Few people are a bigger sucker for double dipping than I am.

But in this case I WILL wait.

Maybe, JUST maybe New Line will surrprise us and also include the extended editions as well. I dont need all the previous extras, just the films. They speak for themselves.

Just put in my pre order!

I can't believe all of these people are whining about extended editions, I mean come the hell on. Did you not go see the movie in the theater because you knew someday an extended edition would come out? HELL NO, so stop whining and support blu ray. How this trilogy does will reflect directly upon when we get star wars. You KNOW George Lucas will be watching how LOTR does very carefully.

I really hope the fans send a message that if you cant give us the version we want then don't bother releasing them.

It would be ideal that they release both versions though via seemless branching.

**** that.....once you see the EE editions, the TE are simply not the same IMHO. Will give these a rent and that is it

I have over 150 blurays. I have supported bluray as well anyone can reasonably ask, especially back in the days of Warner being neutral. God I cant believe how many of their films I bought that I will never watch just to do my part to keep them to the blu camp.

People went to see them at the theater to know if it would be worth it to see the extended editions.

Agreed.

HOWEVER, they should both exist ON A SINGLE DISC via seamless branching. People who want to see the full movie as intended by the director shouldn't need to wait YEARS to enjoy it. Yes, people who want to see the theatrical cut alone should be able to, but those who want the full experience shouldn't be punished for being bigger fans.

You can't really blame the studios for 'double dipping' as the real enemy here are the idiots who buy/download sub-standard copies of movies. The only way for the studios to recoup their loses is to bring out multiple versions i'm afraid.
Not true at ALL by a LONG SHOT. This movie has already proven itself STUPIDLY profitable for the company. There is no LOSS for them here. It's all gain. Yes, there is the initial investment of preparation of the material for home consumption and the physical cost of production, but they'll make that back MANY TIMES OVER from a SINGLE PRESSING. They don't do this double dip process to "recoup their losses", they do it to milk even higher profits from popular properties. Now, I can't blame them for doing what they can to maximize profits, but it is tiresome to see them spit so heartily in the faces of fans. It's one thing to say "we're going to double dip this", but it's a whole other to say "fans are going to have to wait years to get what they want". If they're going to plan a double dip AND announce it, don't make us wait freaking years for it.

I wasn't even aware that such a thing would happen, and if I had been aware of it, I would have certainly been *****ing on the Internet about how the extended edition never got a theatrical release.

Not likely. I don't know why people are looking forward to Star Wars, because I am wholly confident that we won't be seeing Star Wars on BD until after the 3-D "remixes" have all gotten theatrical releases. Sort of like what they're doing with Toy Story 1 and 2. We won't be seeing them until after their upcoming theatrical run ends.

If they said that there would be no releases for two years because Jackson needs to work on the extended sequences, fans would be saying that the least they could do would be to put out the theatrical versions in the meantime.

Warner can't win here.

At least we know that a blu-ray release is inevitable. That can't be said of all of the films that I want on blu-ray.

As a gesture, Warner could offer a $10 or $20 credit if you send in a proof of purchase from the TE's, but I don't see what else they can do if the EE's truly aren't ready.

For me it's pretty simple: no extended version means no sale.

The extended versions have already been released on DVD way back so there's no reason for them to go back to the theatrical cut now. For me, that's just inexcusable and a deal-breaker.

As much as I loved the LotR movies, it'll be without me for now, at least until the extended cuts come out.

The '76 Kong was Paramount. Peter Jackson's was with Universal.
Ah yeah. Thanks for the correction.

I am surprised renting is not even an option for more people......
This wasn't addressed to me and I'm sure I've said this earlier in the thread but I want both. The LoRT theatrical versions of the movies were my favorite movies until the extended edition was released. When that was released, it didn't diminish how I felt about the theatrical version in the slightest. I really don't get how people could go from loving the movies one minute to not even wanting them the next. I love both and I want both. I also still watch the theatrical edition almost as much as the EE.

You know, I tried to watch the beginning of FOTR EE last night to see how it held up. WOW! I don't remember it being THAT boring. Frodo doesn't even make it out of the Shire for the first hour of the movie it seems.

I'm starting to rethink this purchase. I might get it because it does move a lot faster. And I have a friend who has never seen it before. I don't want to ruin his first viewing with something that is too long and drawn out. Perhaps the extended/additional scenes in the extended editions are more for hard core fans?

The real question should be how much are you wiling to pay for the EE. If they are released like the standard DVDs were in the books with 4 discs I would bet they will be $70-$90 for each movie.

Peter Jackson is the one who wanted to hold off on the release of the EE on BD because he wants to be involved in getting these ready. I also heard that he has something special planned for the EE releases on BD. He is busy with the Hobbit movie right now and WB/New Line is just trying to accommodate the demand from the fans to bring these to Blu. I personally respect WB for giving us a heads up instead of releases one version then a year later surprises us with an altyernate version like so many other studios do. "ahem" SONY "ahem"

I don't know why people are looking forward to Star Wars either. They should know by now that George Lucas is just going to screw them up even more with each release. King of the Nerds George always having to jump on the latest technology for the same tired old movies.

No desire to buy the theatricals. Yeah there's some un-needed stuff but mostly if tons better (except Return of the King, which had too many endings anyway).

of course I've seen each film, theatrical and extended combined, about 11 times or more. I'm kinda burned out on them.

Oh and in 2002 when it came to VHS (we were slow and broke and so were our friends) we told some friends of ours they had to watch it. The couple had immigrated from Russia about ten years beforehand, maybe a little more, (The dad was Israeli but came here after going to Russia). Then they had a couple kids who were a bit younger than me at the time. Anyway, they got to the end of "Fellowship" after renting it and the mom was like "Not like most American movies with all the happy ending, great show" since apparently a lot of Russian movies are open ended and depressing. Then her son was like "It's part one of 3"

Also that same year when I loaned them "Spider-Man" his dad cracked "I thought it was about some Jewish guy named (pronounced) Speederman". It was simple but we all laughed pretty hard

Your first statement reminds me of Jack Nicholson's comment on the "too many endings" I personally find the endings to be just right.

It's also interesting to take in to account the opinions of different cultures. That's what makes the world go around.

Anyway, love the artwork!
