What would happen if I try to do a firmware upgrade on my European palyer using a US firmware?
HDR and Dolby Vision are virtually identical

I have the UBD K85000 and the Yamaha RX-V381 connected to a Samsung KS8000.

Although tv says its 2160 and HDT I'm not sure if im getting a 4k picture. The Revenant looks like the standard bluray to my eyes.

I was expecting a huge leap in PQ.

I've seen further back in this thread advice saying: "Turn off all video processing and GUI overlay settings in the receiver (either off or pass-through, depending on the model) as those can mess with the purity of the video signal along the way"

Can anyone tell me how I switch of video processing on this receiver? I'm wading through the manual but can't find it.

I have the receiver set to Mode 1 as instructed.

Thanks,
Stuart.

Maybe your TV is 4K but lacks HDR?

Hi rocky. Tv is 4k and HDR. It's certified as ultra HD premium.

Cheers,
Stuart.

Maybe HDR must be manually enabled from your TV? Do you see the HDR pop-up when you play a 4K/HDR disc?

Yes I did see that message pop up. The tv also automatically changes the picture settings.

I'm comparing the Revenant on 4k and the standard bluray right now. I'm now tending to think there is a difference but hope it's just not me trying to convince myself!

Cheers,
Stuart.

Not saying you don't have an issue (check your cables) but UHD is more a subtle improvement. It's not a huge leap.

Is it correct that we still don't have hdr on Netflix?

If I read right, they put that in firmware 1010 then backed out? My player is on 1009 with no new updates available.

In your ks8000 tv, have you gone to settings->picture->expert settings->hdmi UHD color and enabled the input for your blu player?

Hope that's it!

Thanks for the replies.

I think I'm happy that I have got 4k output. Having spent the evening doing the comparison on the 4k and standard bluray for The Revenant did show differences. The picture seems to have more detail in the background, giving more depth to the picture. Also much brighter colours, which I assume is the HDR effect.

Yes I have switched on UHD colour on HDMI 4 on the TV.

I do think my expectations were too high!

Cheers,
Stuart.

No bud...you can quickly look to see if you have a Dolby vision tv...only a few of the newer modes have it. Specifically LG, not Samsung or Sony...not sure what others have it. I'm very satisfied with my hdr10 though.

No. It's HDR plus higher bit depths (12 rather than 10) plus wider color along with dynamic, per-scene customization via metadata per DV display. It's a complete package.

The display and the player must have DV along with DV encoding of the disc or streaming media.

Hi. Update on my quest for confirmation on 4k output - just watched Deepwater Horizon. Must say as well as it being a very good film, I was very, very impressed with the picture. Very detailed and excellent depth, almost 3D like.

Incredible special effects and great acting.

If you don't have HDR support, your display probably isn't very good at reproducing wider colors either.

The 2017 OLED displays from Sony and LG look promising.

We have a non-HDR Vizio in the living room. There is a huge improvement in picture quality that I've noticed in a lot of movies. Others, not so much. Gods of Egypt didn't impress me as much as I thought it would. The Revenant by far is the best out of what I have so far. The blu-ray of Pacific Rim was a vast improvement in it's upscale. I was surprised at how well it looked. I'm seriously considering upgrading it to 4K now.

As far as I'm concerned, HDR is not a requirement to enjoy an improved picture. Although, it does help.

Same case with me, I have a SDR 4K Philips T.V. plus the Samsung player and I love how 4K picture looks on it either with 4K native UHD BD's or upscaled UHD BD's.
