I'm constantly back and forth on this purchase. One part of me is saying to wait for the inevitable EE release. The other part of me, the rational part, looks at the EE DVDs I have, realizing that I've only watched them each once, due to the fact that a)they're long as hell and I just don't have that much time to watch a movie, let alone three, and b) my wife has no interest in watching them at all, so that further limits my opportunity.

While the theatrical editions are certainly long, they're definitely more manageable, so I'm leaning toward just buying them. But then there's the part of me that feels that I will miss out on the "complete experience" even though I wouldn't really consider the LOTR series to even be close to my favorite movies.

Sorry . . . just thinkin' out loud

You couldn't be more wrong. Frodo put on the ring and turned invisable and was all set and ready to walk out of Mount Doom with the ring. If Gollum hadn't of bitten it off his finger the quest would have never been accomplished and we'd all be living in darkness now. We'd be slaves of Sauron and be bossed around by filthy orcses.

Ok...someone explained in an earlier post on why the One Ring could fit the fingers of giants like Sauron and halflings like Frodo (the One Ring being able to resize itself based on its master at the time), but can someone riddle me this? Why throughout the trilogy (espcially in FotR I think) is the One Ring on a chain in some shots and mysteriously chainless in others. Is Frodo killing time on the long journey by takingit off the chain every now and then?

Well Frodo takes it off a bunch of times to "pet" it or to "rub" it. It was his precious as well.

Just posted 16 computer screencaps of RotK. I tried to match them to RicWhite's frames for comparison.

Here's RicWhite's version, photos of the movie running on his projector:

Many that die deserve life and many live that deserve to die. Can you give it to them, Frodo? The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.

It would have injected another unnecessary element into the mix, and distracted from the narrative task, plot progression, and character introductions at hand.

Many of the changes Jackson made became necessary because of earlier decisions he and his writers made. They were constantly battling a ripple effect. Faramir's on-screen incarnation is so different from the books because Denethor is so different. And Denethor is so different because Gondor is slightly different. Gondor is slightly different because of the many minor changes Jackson had to make to 'LotR's political sphere (alterations employed to make Tolkien's world more digestible early in the trilogy). Small changes in 'Fellowship' ultimately led to drastic changes in 'Return of the King.'

Jackson's commentaries on the EE DVDs are invaluable when evaluating the differences between the books and the films. He's rather blunt and forthcoming in his explanations, and it helps tremendously when examining the various changes (whether one agrees with those changes or not ).
I'll have to check them out. That only bolsters the argument that the changes shouldn't have been made in the first place. You can't have an "alternate universe" cascade effect if you don't make the first changes. Alternate universe. Yeah I like that. Jackson's movies are an alternate universe to Tolkien's. I prefer Tolkien's. Even so, it doesn't justify having Gandalf the White, who had previously taken on a Balrog, and saved Faramir from several Ringwraiths, being knocked off Shadowfax by the Witch-King, only to have the Witch-King killed moments later by a hobbit and a human female with no powers, or a ring of power. Ridicuous. Not only would I like that edited out of the BR EEs, I don't even want it in a "deleted scene" special feature. I hate that scene that much.

Considering how old the story is, maybe it's the other way around. It's obvious that Obi-Wan was influenced by Gandalf.

Agree about Gandalf and there are probably other similarities, but were Gimli and Legolas only used for comic relief in the ROTK books?
