I guess you cant please everyone. Sounds like others are going in and just complicating things. I now have watched 2 uhd titles and 2 blu rays.
The picture is wonderful. Will continue to buy uhd films from here on out.
Especially 4k shot. Chappie and Hancock are next.

Look at James Cameron's Avatar and Titanic in 1.85 without much cropping from the sides). The BIGGER the image, the better 4K looks!
I've enjoyed black bars in 3D films when they have used them to enhance the 3D effect, such as in Life of Pi when the flying fish come out of the black bars, that was a very nice touch.

Shame there's no 3D 4k content though. I guess 3DBD discs will work in 3D on the sammy? Anyone tried out a 3D disc yet?

Let me tell you, I'm reading the last 5-6 pages of the Owner's Thread over on AVSForum - fascinating stuff going on over there, both good and bad.

Everyone seems to have positive impressions of the image quality, but frustrated over the setup necessary to maximize image quality.

Which initially was the exact opposite of CinemaScope presentation's intentions. It would be nice to see more 21:9 TVs on the market to show off bigger pictures.

Good to here. I guess 3D BD plays in full 1080p now?

I kind of wish that the UHDBDs were bundled with 3D versions where applicable, going to suck having to buy the UHDBD and a separate 3DBD if you want to see it in 3D too.

(not directed at you personally)

Whatever aspect you pick on your TV it will always be a compromise between the three most common aspects, to simplify; "Academy", "Widescreen" and "Scope".

I picked a 16:9 framed canvas for my projection, because I watch lots of Academy ratio stuff as well. Sure, ~1.78:1 looks bigger on the screen, but the Scope ratio looks perfectly fine and I've never been distracted by black bars, not even back on my 4:3 TV. To me it's all about OAR.

How you consume your movies is none of my business, but cropping away content that is supposed to be seen is not the way of a film enthusiast, my two cents worth. Warner distributed 16:9 pan & scan version of Branagh's "Hamlet" is one of the major reasons I stopped watching movies on broadcast TV (2006-ish). This was of course before I got into HD.

Give me physical media anyday over streaming because I am one finicky videophile wanting my images to look their best.
Streaming is fully capable of producing rival quality as long as the providers do their jobs correctly and your internet connection can support it. I honestly wanted this to be the year I began to go "all digital" with my brand new 4K set and my 200/20 connection. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that was not the case when my rentals from Ultraflix were both underwhelming in quality and cropped to 16:9. Ugh.

All but about 98% of it. How far back will they go with HDR, about 2 years? Definitely not interested in classics with HDR, nor even more recent movies like TDK Returns or Avatar. That would be revisionist. So HDR is for new movies only. I watch a lot of new movies when a new format comes out, but after the eye candy loses its novelty, the vast majority of my viewing is older movies.

On streaming; technology is a few steps ahead of streaming all the time it seems. Internet capacities that match BD or UHDBD bitrates is not commonplace, and the providers will not stream with anything that'll match physical media.

I don't think disc is in any way less convenient. But then I only watch movies on 117" projected canvas. Watching them on a smaller screen than my 46" will never happen (again).

If all I want to do is rent, sure streaming will be fine. But when it comes to my collection - I want the best PQ/AQ available, and streaming ain't it.

Same here. I'm very pleased with my player and that 2K UHD BD looks much better than I thought it would. Very excited to watch more content, especially native 4K.

Everything about the broadcast system is ****ing pathetic, from its usage of the MPEG-2 codec to the low bitrates resulting in macroblocking galore that we've had to put up with for over a decade now. I have seen so many incompetent broadcasts it's insane.

I know the deep color setting on the player but what is the other feature you are referring to?
Dark setting?

Has anyone tried playing a regular DVD in the player yet to see how the upscale looks?

No problem with Deep color set to auto on my K8500 and my Sony 850C.

I can't wait until I get more UHD BD titles to try out. I picked up Kingsman today and I'm amazed at how much more detail is there. Between that and HDR it looks fantastic. If Kingsman is actually a 2K master then I can't wait until I see a UHD BD from a real 4K master.

Ironically it seems to be the people with Samsung UHD TVs that are having issues with the Samsung K8500.
