still be peaks and troughs re: setup that need negotiating so I won't be making any pronouncements until I feel I've got it properly dialled in. Hopefully it'll be in time for the UK release of Unforgiven....
Take your time my man (though try not to take too long ) considering how closely we see eye to eye on matters of nerdy PQ, what you see is pretty much what I see. Enjoy the TV first and foremost.

I can't believe how unprepared for the demand Amazon is on some of these 4K releases. The world's biggest online retailer is having a hard time keeping up with the demand of a supposedly niche product. This is the 2nd or 3rd time that I have had a 4k title delayed this year. Maybe 4K sales are exceeding everyone's expectations.

It's a good thing there's much more demand than expected I suppose. I remember with the Warner Archive releases they had a lot more demand than expected on some genre titles and then all of a sudden they ramped up their schedule to do 5 or so movies a month and a lot of them are genre stuff. So the same could happen eventually with catalog UHD.

*crosses fingers*

For those of you having trouble finding this, I just got an email from WBHE about "Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of UNFORGIVEN - now available in 4K Ultra HD!" and at the bottom, it says to buy it at Best Buy or (for some reason) Google Play. So I guess maybe they have exclusivity or something?

You just have to pay $37.99 at BB. What a steal.

My Best Buy didn't even have any in stock. Even if they did I was not going to pay $37.99 for it.

It's THAT much? I could maybe talk myself into paying $29.99 but not that much. Not for any one movie. Call me a catalog release/physical media killer if you must

Just go into BB and ask for a price match at the register. They'll ask you to show it on your smartphone so have the Amazon $32.59 price ready to show them. It's very simple.

I was going to wait for the price to drop more, but curiosity about the PQ and the fact that this is a great movie with top tier replay value got the better of me.

I wouldn't count on it. Typically, BB won't pricematch unless Amazon has the title in stock, which they currently do not.
