This assumes they're both the same thing. If they really felt like a part one and part two I doubt they would do this. I would guess one movie is about Thanos and the other is a completely different villain tangentially related.

I was expecting the fourth movie to be Infinity War, not the third. But I trust Kevin Feige and Joe and Anthony Russo to pull this off in the most epic way possible.

But then the other villain would suffer from not being Thanos.

Thanos loses the Gauntlet to Warlock/Magus who are the central figures in The Infinity War......comics. They dont have to even go there.

Adam Warlock's cosmic cocoon was in The Collector's headquarters in GotG.

That would make more sense than just some random villain.

If Thanos isnt the end game then I DONT want to see him as a threat in both films.

But I'm not sure Warlock/Magus has the drawing power as the FINAL threat.

At least with that example it is what happened in the original story though and could possibly work on film, depending on how well it is executed.

I'm guessing Infinty War (2018) will end with our core 6 (or 8 including Scarlet Witch and Vision) Avengers going up against Thanos and failing spectacularly. Then Avengers 4 (2019) will be called "The New Avengers" and we have EVERYONE go up against Thanos (Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, etc.) and win. Phase 4 would then be The New Avengers (with Tony Stark as their Nick Fury type character). That's how I would do it, but hey I didn't make $750 million off of a tree and a racoon, so I'm sure whatever Marvel does will work.

They've built up Thanos for far too long. There's no way he'll live up to everyone's expectations. I have a feeling that he won't be any better than the typical Marvel villain.

Maybe I need to read that article again but was it an actual quote that Avengers 3 would be Infinity War? It seems like that statement was just part of the article. As in the website is assuming that.

Loki, Ultron, The Winter Soldier, Red Skull, "Whiplash", Malekith, Ronin.......I dont think Thanos will be typical if he has the Infinity Gems.

Without them yes, but if he gets the gauntlet, there is no way he's typical.
He become a universal time & space threat, not some regular Earth threat.

Deadline has stated that Avengers 3 is Infinity War while the fourth is currently Untitled Avengers.

Quote:
Marvel Studios has decided on a title for the in-development Avengers 3, making official that the film will be called Avengers: Infinity War. Avengers 4, meanwhile, has been given the placeholder name Untitled Avengers.

Infinity War is the first installment of a two-part story that concludes with Untitled Avengers; the two films were announced together at an event in October 2014 as Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2. Their respective release dates of 5/4/18 and 5/3/19 have not been changed.

Both films are being helmed by Anthony & Joe Russo, who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War and were handed the reins of Marvel’s flagship franchise following the departure of Joss Whedon, who directed 2012’s The Avengers and last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, both of which are among the seven top-grossing films of all time worldwide. The Russos confirmed in May that Avengers 3 and 4 were being retitled in part to put to rest speculation that the two films were merely one large film split in half.

Widely believed to be inspired by the 1991 Marvel Comics miniseries Infinity Gauntlet, Avengers: Infinity War and Untitled Avengers has been described by Joe Russo as an event in which the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe up to that point will unite “to battle the greatest threat to the world and universe that you’ve ever seen.” The miniseries saw the Marvel Comics universe faced with doom when archvillain Thanos the Mad Titan, in love with/obsessed with the (female) physical incarnation of Death, assembles all six “Infinity Gems,” granting him godlike power over the universe. (For those keeping score, the gems control Time, Space, Mind, Soul, Reality and Power.) Believing she’ll reciprocate his feelings if he delivers enough souls to her, his plan is to kill half of all living things.

Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, has been established as a major behind-the-scenes player in the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First seen in a voiceless cameo in the stinger to Avengers, where the obsession with Death was teased, he showed up again as a major supporting character in Guardians of the Galaxy and later in the stinger for Age of Ultron. As with the comics, the Infinity Gems — called stones in the MCU — have played a major role, factoring into the plots of Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy and Age of Ultron.

While the plot and casting have been kept largely under wraps, Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) have been confirmed to appear in the films, with the assumption being that Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johannson, Samuel L. Jackson, and other longstanding Marvel cast members also will appear. The Russos also have teased appearances by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange as well as Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, though Marvel Studios has clarified that Captain Marvel will debut first in a stand-alone film to be released between Infinity War and Untitled Avengers.

I agree with ArrestedDevelopment. Thanos is overhyped.

I'm confused. So Infinity War is not two films anymore, and will be the 2018 Avengers movie. However, the film known previously as Infinity War II (for 2019) is now just "Avengers 4". So does this mean the Thanos build up is resolved in 2018? If so, then why do an Avengers movie in 2019? They should establish Phase 4 before Avengers 4.

I don't know...the way this is being reported is confusing. This is either really no big deal and changes nothing but the titles (as some have pointed out...the Russo Bros said this might happen)...OR something big has happened behind the scenes we don't know about (actor contracts? budget? who knows)...

Either way, I'll be watching these movies.

As I understood it, they just kept the date-slot. Perhaps a sequel to another MCU-entity or a new solo film? (Black Widow?!)

I'm sure they will clarify these things eventually. Maybe the Avengers roster will change dramatically after the Avengers 3, which could make Avengers 4 an intro movie for a new team?

I kind of hope one of them still feels like an ending, that was the original promise. I feel like the MCU is starting to wear out its welcome (for me) so an ending I could stop on would be nice.

From how I've seen it reporting, it sounds like they're just doing what the Russo Bros already said would happen- they would get rid of the Part 1 and Part 2 subtitles and rename the individual movies because while both focused on Thanos/The Infinity Gauntlet, they're also two individual films.

I can't see them changing their plans too much at this point, with production on both films set to commence this fall. They're filming them together, so it's likely just that 2019 film has yet to be given a subtitle.

The Russos said early on after releasing Civil War that they want to rename Infinity War because they don't want to give the impression of one big movie split into two.

So my guess is, the Infinity War story will spread over two parts. And I think they want to keep the title under wraps until Infinity War is over. The new title could be a "New Avengers" title to conclude the Infinity War story, referring to a new team of Avengers to transition into Phase 4.
