Component Video Upconversion - check Analog to HDMI Upconversion - check 480i to 480p processing - check 1080p upscaling - NO check Thanks again. Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss a setting or feature. |

We didn't have much luck using the 720p upconverting (we found it messed up the aspect ratio), but here's the trick to activate the secret menu: 1. Hold down the Aux button on the front panel of the receiver. 2. While holding down Aux, press Power. 3. The LED display should read "Resolution: Auto." Use the directional controls to the right of the display to change to 720p. 4. Press the Return button beneath the direction controls to get out of the secret menu. Of course, if you decide you don't like the 720p upconversion, you can use the same sequence to turn it off. So, it sounds like it does do "upscaling"? Gonna give this a try tonight. |

According to CNET, this should upscale a 480p signal to 720p when it sends it to the TV. However, CNET was not happy with how that upscaling looked and recommended to keep it off. But, I'll give it a shot and see if my TV actually says that it receives a 720p signal instead of the 480p that is currently is through HDMI when I'm playing the SD DVD or Wii.

Besides, the only reason I wanted to hook up the SD DVD to the receiver and to the TV was to be able to easily show people the difference between SD DVD and BD. ![]() Would've been nice to show an upscaled DVD picture. My RCA does do upscaling to 720p and 1080i, but only through its HDMI port. But, I'm not going to fuss with switching inputs on the TV just to show how good BD is compared to SD DVD. Besides, it's more dramatic without upscaling the DVD anyway. ![]() Overall, I really like the receiver. I'm now down to two remotes. Use the Onkyo remote to control the receiver and cable/DVR and the PS3 remote for the BD player. |

Just FYI, I tried it and while the Wii had black bars on the side when I first powered it up, my TV adjusted and expanded to fill the whole screen. And, the TV is receiving a 720p signal. The picture looks slightly better than 480p, so I think I'm going to keep it on.

Yeah, Onkyo's use of the term "upscaling" and "upconversion" is deceptive. My 804 was marketed as an "upscaling for HD" receiver, but it does nothing of the sort. They need a new term to describe that all it's doing is re-routing all inputs through a single HDMI.
I think the new ones (#05 series) do some upconversion in the true sense of the word, but in most cases your player will do a better job. |
