Toefer...

Re-publish your levels every 5-10 minutes constantly (no matter what page they are on) and you can get a lot of page 1 hits and get your hearts much faster. You gotta re-publish like a mofo if you want any attention for your work otherwise it will appear at one second on page 3, for example, and be off the grid completely (not on any of the 50 pages) within an hour or less they move down so fast... especially now.

I solo'd all the 3x/4x coop stuff in the game just using controllers at home. The Frozen Tundra was tricky because of the wheels but I had a few good thick rubber bands that made it work! If anyone needs help, though, just invite me if you see me on and I'll run it with you. I'm still spamming hearts on everything my friends list people publish when I see them (like the new maze btw Toefer) but Creator hearts are a PITA.

Congrats! Now you can help me by playing and hearting my levels.

I just put a fourth level up called "Obstacle Course." It is basically GUTS! but due to the copyright stuff I couldn't name it that. I borrowed some of the events, some of the notable ones like Slam Dunk and Earthquake. And obviously, there's some Aggro Cragging at the end.

It was kind of rushed and is meant as a race. Heart it and enjoy!

Haha, funny - of course, LBP does take attention away from the ladies. . .

Well, I'm within hours of publishing my second level. Still playing through it myself and tweaking/fixing things I come across. I'm right at the threshold of the themometer, it keeps saying I've overheated, but then goes back down one degree - I've been putting in more things like this for the last day - sooner or later I'm sure I won't be able to add one more thing.

I'm not sure what people will think of it. Heck, I'm not sure what I think of it.

Problem is, there was no way to properly tell the story in one level - so this one basically turned out as an introduction to all the bad guys with a sample of their levels to come. I plan to make each bad guy with a smaller level which I'll provide a Key to in a few weeks.

I think I've bit off more than I can chew again.

Not sure if people will simply be annoyed that they don't "beat" anybody.

Could be a disaster.

You should just call it Intestines, and I'm sure people would get the reference.

Thanks for the tip. I'd been republishing 2-3 times a day, usually, but since I have nothing to do today but hang Christmas lights, I might try republishing every hour or two. Someone left a comment on one of my levels yesterday, along the lines of "nice...the good ol' republishing scam". I deleted the comment, but by the time I republish a few times today, it won't even be in the last 10 comments (or however many it shows). I figure once I get the plays up to an amount I'm fine with, which will keep the level around (hopefully) that I can just stop republishing, and eventually enough people will comment, to push out all of my "toefer: 8 minutes ago - Level was republished" "toefer: 1 hour ago - Level was republished" "toefer: 2 hours ago - Level was republished", etc. comments.

Do you ever struggle with your own levels or do you normally breeze right through them? I've been wondering that as I've played some of the tricky/complex levels. That is, wondering if the level creator has a hard time completing it or if it is easy for him/her.

Well, I test run again and again, and try to find the fine line between difficult and frustrating.

Usually, I've played it enough to know the timing needed, etc. - but I fine tune the hell out of it so people don't exit my level half way through cause they can't pass a section.

For instance, I have a part in my new level where Jack Frost forces you to race his cold air. You are jumping on/over all the frozen sack people who failed before you - I spent days on this, figuring out how to make it so you wouldn't fall and get stuck where you weren't meant to, fine tuning how fast the cold air appeared so you "had a chance".

It's amazing, I spent days on a 30 second scene.

I was shocked to find out how short my newest level is (although I filled the themometer), compared to the hours I put in. I believe many of those hours went into creating characters. It can be sooooo time consuming.

Anyway, yes, I find my first level (The Garden at Midnight) is difficult, but definitely beatable. I'm not a gamer, so, I know if I lower it down to my level it should be good for most people. I think some people make levels almost impossible sometimes - but I like to make levels I enjoy playing as well.

I haven't spent that long on a level yet, but I feel like I can relate.

Like you, I don't publish a level until it's completely done, because I don't see the point of releasing incomplete levels. That's not to say I don't feel tempted to. After spending a few hours making a level, I begin to just want some sort of feedback for it (not feedback as in comments, but feedback as in seeing people have played it).

On top of that, I really hate testing out my own levels, especially when I finally think they are complete. The last thing I want to do is play it and realize "wow, this isn't really worth playing" or find things just aren't working right. On the Presidential Race board, I had no problem making everything work individually, but when I finally tried to play through the entire completed level, things just started acting weird, and weren't doing what they were supposed to. Even once everything finally works, then there's still the potential letdown if you have it published for days and days, and nobody seems to be playing it.

So if I feel these ways after spending 6-8 hours making a level, I can only imagine what it'd be like if I spent more time.

I don't understand how people make levels so quick. I think I spend too much time with little details (camera angles, sounds, etc.) I've spent hours on my 4 villians - although, you wouldn't know it at all. They all look VERY simple, but it took forever to come up with something that "worked".

I was just within seconds of releasing my second level - I wanted to move one check point down just a bit and then I'd be done. I moved and - "CRACK". Something on my level broke. I flew around checking everything, and found a mechanism has disappeared. I did a rewind, but it just keeps breaking and disappearing.

These little glitches in the game are VERY annoying.

It sucks not having people play your level much, but I don't want to keep re-publishing (although I have recently with minor updates). I have 50 plays and 23 hearts for my first level.

I play mine extensively before release. I often find glitches - some from the game, and some from my design. I find issues in other people's levels - like dropping down somewhere with no way back up (poor design), or dropping down to a level before you were meant to (poor design). It can be more difficult than it looks to "make" a player go where you want them to go. (Unless it's just right to left).

Once my kid is done watching Blues Clues, I plan to get back on, fix that mechanism and publish "Part 1" of my holiday story. If I don't get many plays or hearts I don't think I'll bother finishing the story (this is just an introduction to the villians). I'll probably just unpublish it and keep it on my moon for myself. It's too much work to complete for only 50 people to ever play it.

Surprisingly, we don't seem to have a huge amount of people visiting this thread with discussion about creation. Really seems it's just a few of us.
People seem to stop in with "Play my level - here's the name" and then they never come back.

Damn, your level sounds like fun. I'll definitely have to check it out.

I have a small problem with 2 of my levels in that they may be too difficult... which is funny to me, as I use my skills at platforming as my litmus test. Basically, if I can beat my level anyone should be able to. I'm really not that good at platformers... If anyone wants to check them out and give me some feedback, the levels are Bitter Jungle 2.4 and Winter Games ver.1.3

I have a 3rd level up that I anxiously want people to check out as I spent literally days on one part... but more on that in the next post, as I really want to call attention to it.

Default Serenity/Firefly fans...

If you're a fan of Serenity/Firefly I urge you to check out my newest LBP level Adventure in the LittleBig'Verse.

Its not overly challenging, but I am proud of what i did in the middle section of the level. I spent a few days on the layout and construction, and I'm certain it's fairly close to scale. It's an amalgam of the movie version and multiple episode layouts. I was debating as to whether or not I was going to make the final build a reward, but eventually decided against it. It's big (really big), and considering the amount of time I invested in it, I felt the overall level challenge wasn't enough to warrant giving out my baby.

Hope you check it out and let me know what you think.

BTW, it was originally constucted out of metal, but considering what I wanted to do with it, I changed it all to cardboard. Even then it was too big and heavy for me to get it to fly on its own.

Well, I hope you keep your levels up at least long enough for me to play them. They sound interesting. Although, I know how you feel. "Bitter Jungle" is the level I had the least amount of time invested in (probably around the 30-40 hour mark) and "Adventure in the LittleBig'Verse" took me around 150 hours to complete (that's a guess, btw), so I understand what how you feel about time invested vs. number of plays. I think you should keep your levels up regardless of how many plays there are on it. The way I see it, people will eventually come around to it. I only republish levels when I've tweaked or changed something, and I find that the number of plays on my levels tends to creep upwards little by little, and they're slowly but surely gaining hearts, so someone must be liking them.

As for things breaking... holy crap is that the most annoying thing ever. The worst is when something on your level breaks and it begins a chain reaction that lays waste to large parts of your level. I've had that happen to me 3 or 4 times.
