Hopefully legal stuff will be documented too.

I would love to see everyone who screwed up big time ends up getting theirs.

Thing the bigger question is why would they open? They gonna have 10 screens showing TROLLS 2? Everything else has been delayed for months/years.

That comment was intended to frame it from the perspective of the people who'd never even think of stooping that low to work, yet as I am one of said mongs anyway it makes me perfectly qualified to comment thusly. But clearly I've misread the room so I apologise for offending anyone, although...

....leaving all the jabs aside at who does what and why, from looking at this as dispassionately as possible it may well prove that people's lives will have to be permanently adjusted on a massive scale, not that they haven't already. It's an incredibly sobering thought for everyone with businesses to run, livelihoods and lifestyles to maintain, kids to rear, debts and mortgages to be paid, cars to be gassed up etc, so pretty much the majority of the human race then. But it's something we'll have to confront if it comes to it.

And yet, for the world-class idling I've done on this and other forums I've still ended up being classed as a "key worker" on the front line of this brave new world of ours. Go figure.
I did not know you worked at a supermarket, but even then there will be people that do that kind of work because they have no other options, and some that will do it out of choice, I know my local Tesco express employs a lot of older workers because they find them more reliable, and I guess I just do not see jobs in order of value, sure there is a money difference across the board, but they all have their own benefit to society imho.

When I visited Japan I remember learning that generally speaking everyone's job is held in the same regard - a doctor the same as a janitor. And the people that work take pride in their job, again, regardless of what it is. Being a cultural thing.

Maybe some of that mindset will rub off in the West when this is all over.

Maybe after this is all said and done it will create a fitness boom. 1/3 of the country is obese, which is the biggest contributor to a lowered immune system (other than old age). If it turns out that the coronavirus is what it took to lower the obesity rate, and even alcoholism and smoking (which are big contributors to hypertension, which happens to be the leading underlying cause of death from covid 19), and hence driving down health care costs and saving far more lives than the virus caused, then it will not have been all for naught. Just trying to find some silver lining, but as usual I'm probably just being too optimistic.

PA stay-at-home order extended until May 8.

"On that date, plans are for the state to reopen gradually. Social distancing guidelines and limits on large gatherings will be in place during the process"

The article specifically says they do not know exactly why that is, as they admit themselves that the N95 masks do in fact filter much better than the surgical masks. But again, in real life practice, not in controlled test labs, multiple studies have shown that surgical masks are effective against the flu and COVID-19.

https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/...n-coronavirus/

"Researchers in Canada randomly assigned 446 nurses to wear N95 or surgical masks during a few months of cold and flu seasons (September to December). Then they tracked how many got the flu or a cold. Again, no significant difference! Both masks performed just as well at preventing the transmission of the viruses. Twenty percent of nurses wearing surgical masks got sick versus 22% wearing N95 masks."

"Researchers in Australia studied parents taking care of their children, who were sick with the flu. Because people often don’t wear masks at home (even around sick people), researchers could defensibly randomly assign people to wear masks or not. They randomly assigned parents to wear no mask, a surgical mask, or an N95 masks like the one I’m wearing here. Then they tracked how many parents got the flu. Compared to parents not wearing masks, parents wearing surgical masks had 27% odds of getting the flu versus 24% wearing N95 masks (called “P2” masks here). Thus, masks seemed to work! But again, surgical masks were just as effective as N95 masks. And the effect size was fairly large—75% reduction in infection risk. The table above reports hazard ratios, not raw percentages. In raw percentages, 17% of all participants got sick versus 5% among surgical masks and 4% wearing N95 masks."

"How on Earth Could Surgical Masks Work as Well as N95 Masks at Capturing Viruses"

"OK, at this point, there must still be some skeptical readers out there. There’s no way that surgical masks can capture particles that small! I saw a doctor on Quora say that “most masks” can’t capture particles the size of viruses. But when we ignore our intuition and look at actual test data, reality is far more interesting. Test data shows surgical masks are surprisingly effective, even for tiny particles. For example, in one study, researchers tested particles down to .007 microns (even smaller than viruses) and found that a simple surgical mask blocked 80%. So it’s downright surprising that surgical masks are just as effective! Maybe virus particles are actually easy to capture because they fly on water droplets. Or maybe mask usage prevents people from touching their mouth and nose. For now, I can only speculate.

Bottom line: There’s scientific evidence finding that (1) masks prevent flu infection and (2) surgical masks prevent infection of viruses like the coronavirus (Covid-19), as well as more sophisticated N95 masks."

I posted a claim and followed it through with a link to an article which highlights several studies and their conclusions.

None of this matters much anyways since none of us can buy surgical masks now or anytime soon. And home-made cloth masks are nowhere near as effective as surgical or N95 masks.

Obviously N95 are more effective. My guess is to why the results showed the same effectiveness, is because most of the benefit is preventing the larger droplets, which even a handkerchief can do. And the surgical mask still blocked 81% of the micron particles, vs 95% for the N95 masks. That difference was not enough to show up in the results. Just because a few more micron particles get through, it's probably not enough to launch an infection. I'm sure if the sample size was larger than the N95 would have been shown to be more effective in the end.

For the general public, aerosol infection isn't a big concern, especially outside where the air dilutes it immediately. Even inside the risk is low unless the place is full of people and the air is not circulating well. For example singing in a church releases a lot of vapor and that's why it should be curtailed when churches open back up. A lot of cases blew up from church going, and I think it was the singing that spread it more than anything.

But generally any face covering will provide good protection from large droplets and according to the scientific test done by that site you quoted, even a handkerchief blocked 28% of microns. So even with aerosols, it's better than nothing. And I don't think that site is trying to promote face coverings.

Not required outside if you can maintain a 6 foot distance at all times. Of course in dense areas like Manhattan it would probably be impossible to go outside without a mask for more than 30 seconds without violating the 6 foot rule. So joggers in Central park will have to wear a mask now. I'll bet the regulars there are going to love that.

Fine by me. Just going back the theater will help bring some sense of normalcy. The only thing is if I'll ever feel normal wearing a face covering there. I would bring the most breathable one I can find.

On second thought, who is going to want to go to theater if you have to watch a movie with a mask on? Maybe they'll require it until you're seated?

I've never seen a jogger with a face mask on. I don't even know how they would do it. I'd be dying.

I tried, it sucked. Fortunately, my community has wide streets, and it's easy enough for me to just make my way to the other side to give people well over six feet.

Singapore was getting lots of praise for how they combated the virus, and some speculated that perhaps it's because of their hot and humid weather, but right now they have a huge surge of cases. The same places that were calling them a success story are now saying they're a "cautionary tale".

How Singapore Flipped From Virus Hero to Cautionary Tale

Quote:
In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, Singapore was a global standard bearer for taming the deadly illness. Now it’s home to Southeast Asia’s largest recorded outbreak and is racing to regain control.

Many governments have been caught out by the unexpectedly infectious pathogen, with opportunities for early containment lost as patients were sent home instead of being immediately tested and quarantined.

But unlike other Asian nations such as South Korea, some health experts say Singapore was slow to revise a response plan honed during its experience in 2003 with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS. That strategy saw the nation focus on hunting down people who had come into contact with an infected person, a classic public health approach known as contact tracing.

Covid-19 -- highly contagious and manifesting in some with little or very mild symptoms -- has turned out to be “nothing like SARS,” said Jeremy Lim, an adjunct associate professor at the National University of Singapore’s Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.

“The old playbook has to be thrown out and a new one written,” he said. “The difficulty for countries including Singapore is that one needs to write the playbook as they execute measures. It’s like the metaphor -- fixing an aeroplane’s engine while mid-flight.”

Singapore is now entering the third week of a partial lockdown it calls a circuit breaker. Social gatherings are banned and only essential businesses are allowed to operate. Schools are now shut, as well. The implementation has been unusually bumpy for a country used to being lauded as being efficiently run and whose citizens are known to be law-abiding. The penalty for flouting new social-distancing rules on the first offense went from a warning to a $300 fine within days, and just before the lockdown started, the government banned all personal gatherings after earlier only prohibiting those of more than 10 people.

I've seen some here in Marin, but where I was running it wasn't necessary. Even a few cyclists going uphill. I haven't tried it, but I don't think a single layer face covering will block air flow that much and will still stop the large droplets. I may try it myself just out of curiosity, but only for the easy runs (which is over 80% of my mileage anyway).
