![]() I had to end my first level cause I couldn't add anything else - so it ends with a motorcycle ride out of the level - definitely not what I envisioned. ![]() My second level is already 3/4 full and I've barely got half way where I wanted. Looks like I'll have to end this level early as well and provide a "Key" to a second level to continue/finish my simple story, just a bummer cause it messes up the flow. |

They weren't all bad, and some were quite good, but the NeoGAF isn't like a USDA Prime sort of mark of quality. |

I was toying with the idea of making a Double Dare obstacle course a few weeks ago, but saw that there were already a couple (though as of last night none of them had more than 40 plays, which means there's plenty of room for a good one to appear and crush the rest). Anyhow, I decided the first obstacle I'd work on was the balloon pit that they would jump in and run across. So I made small circular sponges (like in my Presidential Race level) and used all the basic colors I could find (pink, yellow, green, blue, red, and I think that was it). So after pasting 8-10 of each color ball on the back layer, I used the select tool to select all of them, and hit copy, and then pasted them to the middle layer...no problem. Copied another set to the front layer, and the thermometer overheated. So now the thermometer makes no sense to me. It's not like I was doing anything particularly crazy. It was just a bunch of circle sponges, all the same size, but in 5 different colors. I'm thinking that maybe it was the physics involved, since sometimes its not the amount of stuff in the level, as much as it is the amount of stuff in a small space. In other news, I'm closing in on 2,000 combined plays on my levels, with something like 220 hearts (I haven't checked since last night). Sadly still only 26 hearts as a creator, but I've wanted to earn them the legit way, and I'm sure I'll get there eventually. And still other news, I used to think that heart/play ratios mattered, but then I realized they don't make sense. You would think a 1:1 ratio is great, because everyone that played your level hearted it. But that also means everyone that hearted your level only played it once. So a ratio of 1:100 might mean it's bad (because nobody hearts it) but it could also mean its great and that the people who hearted it keep coming back and playing it again and again. I'm pretty sure the play count is not unique (like YouTube does it) where it only counts as 1 per person, regardless of how many times a person plays it. So a 500 play count means it was played 500 times, but that could be 500 times by 1 person, or 500 different people played once, or anywhere in between. Last edited by toef; 11-21-2008 at 05:44 PM. |

Anyway, I start building and the themometor sky rocketed in just a few pastes - I deleted it all, did it again and it's holding steady. WTF?! ![]() One thing that seems to really overheat the level quickly is adding in lots of "created objects". It seems that if you "build" many objects, it's not a huge deal, but if you build an object, save it, then start pasting it again and again your level starts to heat up quick. You noticed the same thing? |

i actually enjoyed the piston level. the LOTR one was pretty sweet too. i lack the "creativity" thing which is why i have yet to obtain my gold trophy. btw, if you just search for a person's name *i.e. SecretAgentHam* then all their levels come up, including the characters page. so why dont ya give me a search and play my 2 levels and hear me ? =D CMON!!!! lol

In my newest level (the Mega Maze Contest) I included a little mouse character that you have to carry with you (because he has an invisible magnet key attached to him, and makes the doors dissolve, for you to pass through). Along the way through the maze, you can "free" the 3 blind mice, who are all stuck. For the blind mice, I just copied 3 new copies of the mouse object I already created, but added a pair of sunglasses, and a number (so there's mouse 1, 2, and 3). So that wasn't a huge deal, I guess, because I was just using one object. So then I decided to give away each mouse as a prize, and saved each mouse separately, so that there are now four mice (Mr. Mouse, which is the one you carry, and then Hickory, Dickory and Doc, are the three blind mice). The way I set up the level, if you "rescue" one of the trapped mice, it makes a 2nd copy of them drop from a trap that's suspended near the finish gate, so that it looks like they met you there at the end of the level (kind of like the Collector's Lair level in story mode). So to do this, I loaded up each of the 4 mice in my custom stuff. And then to fill up the maze with random objects, so it didn't look so empty, I included (among a huge number of items) the original donkey and elephant shapes I made, for my Presidential Race level, and loading those up didn't have a huge effect either. On the other hand, to quickly get the trophy for creating a level with 2-players, and the gauge over 30%, I loaded up my donkey vehicle from the racing level, and pasted that. Then I copied it, and after making about 10-12 of those, the thermometer was already nearly full. So I'm completely confused. I used at least 6 different saved custom objects, and those had a negligible effect on the meter, and then another time I used 1 single object (the donkey car) a bunch of times, and that made the meter nearly overheat. The only thing I can think of is that my maze level is huge, and the objects are spread out, whereas in the level I made just to get a trophy (and then deleted) I put the donkey cars fairly close to each other (I was copying and pasting them as quickly as I could). So MAYBE having a lot of custom stuff located in a small area is what creates the problem, because maybe the server strains to try load up all these random objects someone made and saved on their profile, as opposed to spacing them out (so there aren't more than a couple on the screen at a time). I have no idea. Last edited by toef; 11-21-2008 at 06:22 PM. |

Got it.
![]() ![]() I know, me neither. ![]() It's just unfortunate that I have soooo much room left and a lot of story to cover and only 1/4 of the themometer left to use. Oh well, I'll have to try your maze level, sounds fun. (I keep meaning to send you a friend invite, but I keep forgetting). |

![]() I know what you mean. When making the maze level, I was worried I was going to fill up too much of the thermometer with just the maze, and not be able to set up the rest. You could obviously make a level by laying it all out in basic form first, so you know everything is there (characters, checkpoints, etc) and then flesh it out, but that just doesn't seem like a fun way to do it. If need-be, I could've scaled down my maze, but that would've been a bit depressing, because I spent quite a while drawing the entire thing out on graph paper, so that I could easily scale it up to size when making the level (each square of the graph paper I made equivalent to 9 squares -- 3 x 3 -- of the large grid size in LBP, and each line in the graph paper was 1 square of the large grid, so the 30x20 maze on graph paper turned into 121x81 squares in LBP...or something like that). Also, I just republished my levels, and saw that one is on Page 3 of the Cool Levels, so I'm wondering if I should just leave it there, or if it will disappear after a while. Not quite as great as a slot on Page 1, but it's something. |
