Considering it's an 8K (65mm) film it should really shine. Just imagine seeing it in its native resolution.

There's more to quality video than resolution though. How is the compression and bitrate on that Sony service? If I see compression in the blacks like I do on Netflix or Vudu then I don't care what resolution it is, I'm opting for the BD.

Why is that unfortunate? There is an intermission anyways, which lends itself perfectly to a disc change. I don't see what the problem is.

The download file is around 70-80 gb, IIRC. Much, much better then Netflix or Vudu could be, precisely because it is a download and doesn't need to be streamed. I imagine the that the Vidity downloads will be comparable to UHD BD for the same reason.

This is such an incredible price that I almost want to buy another Copy just to keep sealed.

But I'm starting to get short on room as it is, so I'll have to pass.

But if you don't have this already, you are crazy if you don't jump on this.

I meant it's unfortunate concerning the lack of extras.

The intermission is part of the film anyway. It's just better to put it all on one disc than splitting it apart. Especially in this day and age w/ how much BD can take.

What are the specs on the JPN BD? How much space was used on each disc for just the film?

Using the specs at capsaholic, by my quick calcumalations the first part of the film running 2H 19M is slightly under 35GB for the video encode alone, i.e. not including audio. The second disc's video encode runs 1H 27M and is roughly 22GB in size. By way of comparison, the entire 3H 47M feature on the first release is just over 36GB in size.

As for splitting it up, people have been moaning about having to get up and change discs since the DVD days, I've never quite understood why. Perhaps it's because I'm an LD fan, I had CAV editions of some movies which needed six side changes and three disc changes, so changing one disc over is nuthin'.

Especially with movies this long - close to four hours - I don't mind it really. Chances are good one needs to go to the bathroom, get a glass of water or whatever by the end of the first disc. If nothing else, stretching the legs for a few seconds doesn't hurt.

Unfortunately Smurfs 2 seems to have taken priority.

I wouldn't mind changing discs at a natural cut-off like an intermission. If it were not that, it might bother me.

Exactly. And (as the individual traveller has just stated ^ while I've been typing this) if there's a natural break point built in anyway then what's the problem? People love to moan about changing the disc "breaking the illusion" but I know I'm not in the theater when I watch it at home, so the occasional brief break or interruption isn't some horribly detrimental thing to me.

That's right- silly me; I'd forgotten that Sony has already announced their launch titles. And yes, they are certainly some... choices... for the format.

It's a laugh, ain't it? Sony are certainly doing their bit for the format, only I'm not sure whether it's positive or negative given that wretched launch slate.
