I have the original 4K release when it first released in the UK - am guessing I have the disc missing the fade - does the recent Feb 2021 UK standard 4K release have the fade corrected please? (Did this affect both the 4K and 1080p discs, or just the 4K disc please?)

Okay so I've received the new UK 2021 release today.
Haven't had a chance to check the new disc yet for the fade BUT can confirm the disc itself is different to the original UK release as below (new one is on the right): DSC_1161~2.jpg EDIT: Can also confirm the 1080p blu rays look different - on the original release they had blue colour but now they are black. |

Can confirm both 4K disc and 1080p blu ray have the fade fixed on the new 2021 standalone UK release.

Did you notice the aspect ratio changed a bit between the 2007 edition vs. the 2018 one (Blu-ray/4K)?
![]() ![]() Am I to assume the new edition is better in this regard? Also, I was going to post a few caps here, but even caps-a-holic is already showing that: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=12...3&i=10&l=0&a=1 My first conclusion is that the 2018 edition is showing us a more bluish tone, so even if we all agree the old was inferior, it's undeniable almost every scene in the 2018 edition seems to be pervaded by a filter of a specific background color. For example, look at this one: ![]() ![]() Before I proceed I want you to look into this link: https://theailearner.com/2019/01/30/...ge-processing/ The word we are looking for here is CONTRAST. The 2007 edition seems to suffer from GLOBAL ENHANCEMENT because the picture appears to be too bright, and comparing the two I can tell from here the globe loses details that are better revealed in the 2018 one. But at the same time I am not pleased with the new transfer, because while it is sharper I can't help but feel every single detail of this scene has the same color. How so? The objects of the scenario + skin color all have the same darker tone infused to them. So why they couldn't do that yet at the same time leave Dr. Heywood's shirt looking EXACTLY like before, with more pronounced colors? That's what I never understand about these transfers. Another example: ![]() ![]() In the end... the colors appear to shift as this scene progresses. I can see the contrast issues with the 2007 edition, yet I have to ask if the change in Dr. Bownman's shirt from blue to a darker one was meant to correct that scene because before that moment it appeared to be darker in the old Blu-ray: ![]() Meaning the 2018 one actually corrected this. You could also argue the old transfer conveyed the idea these scenes were too light, too bright, and the skin colors were yellowish and all of this looked wrong. I would agree with that if were not for the same question I asked before: Was this and other scenes supposed to appear darker? Because IT IS darker now in the new edition. Is all I am saying just a matter of calibrating the 2018 edition so the contrast and colors would look similar to the old one, which did things wrong because already did that for us on default (so with the 2007 Blu-ray we actually need to do the opposite, reduce it)? A few more caps: ![]() ![]() ******* ![]() ![]() OLD = green Moon But the NEW transfer needed to correct the sky, it appears to be lighter when it should have been darker like it is in the old disc (see above). 1. The radical change in colors is because the old restoration was to make the movie look great on a TV, while the new restoration was designed to be faithful to the negative and the theatrical prints.
2. The cropped aspect ratio is weird, since this release was taken from the original 65mm negative. It was scanned at 8K, and it was restored at either 4K or 8K, and that digital master was used for this release. While the original aspect ratio of the negative was clearly 2.39:1, why they chose not to include it is beyond me. The old Blu has more data, but the new Blu/4K has accurate colors. 3. I never noticed a problem with the fading, and I’ve had my 4K since August 2019. Then again, I grew up on the ancient Beta of 2001, so almost anything is an improvement on that. 4. My 4K randomly started freezing and skipping, even though the disc is spotless. Any idea why? |

5-perf 65 is something like 2.29 on the negative itself, but it’s framed for the projection aspect of 2.20. I recall it being said somewhere that as the old Blu was sourced from a 35mm IP reduction it included more picture area than it should’ve done.

I just found a few explanations for the AR, as Geoff pointed out before:
http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/amk/doc/brown1.html https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/2001-...224399/#Review (...) As is documented in an actually fascinating two page "history" of the restoration provided by Warner's Stuart Herriott for this release, "the 2018 release contains correct picture aspect ratio as it was scanned directly from the 65mm original negative which is spherical (flat) versus anamorphic (scope). The 35mm anamorphic (scope) reduction that was scanned for the 2000 and 2007 releases contained a little more information on the left and right of the frame then [sic] was intended for 2.2 70mm projection aspect ratio. Also, the optical scope reduction added a slight amount of linear image distortion, which is not present in the 65mm spherical camera negative." (...) |
