I was sorry to see Arsenal lose too (sorry Max), but moreso because I hate Chelsea.
Still, at least Liverpool lost too.

Do you get the English games live over there Penton? (or O'Penton now that I know you have some Irish blood in you )

Penton, it must have been tough to watch given the early lead although not as bad as seeing my team get ripped at Old Trafford. I truly hope Arsenal or Chelsea beats them to the title...anyone but Man United. By the way, three fun games coming up between our teams!

On a related note, I watched the Arsenal-Chelsea game in on my projector and HD football at 100" looks fantastic. Do you know if there are any plans, probably originating from European studios, to start releasing games/docs on BluRay? Ever since the Champions League final of 2005 I've been hoping for some news regarding this game and others being released in HD.

So, all I'm saying is make sure if you are going to call someone out as a liar that you're absolutely 100% sure that they are lying (which unfortunately leaves out about 99.98% of the people posting on any of the forums).
not at all, it is up to the person making the original post to be 100% sure they are right. No one is saying that everything these people post that is consistently wrong is 100% made up. Some are dumb tools and others are just too far removed from the facts to be able to bring new info to the forefront (because of the flux that you talked about earlier). It is for them to know if it is real info or if it is not. In the end all I can do is question what they post. If someone said Fox (or Disney or LG or MGM) was going HD DVD I don't know if it was because an exec at Fox (or that other studio) thought for a second "do I accept the bribe and go HD DVD" and was asked by that fake insider at that time, if it came from a Toshiba or MS exec that made the pitch to the other studio to go HD DVD and thought they might have got a nibble or even if it was from someone marketing person that new he had lost all credibility and thought having a few people repeating the same BS rumour might make it sound more credible. In the en all I know (and care) was that the info they brought was unreliable because it was wrong. If these people care about their credibility then they should make sure what they write is right. It is not up to me to be gullible and believe them because their intensions might not have been all bad.

PS since your original post referred to Kosty, the guy for around three months at the beginning of last year was there saying how it was a fluke that BD had a lead in sales and that BD will start selling poorly soon and then the next three month talking how OK the PS3 effect is real but the new cheap HD DVD players will turn it around (at least until mid year when I stopped going to AVS). He has tried to use his pseudo insider knowledge and his deranged thinking process to try and get morons to jump to insane conclusions.

This is a real problem of the Internet in general. It's become increasingly hard to sort the good, accurate information from the noise and FUD. It's hard enough for experienced enthusiaists, and MUCH harder for newcomers.

Yeah, I still speak with him occasionally. Fortunately, I don’t ostracize people because of what format they happen to like. Only a real douche bag would be that shallow.

Agreed. That and the fact that people don't even bother to read past the first line anymore before they have started compiling their rebuttal. I never once said anything negative about Penton, only that everyone runs the risk of being given bad information outside of their control. How someone can return with “how dare you question Penton’s track record!” is beyond me. I actually praised him for being savvy enough to know when information was ripe enough to pull from the tree.

Yeah, that happened in late October.

At least from what I've read it seems most people's negative opinion of him had little to do with the ormat he supported and more to do with the false rumors he spread.

Or his douchebag attempts at rebuttles where he has no case and continues to attack anyone who doesnt agree with him. He really is pathetic. Has nothing to do with his hd dvd preference.

Seriously, thanks for the research. It is indeed difficult for me to remember exactly which HD DVD zealots said what during the format war and how they have since *metamorphosed* because there were so damn many of them.

I feel only a little sorry for you - my best mate supports the Gooners too, and I used up the sympathy talking to him—I'm United through and through, and the weekend went exactly as hoped from that POV. Now if only the Toffees can snatch fourth, it would be perfect

(sorry for the footy talk, but I didn't start it..)

BTW, Penton, have you read the latest editorial on Home Media Magazine?

Dumping the DVD Dump Bins

Apparently, Wal-Mart is getting rid of the DVD dump bins, possibly to make room for bigger Blu-ray Disc displays.

However, what is keeping Wal-Mart from replacing the DVD bins with Blu-ray bins?

That was a great article. Those dump bins severely hurt the image of blu-ray, especially when i'd see movies from fox that were 27.99 on amazon, for 2.99 in one of those dump bins. Even a BD fan like myself would wonder who in the world is going to buy the BD at those prices. They need to re-evaluate DVD pricing and the dumping of the bins is a excellent start.

Another thing that would help is if retailers, specifically Best Buy, would offer up a larger discount on a new release title. Studios are setting list prices on their BDs to be fairly close to the DVD, but retailers aren't discounting the BDs much, if at all. It's not very enticing when they have an ad showing a new release title on BD for $34.99 and the dvd is right beside it at $14.99.

Hi Penton,

I saw your post over in paid's thread about your SCEA contact and thought this might be a question you could please pass on to him. I was wondering why the PS3 doesn't upconvert 480p and 1080i video on Blu-ray discs to 1080p and instead outputs it in its native resolution. Everything else, from DVDs to video clips saved on the XMB, is upconverted, so this seems more like an oversight than anything else. Is there any technical reason why the PS3 can't do this upconversion? If not, can this be a feature that's added by firmware update?

Thanks,
Bryan
Agreed.

In fact, this is the reason I have to now get another BD player (my new display can't handle the PS3's constant changing from one HDMI resolution to another and dropping the 1080p60 lock).

I'd second that motion. It's a huge pain.

Third here.

My Pioneer 5010FD reports 36-bit from BDs, and my Onkyo will upscale <1080p to 30-bit. So, there is an issue even if 1080p is maintained.
