Default Got my Onkyo SR605 hooked up!

Love it so far. Very cool receiver. This is what I have:

PS3 > HDMI > SR605
TWC Cable/DVR > HDMI > SR605
Wii > Composite > SR605
RCA SD DVD > Component > SR605
SR605 > HDMI > Philips 47PFL7422D/37 LCD TV
SR605 > JBL NSP-1 5-speaker system and JBL PB12 powered sub

Almost everything is working as expected, except this:

The RCA SD DVD going through component into the SR605 and then out through HDMI to the TV does NOT appear to be upconverted. The TV is receiving a 480p signal.

Likewise, the Wii coming in through composite into the SR605 does NOT appear to be upconverted as well. The TV says it's receiving a 480p signal (though it appears to be deinterlacing it since I think I had the Wii set to 480i output).

I thought that it is supposed to upconvert these signals. I've set the HDMI out to "YES" on the SR605. Am I missing something?

yep, there is a setting, but as I am at work, I don't have access to it
look arround, it says component upscale resolution, or something like that

Hmm, it must have been late, but I went through every menu on the SR605 and don't recall seeing one. I'll try again later. Thanks!

The Onkyo 605 does not upscale resolution, it only upconverts all signals to output via HDMI, but no resolution upconversion is done.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for clarifying. I took another look at the specs on the Onkyo website and it states:

Component Video Upconversion - check
Analog to HDMI Upconversion - check
480i to 480p processing - check
1080p upscaling - NO check

Thanks again. Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss a setting or feature.

Ooh, wait. I just saw this on CNETs site:

We didn't have much luck using the 720p upconverting (we found it messed up the aspect ratio), but here's the trick to activate the secret menu:

1. Hold down the Aux button on the front panel of the receiver.
2. While holding down Aux, press Power.
3. The LED display should read "Resolution: Auto." Use the directional controls to the right of the display to change to 720p.
4. Press the Return button beneath the direction controls to get out of the secret menu.

Of course, if you decide you don't like the 720p upconversion, you can use the same sequence to turn it off.

So, it sounds like it does do "upscaling"? Gonna give this a try tonight.

My understanding, and I might be wrong, and I have the 705 to boot,
is that it upscales, just not to 1080, It stops at 720.
I think the 480 is default.

According to CNET, this should upscale a 480p signal to 720p when it sends it to the TV. However, CNET was not happy with how that upscaling looked and recommended to keep it off. But, I'll give it a shot and see if my TV actually says that it receives a 720p signal instead of the 480p that is currently is through HDMI when I'm playing the SD DVD or Wii.

Yeah, Onkyo's use of the term "upscaling" and "upconversion" is deceptive. My 804 was marketed as an "upscaling for HD" receiver, but it does nothing of the sort. They need a new term to describe that all it's doing is re-routing all inputs through a single HDMI.

I think the new ones (#05 series) do some upconversion in the true sense of the word, but in most cases your player will do a better job.

I did some checking on another forum and this does seem to be the case with the Wii. I'll give it a try tonight, but I'm most likely going to turn this upscaling off.

Besides, the only reason I wanted to hook up the SD DVD to the receiver and to the TV was to be able to easily show people the difference between SD DVD and BD. I was going to put on the same movie in the DVD player and the PS3 and switch back and forth to show the big difference.

Would've been nice to show an upscaled DVD picture. My RCA does do upscaling to 720p and 1080i, but only through its HDMI port. But, I'm not going to fuss with switching inputs on the TV just to show how good BD is compared to SD DVD. Besides, it's more dramatic without upscaling the DVD anyway.

Overall, I really like the receiver. I'm now down to two remotes. Use the Onkyo remote to control the receiver and cable/DVR and the PS3 remote for the BD player.

Just FYI, I tried it and while the Wii had black bars on the side when I first powered it up, my TV adjusted and expanded to fill the whole screen. And, the TV is receiving a 720p signal. The picture looks slightly better than 480p, so I think I'm going to keep it on.

the USB IR receiver works with Harmony remotes... very worthwhile. You can't turn the PS3 on/off, have direct button angle/subtitle features, but that bothers me not. i got mine on thursday. for $14, you can't beat it to have one remote to control them all

Since so many have referenced the cnet.com review of the 605, let me sk this question.

The review raves about the great value regarding features for price, but gives it poor marks for "video processing." Am I correct that 1080i and 1080p signals fed to the receiver and sent to the TV via HDMI are simply "passed through" with no "processing" done to the signals whatsoever? If so, what are they talking about?

Thanks.

They are talking about the "hidden feature" that upconverts 480 video to 720p. Not a big deal to me as i let my PS3 handle all that for me... I might try it out for SD cable... but i rarely watch that..
