Thanks for sharing this. I bought a Harmony remote to try this and confirm it also works for the 2017 OLED models. Turned off ASBL via the TCP disable from the "in-start" menu and can confirm that the TV doesn't auto-dim anymore when playing chapters 28 thru the end. I'll disable TCP whenever I watch a movie, but re-enable it afterwards since it's meant to protect the TV from image-retention/burn-in from static images.

![]() It's a useful idea in theory but the implementation is just outright horrible, being far too aggressive and coarse. It can trigger on just about anything if the shot is long enough, and once it does will sometimes not let go even after multiple cuts/scene changes. Watching Steve McQueen's Hunger must be a great experience on these OLEDs. ![]() |

It is a bit of a pain, although Crouching Tiger was honestly the first UHD it’s happened to me on. Haven’t bought Unforgiven yet. |

It's a feature to prevent burn-in on OLEDs. I know it's an issue on the LGs, I don't know if other brands have it or if their implementations are any better.
Not that I know of, I think the only way to shake it off is to change the image on the screen past whatever thresholds they have defined (e.g. by bringing up a bright menu) but if you do find something then let me know. |

Just google ASBL OLED service menu, and you’ll find how to access the service menu. Also, I researched this HEAVILY before messing with a service menu setting, and there have been absolutely NO reports of anyone experiencing burn-in with this feature disabled. The TV is MISTAKING the film as a static image because the average brightness doesn’t change for an extended period of time. It’s useful if you are actually planning to WATCH a static image for extended periods (or DEMO static images or static station logos all day long - which is why this “feature” is on by default...it would be useful in a retail setting). In short, unless you plan to purposefully abuse your television and leave it on something static for hours upon hours, you’re not going to have a problem turning this off. I’ve experienced absolutely no issues since changing it.

Technically, any setting changes made in the Service Menu by an unauthorized person could be justification for LG not to honor the warranty if a need arises. In addition, the provider of any extended warranties could choose not to honor their warranties as well. The LG warranty is only 1 year and I can get a pro-rated refund of my extended warranty, so this is a calculated risk I choose to take because the auto-dimming is absolutely unacceptable.

Even on my LCD some of the lengthy shots in Unforgiven get a little darker as the scene goes on. LCDs can only do peak brightness for X number of seconds, and Unforgiven is the only UHD I've watched where that can be an issue. Small flame lights in pitch black rooms with long takes, etc.

I’ll have to revist this again. Of one my all time favourites. I miss 90’s cinema...

I've only had my OLED a couple of weeks and watched Unforgiven last night; what I saw was a kind of contrast/brightness stuttering after very dark scenes. The transition to a bright scene immediately afterwards seemed to happen in a couple of split second phases, as if the panel couldn't quite adjust fast enough. This is the only time I've seen this phenomena (granted, so far I only have three 4k discs). Very odd. Last edited by John Hodson; 04-15-2018 at 12:27 PM. |
