I watched all 3 Rambo's in 4k and the difference is definitely stunning. All 3 transfers were gorgeous and blow the Blu-rays away. I have to give it to Lionsgate I usually don't enjoy most of there 4k titles but this year they've been doing some home hitters.

Just for you Velvet I dusted off my LG 970. Looked fine on my end.

All played fine on mine. PQ looked really good, IMO.

I gotta say I loved Stallone's face when he was in the cave with the firelight. Stellar releases, IMO.

This is why I'm already second-guessing if I should have held off on a player until the next batch of players hits next year rather than ordering the x700 for Christmas. Well I also bought First Blood but I may have to wait until Christmas to open it all and test it out. If my x700 won't play First Blood, back it goes immediately. I really think players are not yet up to par and I don't have the patience these days to deal with "player X won't play disc Y" issues.

Of course if these UHD discs are so temperamental that a hairline scuff or a spec of dust completely wrecks playability, then that's another issue to be worried about imo. The only blu-ray disc I've ever had trouble playing was a Disney one that went bad. Every player I've had has played every blu-ray disc I've thrown at it without complaints.

I watched my AUS blu-ray of First Blood recently and boy is that a dated transfer. Early scenes in broad daylight look decent but once Rambo flees to the forest and the scenery is all dark it looks absolutely terrible.

I haven't moved on to 4K yet (probably won't as long as my Panny Plasma holds up) so I'd love to find a better blu-ray release. Is the new 4K scan available on blu-ray in America? and would any Aussies know if we have the new 4K master on blu-ray here?

Thanks. It's a weird issue for sure. I mostly use my Sony but have watched quite a few things on the LG and never had this issue before. It's like HDR is not kicking in or something.

After tons and tons of testing I'm 90% sure the Sony's issue is just being VERY sensitive to dust, smudges and scratches. Like it has a finicky laser or something. If I clean these they might work. I think the review for Rambo 2 on here even mentions having to do that. My LG player plays everything I throw at it though.

My Sony won't play Wonder Woman no matter what I do though, even after trying like 5 copies. That is SUPER weird.

Can't say I've had any playback issues with my allegedly "notoriously twitchy" Samsung. Even my copy of Dunkirk which has some visible scratches still plays through perfectly.

It played perfectly fine on my X700 player

Is the digital code 4k or hd? On the spreadsaheet it say 4k but some claim they are just hd.

At least they can't mess up his black and white films... right?

Btw, not wanting to digress too much but I wonder if Ran will be coming out on UHD BD. Apparently it was restored two years ago and hinted at a UHD BD release but nothing so far.

Edit: poked around and it seems Toho Studios carried out the restorations for Seven Samurai and Ikiru at least.

Of course a finicky laser isn't comforting considering I have several scuffed UHD discs already. Between Stranger Things S1 and S2 UHD discs being scratched out of the case (thanks, cardboard), and another one also having some scuffs (can't remember which one now), this worries me. I don't always watch everything I buy right away, and I haven't even been able to test my current discs since I haven't had a player. So if I find a bunch of my current UHD discs can't be played with my new Sony player due to tiny scuffs, then maybe the Sony player isn't ideal.

Sorry to get sidetracked - just really frustrating to hear UHD discs being so prone to issues from the smallest scratches.

Trust me I get the concern, I'm pretty frustrated with these issues and the idea of having to buy a third player if they continue. I will say however that I still seem to be in a minority, so who knows how prevalent these issues are. I might just have really bad luck.

Ritrovita get a lot of praise for their black and white stuff but oy vey, give them anything that's got colour in it and watch them flush it down the toilet. They do actually do excellent restoration work in terms of the nuts and bolts of digital clean-up & repair, but you can't leave them alone with the colour dials because they will **** your shit up. Thank God Sony only outsourced the digital restoration portion to them when they did A Matter of Life and Death in 4K, the actual colour grading was done by Sony themselves back in the US.
