Okay, so I was looking at the back of my TV.

· HDMI Port 1 SpecUHD Video @30Hz, HDCP 2.2 support
· HDMI Port 2 SpecUHD Video @30Hz, HDCP 2.2 support
· HDMI Port 3 SpecUHD Video @30Hz, HDCP 2.0 support
· HDMI Port 4 SpecUHD Video @30Hz, HDCP 2.0 support
· HDMI Port 5 SpecUHD Video @60Hz, HDCP 2.2 support

Dish Network is hooked up at port 5. Is that the port I need for the player? Or does it matter?

Thanks

Port 5 is necessary for the player. Use 1 or 2 for the Dish box.

If you had a receiver with full spec. 4k HDMI ports (version 2.0a with HDCP 2.2), then you could run everything to port 5 on the TV.

The HDMI port you pick must have HDMI Enhanced enabled on the Sony. That turns on 10 bit processing.

Deep Color on the Samsung must be off. 24 fps conversion off. 24 fps output on auto.

Resolution on the Samsung at 2160p or Auto. Chroma on auto or 4:4:4.
Great, thanks for the firm answer. I've had a hard time finding definite info about how to run one through my particular TV.

Of course I know my TV doesn't support HDR, which I wish I had known would be a bigger deal than I thought in 2014 when I got the TV, but oh well.

I don't have a receiver. The husband bought a HDMI from Best Buy that said would work. It's 18 Gbps. I hooked the player up with that to port 5.

Thing is, whenever I tried playing one of the 4k movies my tv doesn't recognize the source. I played with the settings, made sure deep color was off and all that. Still nothing. It will play blu-ray with no problem.

Do I have to upgrade my TV now? It's Vizio M-65 from last year.

Which HDMI cable make and model did you go with?

Does your TV and player have the latest firmware installed?

If so, it may be the cable. Try a Certified Premium 18 Gbps cable from Monoprice or Belden Series-FE cable from Blue Jeans Cable. Both seem to work fine.

I'll check the firmware on both. This cable will go back and I'll check into the others. Thanks!

Pretty sure it's the cable so I've already ordered one from Monoprice.

Anyway, just a bit of a review from what I have watched. I started with the restored Spartacus blu-ray and I was a bit meh on that one. Probably because the picture was already pristine to begin with. Then it was Nightmare Before Christmas and wow, were we blown away. It looked fantastic.

I've never cared to watch Netflix on the Vizio TV since it just didn't look that great. So, I watched Netflix through this player and the difference was night and day. Excellent PQ.

It's odd to me that an HDMI cable can make such a huge difference when playing 4k movies. I can wait a day or two either way.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the player despite the small bump in the road. I'm one that's never satisfied and if the Monoprice HDMI cable fixes the issue, it'll be one of the times I feel like I can be totally happy with the current setup. That means the husband will be happy that I'm not eyeing anymore thousand dollar TV's...well, at least for a while.

I've had nothing but issues trying to get everything setup properly with 4k in general, not just this player. I tried to have everything routed through my Onkyo (plugged in to the correct port using high speed cables) and i kept getting drop outs. So i switched to using two cables, one to the player, one to the TV (Vizio M). Now I'm getting "no source" when i go to play the movie (sound is working). Its hooked to the 4K @60 port in the back of the vizio; get nothing. HDR is off. 24fps conversion is off. What gives? It was working at first.

I read at AVS that changing the picture mode to computer can resolve it. There were a few other changes in the settings as well. One was turning deep color off. I tried these last night, but it kept saying "no source". I do think it's the HDMI cable that's causing this for the most part, but won't know for sure until the new one I ordered comes in.

We have a M series Vizio from last year and I'm not running anything through a receiver. Hopefully, getting a Monoprice cable solves our issues.

So I turned off "Movie Frame (24Fs)" and I think I've made some progress. So far It's playing and I havent had any dropouts. We'll see if i can make it through a whole movie.

Decided to keep the cheap 4k set my wife got me for Christmas and figured why not and grabbed one of these today so I can watch 4k discs. My TV's HDR is pretty limited by a low 450 nits brightness, but it's a 10-bit panel at least. No handshake issues so far, watched some Star Trek Into Darkness and it looked pretty darn good, though I am (predictably) worried about it being too dark. Haven't even started playing with settings though.

The uhd picture at times seems dark and muted. Alot of people use the dynamic picture mode on the k8500. Might wanna at least give it a try and see how she looks.

Thanks for that, didn't even look at that "tools" button. Dynamic is interesting but seems sharpened and color-boosted to me. There's a custom option though that lets you boost HDR contrast alone, which lets you make it a LOT brighter. Of course you're also making it darker. Fun fun.

I can see why reviews and forum reactions seem so dependent on settings.

When I had the k8500, I used custom as well. I'd go as high as 8 with some uhd blu rays and bumped color up a couple notches too.

Has anyone here had both the Samsung K8500 and Philips 7501 but prefered the Samsung? Can you tell me why?
