Perhaps LordoftheRings really meant to say: "You can't buy a HDR Blu-Ray which isn't a 4K Blu-Ray".
Yes, I sure meant that. We see no HDR logo on our Blu-ray covers.
YouTube and Netflix are ahead in that department. You can even get Atmos.
Blu-ray is dead.

Why doesn't HDR work like it should on my Sony XBR55X930D TV? I'm getting a sub-par, dull picture when it's in HDR mode. Can anyone help? I've tried everything.

No. But it's right there in the UHD Blu-ray spec should anyone want to use it, and as mentioned some YT vids are HDR without being 4K. If you're that desperate to see it in action you could always try turning your player to 1080p but leaving HDR on, this will output a 1920x1080 HDR signal on the Sony and OPPO players.

First check under picture>advance settings>video options:

your

HDR setting,
HDMI video range and
Color space

are all set to auto.

I'm not desperate Monsieur Geoff; HDR is gaining more and more, getting better and expanding. HDMI 2.1 is @ the threshold of the next step. OLED is working great, not perfect yet but great, 4K front projectors are affordable more and more, HDR-10, Dolby Vision are making footprints, Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049 are coming up in HDR, and all is not bad @ all on the waterfront.

Our computers are also offering HDR, and soon we might get some Christmas presents.

Geoff, watch 'The Keep' from Michael Mann with the music of Tangerine Dream, on DVD or VHS tape, and upscale it with your Sony.

Woo hoo! This is FANTASTIC! It took a year. But it's done. Hooray!

EDIT:
Title search for HDR without filter: About 3,230,000 results
Title search for HDR with filter: About 781 results

Genuine HDR content is 0.02418% of the total.

To put it another way, 99.976% of "HDR" titled videos are not actually HDR.

I was right.

We've wasted a whole year trying in vain to find that 0.02418% needle in a haystack because they refused to add that filter. Better late than never, but their refusal was so unnecessary.

I tried for months, but he was steadfast in his resolve. He made a statement here: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6345005579458744321/

The irony is sadly that we've been pointing out for all this time that our Samsung 2016 TVs support HLG, yet the BBC only list 2017 models

ps the BBC list contains many duplicates. Eg there aren't 89 Philips models, there are 53, with 36 of them listed twice.

The irony is....
I see.
Although given less exposure than the high profile AV tweeters, I find fellow forum member DanBa to be more disciplined and accurate with his tables and references than the general marketeers, be it their marketing a certain product or themselves, for that matter.

On a more technical note, as far as the BBC is concerned, like with any of these companies or organizations, I think it’s always good to fairly challenge them from the get-go, for example…. http://phenix.int-evry.fr/jct/doc_en...t.php?id=10324 <- even though in that case, it could be counter argued that the blatant orange hue distortion noted with HLG in the Arris report may have been a worst case scenario.

Similar to the UHD Premium standards, VESA has announced HDR standards for PC, gaming, and other displays called DisplayHDR with three tiers: 400, 600, and 1000.

When they say "10-bit image processing", does it just mean firmware/software, or are 10-bit hardware panels required somewhere in this?

Overall, this seems extremely promising for product transparency and clarity.

It looks like they will accept 8 bit with 2 bit dithering from the Performance Criteria: https://displayhdr.org/performance-criteria/

Quote:
PC displays today commonly utilize 6-bit drivers and attempt to simulate 8-bit quality through a dithering algorithm. True 8-bit performance is required in all DisplayHDR tiers, and for the DisplayHDR 600 and 1000 tiers 10-bit performance by using 8-bit drivers with 2-bit dithering at a minimum.
