DVD suffered a bigger YOY drop than BD did, and I don't think they're also waiting for UHD.
![]() Physical video media is on an inexorable slide downwards, it's not going to wink out of existence overnight but UHD BD is becoming a harder sell by the day. |

Nobody is waiting for UHD BD. Well, people are but that's what's not causing the downward spiral of disc sales. We all know what's causing it, digital downloads and streaming services. Also, I can't remember what was released this same week last year, but maybe there were a couple of big releases that a lot of folks purchased which would also makes sales down from last year.

Frozen sold like crazy last year. Over 7 million copies and just over $149 million dollars. Surely that movie skewed the downward numbers for this year even though it was released in March of last year...I imagine it had good staying power for the year.

The biggest thing to fear is what impact 8K will have on 4K in 2 years when that's the next hotness driving TV sales.
Call me jaded (i really probably am) but this roller coaster of new $**! every 2 years is getting old really fast. How many new AVR's, New TV's, New Cables (I know we don't have to swap this go round), New Players, New Speakers, New Subs, etc do we have to go through until we get one "STANDARD" that is good enough to go a full decade. That Blu-ray release list may look impressive in isolation, but DVD releases 4 times as much. 10k per year for DVD vs. just over 2k for Blu-ray.
For example Warner Archive releases about 15-20 new-to-Blu movies a month, while Blu-ray only gets one. The TV show ratio is about 10:1 in favor of DVD. Probably the same for music and documentaries. At least with new release Blu-ray gets most of what get's released on DVD. |

Most of Blu-ray sales revenue comes from new and recent theatrical releases. Those movies generally aren't available on Netflix until the sell through well has run dry. Digital releases are being given early release windows over physical and that is especially taking its toll on Blu-ray because Blu-ray customers tend to be more tech saavy and thus more likely to make a digital purchase (than a DVD consumer is). Otherwise, Blu-ray sales wouldn't be declining at the same rate as DVD. |

Or they can wait for Netflix, Amazon Prime & others to get it digitally. Or they can get a UV, iTunes etc code from a friend digitally. Or they can skip all the above because they've seen the film theatrically. Now take all that ^ away from the Consumer & tell them to buy a $30 UHD Disc for 1 film. |

Because when Blu-Ray came out DVDs became less expensive due to the new format. It won't be overnight obviously, but Blu-Rays will have to be cheaper to differentiate the cost for UHD as a premium product over Blu-Ray. Of course this will depend on how much the public is willing to pay for UHD though.

4K is going to be a premium for remastering and very small sliver of the market catering to home theater snobs. I project it only cements current BD pricing for a few more years, and UHD comes in priced $10-15 higher than a BD counterpart currently does. |

Bluray has been out about 10 years and 4K is just now showing up. You dont have to upgrade every 2 years. I bought a 4K TV thats already obsolete (weird how thats even possible). Instead of chasing technology I've just accepted I wont have the latest and greatest gadget. Yes I'll have to drop some more cash on upgrading my receiver to accept 4K and Dolby Atmos, but thats about it. |
