A movie that has two dozen lead up movies and is based on a comic book is overloaded with characters and action scenes?

It's too much. Too many characters, too much action, too much everything. It's a superhero surplus with too many heroes and not enough screen. It's Infinity overload.
Its fine if he didn't like it, but this needs a lot of characters and action. Half the universe is at stake at the snap of a finger.

Rotten Tomatoes just changed their critic consensus. I have never seen that happen.

Do people not ****ing get that:
This is based on the comics, so obviously it'll have several characters!
Loads of action? Of course that has to happen.

As Chaotic said, the stakes are high.

Which is exactly what we wanted. The negative reviews give me hope. “Overstuffed” Yes Please. “Too much action” That’s what I want.

I can’t find the former but it mentioned what most Part 1’s have which I guess some people didn’t like.

This movie isn't for the critics. This is a movie for the fans who have been there since Iron Man in 08 and grew with these characters.

I never expected this movie to be the second coming of Jesus for critics.

Denis Villeneuve did that last year with BR2049.

I remember a Doctor Who episode a few years back that ended on a moment so massive, the BBC simply deleted it from preview & critic screenings, and didn't tell anyone. The critics saw and reviewed what they thought was a complete episode, and then the whole of Who fandom got a massive shock that Saturday night when the episode aired with that extra scene at the end. Granted, not likely with a $300 million budget film... but still. Could Marvel possibly be pulling a similar rope-a-dope here, with a 149 minute preview screening, and a 156 minute surprise Thursday night?

Avengers: Infinity War: 5/5.

My thoughts (no spoilers). Anything spoilerish is marked. I've avoided dropping any major plot points or spoilers.

- I haven't looked at many reactions but from what I've seen a big criticism is it's a lot to digest or too much going on, but I didn't feel that way. Maybe because I'm a Marvel and comic book fan but there wasn't too much going on for me.

- It's basically divided into three chunks of story (Team Iron Man, Team Captain America, Team Thor). I never found it overwhelming. Characters kind of disappear for long stretches of time, but every story is interesting that you don't find yourself wanting to reach for an invisible fast forward button. I found every aspect of the story engaging.

- This is Marvel's most serious movie but also their funniest. It's not a joke a minute, but there are some seriously big laughs in this one, especially from Drax and Rocket. It's tone is more similar to Winter Soldier than Civil War. It's the same directing team so they all "feel" the same, but Winter Soldier felt even more serious than Civil War, and Infinity War is like Winter Soldier on steroids.

It's not as "serious" as The Dark Knight, for example, because that's just not how Marvel rolls (and there's bigger comedy moments), but it IS very serious, especially for a Marvel movie. It gets very, very dark. Marvel isn't F'ing around this time. Thanos talks about perfect balance in this movie and the movie itself achieves it.

It has those VERY SERIOUS -- and even scary -- moments, but it's well balanced with the comedy scenes. I never felt like the tone was all over the place. This might sound like a contradiction, but it does have more humor than Winter Soldier while also somehow being even more darker and more serious.

- It delivers on big action, but nothing Transformers levels. Actually, save for the third act, most of the action is relatively small scaled. It has these set pieces where an interesting group of characters get in on a fight and it's cool to see Iron Man team with Doctor Strange, or to see
[Show spoiler]Spider-Man swoop in to help Iron Man fight Cull Obsidian
, or to see
[Show spoiler]Spidey and Doctor Strange tangle with half of the Guardians
...

Yes, there's the big Wakanda set piece from the trailers, but it still divvies that scene up into more personal pairings. So you have that big humans vs. aliens Lord of the Rings type battle, but you also get to see certain Avengers take on certain members of the Black Order, and it's great. You also get to see unlikely pairings do combo moves which is super cool.
[Show spoiler]Bucky and Rocket get this sort of recreation of a certain move from the first GOTG
and it's AWESOME.

- Fans of certain characters might end up disappointed because with so many characters, some get the spotlight more than others.
[Show spoiler]Groot
and even
[Show spoiler]Captain America
, for example, don't get too much to do...
[Show spoiler]Groot
has one big moment but otherwise does or says very little. Which is fine; not the most complex or interesting character anyway.

[Show spoiler]Cap
gets a couple big moments (and people applauded when he stepped out) but Tony, Thor, Doctor Strange, and Thanos get the most screentime.

People coming into this expecting to see a lot more Black Panther, Okoye and Shuri might be let down. Their roles aren't "cameos," but they do enter pretty late and get a handful of lines each. I loved Black Panther and enjoyed these characters and want to see more, but I'm fine with them taking a back seat here considering this is an Avengers movie.

More to that point: non-Avengers certainly get their time, but as mentioned, it mostly is a Tony/Thor/Doctor Strange/Thanos movie. The Guardians get their time and there are parts where it's just them, and you can forget you're watching an Avengers movie because it feels like GOTG Vol. 3.

Drax especially shines here. For me, he has the biggest laugh of the movie when the movie slows down and
[Show spoiler]he does his "I move so still I become invisible" speech
. That got the biggest laugh at my screening. I think second biggest was a bit with Rocket and
[Show spoiler]a cybernetic eye
.

All the characters are handled really well. Spider-Man is my favorite and he's not a "minor" role, but he's not a major role. He gets plenty of shining moments, though, both heroic and comedic, and a very dramatic one that is, IMO, the most emotional of any Marvel movie yet. As mentioned, Spidey is my favorite, and I'm really pleased with how he is in this movie. Perfection. Of course I'd have loved to have seen more, but he's not a "main" character, although he has more screen time than in Civil War.

The characters play off each other so well, it delivers in a big way on that front. Tony/Strange get a lot of interaction, and Tony and Spider-Man's interaction with the GOTG is killer. It's hard to point to the best part about this movie, but it just may be how these characters come together and how they interact and play off one another. It feels like The Avengers all over again.

- My biggest problem isn't so much a problem with the movie, but more something I wanted to see that didn't happen:
[Show spoiler]they don't all reunite. Certain characters meet up again but not everyone comes together. We'll have to wait until Avengers 4, bummer.

TLDR: Loved it. Very pleased. The movie is great. It should please most long time Marvel fans as well as the general audience.

The movie has a ton of shockers and I recommend going in spoiler free, if you can. I thankfully was able to and I feel a lot of impact would have been lost if I knew certain things were coming. My showing had people screaming at the screen and verbally expressing their shock at certain moments, it was great.

This is that rare Marvel movie where you feel like anything can happen and it's not "oh, there's no danger, there's no stakes." Nope. It keeps you on edge the whole time and if you're invested in this universe, that anxiousness it gives you just makes it better.

Was the post-credit scene attached to these early screenings? I want to know if it’s something worth staying for or not. If it’s something insignificant and jokey than I’d rather just use the time to get home earlier since I’ll be at a late screening.

There's only one, post-credits. It's serious and major. Worth sticking around for. You can PM me if you'd like to know what it is specifically.

That's a bit disappointing. I was hoping Marvel would break their mold with this film and dial down the humor but as you said that's just how they roll.
