IS the PCM in game actually better than the DD would be? I know some games (Resistance) support uncompressed sound, but games like that are not what I'm referring to. Any help would be sorely appreciated.

Because it's still sending out those codecs via PCM. Lossy or not, they're all being decoded by the PS3. If you want, you can change to Bitstream for games so the little lights come up on the receiver, but it's all the same sound in the end.
