Quick question though- Have my PS3 set to Linear PCM and I let the PS3 automatically search for and select the audio codecs. Blu-rays sound wonderful, and the PCM indicator is on (as it should be) for uncompressed blu-rays. But I am having a problem with the PS3 games...they sound fine, but when I play Dolby Digital enabled games (which almost all of them are) and DTS games (EA), the PCM indicator is still showing. Shouldn't the DD or DTS symbol be showing while playing game? Why PCM? Should I leave it as is, or should I be switching an option to enable the DD? IS the PCM in game actually better than the DD would be? I know some games (Resistance) support uncompressed sound, but games like that are not what I'm referring to. Any help would be sorely appreciated.
Because it's still sending out those codecs via PCM. Lossy or not, they're all being decoded by the PS3. If you want, you can change to Bitstream for games so the little lights come up on the receiver, but it's all the same sound in the end.

I'm trying to decide between multiple receivers and going crazy like most of you here!

I don't want to spend a fortune but want good quality.

My system.......Thiel CS1.6 (mains)......Thiel SCS2 (center).....Atlantic Tech 250w 12" powered sub.....Mirage Omnipolar surrounds.......I am using an Acurus 3 channel amp via preouts for the front channels and the receiver's power for the rears only. Works great with my Denon AVR-3300.

Blu-Ray source is the PS3

Narrowed down to:

Yamaha 663 - downside is only 2 HDMI inputs
Yamaha 863 - 3 HDMI's are nice, but is it worth $400 more?
Pioneer 1018 - looks very nice for the price.
Denon 3808 refurb (ecost if they ever get any more)

Not out yet:

Pioneer Elite 01
Pioneer Elite 03
Denon 1909
Denon 2309CI

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Easy. How many HDMI inputs do you really need?

only 2? Get the Yamaha 663.

> 2 ? Get the Pioneer 1018. It has 3 HDMI inputs.

Otherwise, you can't go wrong with any of these that you listed.

I posted this on a separate thread but thought I might get more responses from other 663 users.

I have a S350 player.

For the V663 I have not adjusted any of the factory settings except the speaker setup. I don't think I need to adjust anything?

When playing a Blu Ray DVD with 5.1 uncompressed (48/24) audio my receiver shows PCM, no decoder indicators, with the ability to change sound field programs. Is this the correct setting/display for this audio codec? I am using the Scene template for DVD viewing (Playback Mode = Straight). Again are these settings correct? Any advice on set up would be great!

The sound is great just want to make sure my settings are optimal.

I would like to see a picture of your system one day (so would Beta Man since he likes Thiels). If you can, post a picture in the Home Theater pictures thread . By the way - all of those receivers are solid sonic choices.

I think I have my 350 settings correct? There is no direct bitstream setting. The Audio (HDMI) setting is set to Auto which looks to be the correct setting. The other is 2ch PCM.

Yes, use Straight when playing back BD movies, and you'll be getting the best SQ from all 5.1/7.1 multichannel sources.

If your S350 is playing LPCM tracks or decoding DD TrueHD, or any of the lossy DD or DTS formats, your player's output is PCM and your V663 is only going to display PCM because it can't tell what the original format was. I don't have a S350 (yet that is), but I would think if you set it to bitstream, you will see the respective source displayed on the V663. Also you should be aware that you can only decode DTS-HD MA in the V663, the S350 doesn't decode that format but rather sends it to the V663 over HDMI 1.3 to let it do the decoding. So, you'll definitely want your S350 set to bitstream DTS-HD MA.

What are those 6 white ovals on top of your reciever?
Are they velcro tabs keeping a piece of plexiglass over the vents?

OK i just bought this baby today to replace my onkyo 905 because i've gone through a 605, 705, 805 and 905's & they all overheight even on open shelves. i had them all fixed and then it was something else so i'm done with onkyo. i got this yamaha and i cannot get it to play on multi channel, i cant figure this out and the manual truly sucks. i have 1.3 hdmi from receiver out to tv in and hdmi from ps3/360 to rec. how can u use the multi channel? I have ps3 on linear pcm and turned off upconversion on the receiver. still cant get dolby hd or true masters. only regl d/d 5.1. does anyone know how to mess with this annoying receiver?

the PS3 will never display "TrueHD" on your receiver. It will only show up as Multichannel PCM.

This is because it is being decoded inside the PS3 first.

Also make sure you are selecting the correct audio track on the movie itself. Then hit the "display" or "select" button on the PS3 remote, this will show you what audio is being played.
