I think they were more of an early demonstration of diversity and cultural harmony and weren't quite as comic in the book. Legolas didn't ask Gimli if he needed a box at Helm's Deep.

No, they weren't. In the books, each was a formidable warrior and one of the best representatives of their respective races. Gimli wasn't falling all over the place while they were chasing the Urak-Hai orcs that had Merry and Pippin. Gimli didn't weep at Balin's tomb, he just put his hood over his head and lowered his head. He didn't make any humorous speeches right before the Elves pointed their arrows at his head. After being in Lorien, Gimli and Legolas became friends. They did get into a counting contest to see who could kill the most orcs. I'm not sure why Gimli had a Scottish accent in the movies either. Neither were there "dwarf tossing" references in the books either.

I don't remember if the movies brought out the fact that Legolas was the son of the Elf-king of Mirkwood.

ok, thanks for the replies.

I didn't like how Gimli was portrayed in the movies, but it's nothing big though.

And Gimli didn't speak at all at Council of Elrond. Only his father, gloin was talking.

I prefer the Harry Potter books over every single HP movie, but that doesn't mean I'm going to complain about every aspect of the book that isn't included (or is minutely changed) in the movies. I'm especially not going to bash the creative genius that actually brought these to the big screen even after people told him it was "unfilmable". They left out nearly the entire ending of "Half-Blood Prince", but I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

Point is, everybody knows that you would rather have had Jackson make the movies exactly as the books were word for word, but frankly that's not in any way possible. For almost every book to film adaptation the screen writers have to make sacrifices for different things like comedic relief, because the film is too serious or morbid, or events changing order or the way they happen in order to make the film more practical, etc. There's not one single adaptation that anyone can say is word for word, description by description like the book. And there's also never going to be a version of "The Lord of the Rings" where every single minor detail which you complain about or discuss (such as Gandalf's flippin' hat! or Gimli not crying at Balin's tomb.) is included.

Answer all the questions you want about the adaptations, but there are a million threads on a thousand websites for that, and every single question answered about every single aspect of the books is interpreted differently.
Maybe so but that has nothing to do with the quote of mine you put in your post. If you don't like my posts, feel free to skip over them and don't read them. In fact, I really wish you would ignore my posts as I intend to ignore yours. And you are wrong when you say I want the movies to do the story word for word. That kind of hyperbole is ridiculous. The point is, there were too many changes made to the story that were not neccesary. Bakshi's version had major flaws, but he did a better job of presenting the first half of the story.

Careful, you are guilty of doing the same thing I did. aggienader08 is tired of this and apparently he, or she, is controlling this thread now.

Ok, I deleted my post (not trying to "control the thread"). Look, I really do enjoy reading your posts about the differences between the two.

I wasn't trying to offend anybody, esp. you radagast. I was just pointing out that you're right there are a lot of discrepancies in the film adaptations. And it's the same for every book to film adaptation.

Default Why?

Why are people still buying this. Do not support the studio if they mess up a release, especially as important as this one. They owe us a top of the line, reference transfer, nothing less.

You have to understand my friend the studio is about money, entertainment is about getting entertained for a price never forget that. They need to get paid for this awesomeness how can you get mad at that. I well directed and acted movie deserves every dollar it can gain. Every studio is like this, if the movie is big its probably going to have several different releases, it not just blu ray's, DVD's were exactly the same bro. Look at avatar, regular release then later a special edition and then who knows what else. Maybe Camerons going to give a walk through of the movie butt naked. People are still gonna buy them lol.

If I wasn't interested in the extended cuts only, I would be buying this release. Frankly they look fine from what I can see but if you are not happy with them, don't buy them as I am sure WB does not have a gun to your head forcing you to buy them

I still think I'm stronger than him. He is an old man after all and I'm handsome young man (ok not young but still younger than gandalf) & exercise like three/four hours everyday in Minas Morgul.

@radagast: LOTR movies will always be my favorite movies of all time. Of course I'm loving the books too. Tolkien rules

@aggienader08: I know you were not trying to offend anyone. I also like reading radagast's posts(comparison).

Actually, that is a good question. I think you might be older than Gandalf as he got to Middle Earth much later, after the forging of the rings of powers. Maybe GrandBob would be able to confirm that?

And I can't believe we are having this conversation

Unless the movies lied, Gandalf has been in Middle Earth for 300 lives of men, so he's been there a lot longer than you think.

Oh! I know, he's been around the block but Angmar would have been born a heck of a long time before Gandalf got to Middle Earth. I don't think you can calculate his time spend on Valinor as he wasn't really Gandalf the Grey until he took that shape and came to Middle Earth as an Astari.

picked up this set on friday and so far have watched FOTR and TT

man anyone who is a fan of these films and hasn't picked up this set needs to hand in their fan card cause your missing out on a great Bluray set

Yeah there will be an exgtended cut down the road but three things to remember

1. lifes too short to wait another 2 years for that, enjoy them now
2. The sets are great, awesome PQ and AQ and some nice extras (even if they are ports)
3. The extended cuts probabaly won't be out till late 2012 or early 2013, and the world will be ending on december 21, 2012, so you won't even have a chance to enjoy them, get these sets now!

Same reason you're not buying it: personal preference. We're all free to do as we choose.

I don't understand this boycott mentality. Do you really think you're punishing the studio by not buying this? Do you realize it's one of the hottest selling titles? Do you realize if it didn't sell, the studio would take it as a sign not to invest much in blu-ray in the future?

It is a great transfer, not a mess up. The film was never going to look better than it did in the theaters. If that's what you're holding your breath for, you'll asphyxiate long before a transfer comes along that you like.

Gandalf is incomparably older than Witch King, as he existed in the timeless realm before creation of the earth and arriving in Valinor under the name of "Olorin". However Witch King has lived in Middle-earth longer. Witch King was involved at least since Second Age 2252 and had been in Middle earth for around 2200 years before Gandalf appeared on the scene around Third Age 1000.

+1 i don't think people understand how blu rays are made. They think everything should be reference material, but they fail to realize that a blu ray or DVD is just the compression of its original Theatrical Release. I wish blurry.com would post the video again about how blu ray movies are made so it will ease the pain of some of these Naysayers.

@Gremal
I relize that it your choice and your opinion, but if people dont buy this, the studio is not gonna start thinking that they should not invest in blu ray in the future, thats just stupid. Blu ray is huge, and so is this web site, in which case all the studio needs to do is look at what people are saying, which they do, and see that the transfer is a dissappointment, people are complaining, and thats why people wont buy it, not because blu ray isnt a good investment for them, because it clearly is
