R2 in the short term, LBP in the long term.

R2 is in a genre with many, many competitors on top of it KZ2 will make it look outdated months after it comes out. However, that genre probably has more fans than the user created content/platforming genre, so it will be an instant seller.

LBP is something special, nothing like it has been done before, it will have massive legs.

I don't think Little Big Planet will sell well at all. I think it deserves to, but so did Uncharted. I think Resistance will take this battle easily.

Default Jubei's right...

If you think LBP's numbers will come close to matching R2 (or even a 2nd rate FPS game) you are SERIOUSLY underestimating the American public's shallowness and preference for violence in its entertainment.

LOL at LBP winning 10-4 in this poll!

That being said, Media Molecule will at least get my money (plus I think LBP will be the better game).

Contrary to the 'hype' around first person shooters, the genre is actually quite a bit smaller than other game types.

I don't think there's any question in the marketing minds at Sony that LBP will not only outsell R2, but do it by a significant portion.

Casual gamers make up a LOT more of the buying public. Hardcore gamers (those more inclined to hype over 1st person shooters) are a much much smaller portion. Hence, we have the Wii... A massive step backwards in gaming console development and technology, yet, successful.

Would we really call Little Big Planet a casual game though? I've not seen anything to suggest that it'll be a game that has much appeal unless you're hardcore into editing, creating, sharing, platforming, etc. It seems like a really complex and overwhelming game to just pick up and play. I can't imagine it having any lasting appeal unless you're into that. I think it's a niche market game that will struggle to find an audience. Regardless, I'll enjoy the hell out of it.

I think in the long run LBP will sell more becuase it will gain a big fan base after its released because of everthing you can do within the game... BUt I will get R2 and during the fisrt few months R2 will blow LBP out of the water because R2 already has and established fan base who is itching to continue on there quest!!

Everybody's creative and we aren't all hardcore gamers. Everything is explained with narrated (video tutorials where needed) and the advertisements won't be making the game look overwhelmingly complex. If you can navigate YouTube, you won't have much difficulty getting your head around finding free levels in LBP and the whole commenting, rating community thing will draw more people in.

Of course we haven't seen what exactly Insomniac have in store for their 4th C: Community.

Proteus, per your own argument, you're saying R2 will sell a lot more copies than LBP. LBP is more hardcore/niche than R2 by far. Your average casual gamer will look at gameplay of each, say "wtf is this ****" to LBP and go with something more within their limited mental scope in R2 (still like R2, but I think that's the first time anyone's ever argued LBP is more for casual gamers than R2)

Wii is different because it's marketed to a more diverse group of individuals so you can't universally apply Wii rules to PS3/360 gamers who are generally made up of immature teenage boys.

It's like Devil May Cry (R2) vs. Klonoa (LBP). It's like Gears of War vs. Viva Pinata (which also benefited from having a TV show). I think you know who wins those sales battles.

The question should be - Over/Under on Resistance 2 outselling LBP by a 3:1 ratio

And not to get too cocky with my prediction but I would gladly bet anyone ANY amount of money that R2 will at least outsell LBP (short-term, long-term, whatever - there should be a lot of takers because LBP is winning this poll by a 2:1 ratio)

No one can answer this question in any meaningful way unless a time frame is set. Are we talking about 2 weeks, three months, a year, ....
Having said the above, here's my meaningless prediction.
I will put my money on LBP it has a very unique concept and will appeal to a wide audience, including girls and their moms. It combines the fun of playing with the fun of creating. Few other games offer that.
R2, as good as it is, will probably be a heavy hitter as well, but overall will likely lose the battle to LBP.

It seems a lot of people here are grossly misjudging the PS3 audience. This is not the same diverse group of moms, old folks, girls, young kids, young adults, etc. that makes Wii such a success. No offense against "us" but the current PS3 fanbase is primarily composed of relatively immature teenage boys and young men (okay, so you may have a job and a steady gf, but you know you're still pretty immature). And, despite how good LBP is or how much it is hailed as a creative masterpiece, it still will not win over your average PS3 user. Especially with more mainstream games in Resistance 2, Socom Confrontation, Fallout 3 and Motorstorm 2 all coming out within a week of two of LBP, it stands little chance of selling that well.

Like I said before, games with no violence will rarely ever compare (in sales) to your traditional beat-em-up/shoot-em-up. Plus, you take into account that the PS3 has a much less developed install base than the PS2 with less niche/"hardcore" (in terms of game sophistication) gamers and you know that LBP sales won't come close to matching R2.

You don't grab gamers without releasing games to grab them. The PS3 userbase is not static.
