So, my dad owns the Integra DTR-6.5 and I was wondering if this receiver would be a significant upgrade? One of the main problems that I was looking at is the lack of HDMI inputs in the Integra. He just got a blu ray player and samsung, so do you think it's worth it?

Just picked this receiver up today. A little Christmas gift from me (or actually best buy, you can read the story in my "new" gallery) to me. Can't wait to set it up, but will probably do it tomorrow. Any initial set-up pointers would be greatly appreciated. I have read through the entire thread, so I think I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing...but just in case I missed somthing!

Well since you have the PS3... Make sure you set the PS3 audio to linear pcm, hook it up to the 663 with HDMI, set your 663 audio to Straight, do a YPAO calibration with your setup mic, pop in a blu-ray and enjoy.

Very helpful and insightful thread, wish I would have read it sooner!
I a am a proud owner of a Yamaha RX-V663, have been since the week they came out, and I must say, I love it! Besides my Pioneer plasma, it's the best HT purchase I've ever made!

Which setting is the best for keeping the best original sound for uncompressed audio: Natural, Front, or Flat? I only ask because one of those must be chosen using the auto calibration.

While NATURAL might be the best, he won't know for sure whether it is or isn't until he runs his own listening tests on the other two settings.

I think the PEQ setting depends on the speakers, room size, the acoustical environment (highly reflective surfaces or dead like a padded cell or any where in between), and subjectiveness (listener's preferences). For my system, I finally settled on PEQ = FRONT because my Energy towers set the pace for the whole system. I liked the EQ of the other speakers especially the center channel set according to front the towers. The dialogue was clear and distinct. I tested all three PEQ settings. The second best was FLAT. NATURAL just didn't sound as natural as the other two EQ choices to me in my listening room. The subwoofer level was set too high. Movie dialogue wasn't as distinct as it was with FLAT and FRONT. However, I think the results will vary for others. The only way to find out is to run listening tests for all three PEQ settings. That way you won't be settling for less when another PEQ setting is better.

Tilapiah my advice is to at least verify that NATURAL really is the best setting for your HT system after doing some listening tests on your own, based on your preferences when comparing all three settings.

The Polk TSi 300's are the only speakers in my set up as of now (except for 2outdoor speakers attached to zone b). After attaching the TSi 300's to the v663 and running the auto set up, it almost sounds as if only the highs are coming out of my right front and the mids & lows are coming out of the left. The right speaker sounds crisp and the left muddy. Did I do something wrong? Could the left speaker have a defect? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.
Try running the auto set up again and make sure that no one is in the room and that its totally quiet when you are doing it.

Try the speaker connections...are you using banana plugs?

Has anybody here tried using presence speakers? I may do that after my sub gets here because I see no point in having bi-amped fronts if all of the bass is going to the sub.

Bi-amping is more than just helping out the low end, friend.

And while I don't know about that feature personally, one of my dealers commented on it being just another useless gimmick.

Question V663 and Sony BDP-S350 TrueHD Question

I've read a lot of traffic on PS3 and the V663, iPod docks, etc., but I am having troubling figuring out/understanding the concept of TrueHD, dts Master Audio, etc. and the V663 with a Sony BDP-S350. No matter what I do, the only audio indicator light that shows on the receiver is PCM. Here are the details...

The S350 is connected to the V663 via an HDMI cable. The S350 is setup as follows:
Audio Output Priority: HDMI
Audio (HDMI): Auto
BD Audio Setting: Mix
Audio ATT: On
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
DTS: DTS
48KHz/96kHz: 96kHz/24 bit
Audio DRC: Auto
Downmix: Dolby Surround
The V663 receiver is setup as follows (Manual Setup):
Input Menu --> Input (F) DVD
I/O Assignment: HDMI In [1]
Decoder Mode: Auto
Honestly, I consider myself a tech-geek, but I really don't understand half of what is listed above. I'm just trying to determine if I have the best settings for the best sound. I have verified the obvious, such as that the BluRay movie supports TrueHD, etc. and that the movie setup is correct. Can't really screw anything up with the cables, since there is only the one HDMI cable. I've even switch out HDMI cables. Both components are new. The firmware in the S350 is up-to-date. I'm out of ideas. Any insight into proper configuration between these two components would be greatly appreciated!

Turn Audio (HDMI): Auto to Bitstream. Turn off DRC. It'll light up your receiver appropriately.

Thanks for the quick reply. The problem is, the "Audio (HDMI)" option only provides options for "Auto" and "2ch PCM" and the "Audio DRC" option only provides "Auto", "Standard", "TV Mode" and "Wide Range". I tried a couple of combinations, but no luck. I did RTFM, but it's really no help. If you have any other suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it (or anyone else who may have solved this problem) - otherwise, I have 5 days left to troubleshoot before the return period is up on this receiver.

I personally do not have the Sony 350, but it seems to me I read somewhere that to get the 350 to bitstream you have to have it set to "Direct" on the setup menu of the player. I could be wrong though, just thought I'd try to help.
