For what purpose?

If you listen to them, it's pretty obvious. Dialogue is direction in the 1968 mix and centred in the 1999 mix.

IndieWire: ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ VFX Pioneer Douglas Trumbull Was “Flabbergasted” When WB Chose Christopher Nolan to Oversee a 70mm Restoration

Quote:
Trumbull feels a little miffed at not being asked to help out:

“…I was kind of flabbergasted because I had a previous intimate relationship with Warner Bros. about 2001 because I was developing [a] documentary [about that film] for them. At the time, I said, ‘I know where the original negative is of everything. I’m a guy who was on the set, working with Kubrick, and I’d love to contribute to any restoration you want to do.’ Instead, they called Christopher Nolan and they did not call me. Go figure. It’s all corporate. All about money.”

“There was work done on Blade Runner that made the movie better, and I helped them, because I had 65mm negatives of all the effects shots stored away that I gave to the studio,” he continued. “Generally, these restorations are not done by the principles who made the movie, particularly the cinematographers."

Basically they had no choice. Nolan is Warners' golden goose and when he said he wanted to oversee it, that was that.

Can someone (COUGH-Geoff-COUGH) remind me which is the safest one to get with the fade intact please? I'm scouring eBay and Amazon (UK) and can't see the big babies for the star childs.

Seriously, though, anyone who does know the definitive answer please do tell, cos it's doing my nut in.

I know the Titans of Cult Steelbook restores the fade. WB UK also re-released the UHD a couple of months ago without the tat, so I'd imagine it contains the corrected disc, but I'm not 10000% sure.

But Nolan wasn't involved with the 4K AFAIK, just the creation of those "unrestored" 70mm prints, complete with "glorious" printed in film tears, because Kubrick totally would have wanted that! If Nolan had been put in charge of the UHD, we probably would have gotten an IP scan instead of the original A/B roll 65mm negatives, to boot.

The trouble with the UK side of things is that there was never a replacement, officially or unofficially, as Warners UK denied there was even a problem while other Warners subsidiaries in other countries were busy sending out replacements! Although the UK Titans of Cu*t version did indeed carry the corrected discs AFAIK, there’s no guarantee of getting the corrected platters if you buy the regular UK version. (Edit: Don’t mean to undermine dally's post here, I didn’t see his comment before posting this)

Me, I took a punt on the German and French editions instead and they both came with corrected discs.

I heard differently re: Nolan's involvement with the video transfer. No, it’s not from an IP but the spotty DNR and excruciatingly thin blacks are redolent of how Nolan treated his own movies on UHD.

Trumball's comments in the original indiewire interview re: HFR are very intersting. He talks about inserting black frames in between real frames to recreate the shutter effect of traditional film projection to elliminate the dreaded "live TV/motion interpolation" effect. I've wondered in the past if something like this might be the key to making digital HFR "work", as I had seen a 70mm Showscan presentation (70mm film projrected at 60 FPs), as well as Universal's 70mm T2 3-D attraction (again, 60 FPS 70mm), and both times the great improvement in motion was obvious, yet neither time did I recoil in disgust like shutterless HFR digital presentations have made me do.

I'm pretty sure it was 60 FPS. I used to have the American Cinematographer that had an article about.its making and read it many times.

Wikipedia says 30 FPS but my memory of that AC article was that it was 60 FPS. Gotta track down that article now...

Just re-read the article, Russell Carpenter says they shot at 30fps.

Keep an eye out for the red dot on the back, obviously you can’t tell when ordering from afar but if it’s there then it’s the corrected version.

Faulty memory on my part then!

I stil think Trumball's idea of recreating the "shutter effect" of film projection with HFR digital has merit and should be explored, though.

Didn't the corrected disk come with a red bar code instead of the usual white ?
